Liner-to-socket distance measurement using inductive sensing may be an effective means to continuously monitor socket fit in people using trans-tibial prostheses. A practical limitation, however, is a means to incorporate a thin uniform-thickness layer of conductive or magnetically permeable target material into the wide range of prosthetic liner products that people with limb amputation commonly use. In this paper, a method is presented whereby a 0.50-mm thickness ferrous polymer made from a SEEPS polymer and iron powder that is formed adjacent to a 0.25-mm thick non-ferrous layer of SEEPS po

OBJECTIVE: Radial head arthroplasty (RHA) is the principal treatment option for comminuted radial head (RH) fractures. Here, we present six cases of failed RHA using a modular monopolar press-fit RHA that was subsequently withdrawn from the market because it was associated with a high incidence of loosening.
METHODS: We retrospectively collected data from six patients who had received Radial Head Prothesis SystemTM at our centre between July 2015 and June 2016. The average follow-up was 40 months.
RESULTS: Aseptic loosening of the stem affected five (83%) of the six RHA. Four of these were s

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results following total first metatarsophalangeal (FMTP) joint replacement arthroplasty using a modular three component press fit prosthesis at two year follow up.
METHODS: All patient data was collected in a prospective way in four study centres. Both preoperative and postoperative evaluation consisted of an assessment using the AOFAS-HMI score, visual analogue scale for pain, evaluation of the range of motion and patient satisfaction scores. Postoperative X-rays were reviewed for loosening and radiolucency up to two years.
RESULTS: Fift

BACKGROUND: After amputation, many people become less active, feel lonely and lose independence. Understanding the factors associated with low physical activity levels and participation could contribute to defining key interventions which can support prosthesis users so they can live a more active and socially included lifestyle. This longitudinal observational study aims to assess relationships between physical activity, community participation, prosthetic fit, comfort and user satisfaction using actimetry, 3D scans and questionnaires in a Cambodian cohort of established lower limb prosthesis

BACKGROUND: This case report describes the revision of a trans-tibial amputation complicated by a proximal malunited fracture. It demonstrates the complexity of decisions involved in revisions of this nature.
CASE DESCRIPTION AND METHODS: The patient presented has a painful stump due to breakdown of soft tissues. She had been suffering for over a year with pressure sores and inability to use a prosthesis resulting from this, decreasing her quality of life. Malunion of a tibial fracture proximal to the amputation complicated her condition.
FINDINGS AND OUTCOMES: Initially it was feared that t

PURPOSE: Various radial head prosthesis designs are currently in use. Few studies compare different prosthetic designs. We hypothesized that increasing a cementless implant stem's length would reduce stem-bone micromotion, with both short and long neck cuts. We also hypothesized that a minimum stem length might be required for the initial fixation strength of a press-fit implant.
METHODS: In 16 fresh-frozen cadaveric elbows (8 pairs), the radial head and neck were cut either 10 or 21 mm below the top of the head. Modular cementless stems were inserted and sequentially lengthened in 5-mm incre

Between 1985 and 1990, 108 consecutive Harris-Galante I (Zimmer, Warsaw, IN) total hip arthroplasties were performed by four surgeons at a single hospital. At the time of follow-up evaluation, 80 hips were available for review. The mean rate of linear wear was 0.15 mm/y, mean rate of three-dimensional femoral head displacement was 0.21 mm/y, and mean rate of volumetric wear was 121 mm3/y. Eight hips (10%) in this series had radiologic osteolysis around either the femoral or acetabular component. A significantly greater volumetric wear rate was found in patients who were younger, those with a h

The prosthetic fit of a thimble-type esthetic silicone prosthesis was retrospectively reviewed in 29 patients who were fitted following distal finger amputations. The aim was to correlate prosthetic fit with the magnitudes of circumference reduction in the finger models used to produce the prostheses and to identify the optimum reduction for the best outcome. A good fit is achieved primarily by making the prosthesis circumferentially smaller than the segment of the residual finger (residuum) over which it "cups". The percentage reduction in circumference of the finger model against the residuu

BACKGROUND: Radial head arthroplasty is the preferred surgical strategy for unreconstructable radial head fractures associated with complex elbow injuries. Single-diameter monoblock prostheses remain widely used and are sometimes implanted off-label as press-fit, even when the manufacturer's instructions specify cementation. Outcome data on this practice are scarce. We aimed to describe the clinical, functional, and radiographic outcomes of a single-diameter monoblock partial radial head prosthesis implanted off-label as a press-fit for complex elbow trauma.
METHODS: We retrospectively review

Background: Radial head arthroplasty is commonly used for unreconstructable radial head fractures, particularly in cases associated with elbow instability. Both loose-fit monobloc and cemented bipolar radial head prostheses are available, but comparative evidence regarding their clinical and radiographic outcomes remains limited. This study aimed to compare mid-term outcomes between these two implant designs. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted on 26 patients who underwent radial head arthroplasty for acute radial head fractures between November 2020 and October 2023. Fo

BACKGROUND: The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of build orientation on the marginal and internal fit of 3D-printed provisional fixed dental prostheses. METHODS: Electronic searches of four databases were conducted to identify studies assessing how build orientation affects the fit of 3D-printed provisional FDPs. This review was structured and drafted based on the guidelines provided by the PRISMA. Prior to commencement, the research protocol was officially registered with PROSPERO. This review sought to answer the following PICO question: Do provisiona

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Although polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and zirconia (Zir) have been used as implant-supported prosthesis (ISP) frameworks, the long-term effects of thermomechanical aging on the marginal fit and fracture resistance of PEEK and Zir ISP frameworks with titanium (Ti) bases for patients with a partially edentulous arch are not clear.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the marginal fit and fracture resistance of PEEK and Zir ISP frameworks with Ti bases and Ti ISP frameworks for partially edentulous arches after aging.

BACKGROUND: Patients with lower extremity amputation frequently suffer from socket-related problems. This seriously limits prosthesis use, level of activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). An additional problem in patients with lower extremity amputation are asymmetries in gait kinematics possibly accounting for back pain. Bone-anchored prostheses (BAPs) are a possible solution for socket-related problems. Knowledge concerning the level of function, activity and HRQoL after surgery is limited. The aims of this ongoing study are to: a) describe changes in the level of function, acti
