Neurotrophic factors as a protective strategy in Parkinson's disease.

Neurodegenerative disorders are devastating human diseases that include Parkinson's, Huntington's, Alzheimer's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and the frontal temporal dementias. Although the clinical manifestations of these disorders have been known for quite some time, our understanding of the molecular underpinnings is only starting to emerge. Protein misfolding and aggregation is a common hallmark among these diseases, and produce a number of cellular and functional alterations. The loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra justified the use of dopaminergic therapies in patients

Risk and Protective Factors in Dancers Exposed to Trauma.

PURPOSE: This study examined risk and protective factors in dancers with/without posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and with/without trauma exposure. LITERATURE REVIEW: Exposure to traumatic events and developing PTSD can compromise daily functioning and performance ability. Despite exposure many dancers adapt, whereas others suffer psychopathology such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and difficulties regulating emotions. METHODS: Two hundred ninety two pre-professional/professional dancers provided informed consent (IRB approved) and completed 8 self-report measures. A subsample (66%) expos

Nurses during war: Profiles-based risk and protective factors.

INTRODUCTION: Nurses in southern Israel's public hospitals were exposed to unusual traumatic events following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, and the ensuing Swords of Iron War. This study aimed to clarify the complexity of wartime nursing by identifying profiles based on risk factors (i.e., psychological distress and adjustment disorders) and protective factors (i.e., positive affect (PA), resilience, and perceived social support [PSS]). DESIGN: This study utilizes a cross-sectional design. METHOD: Two hundred nurses at a major public hospital in southern Israel completed self-

Appraising causal risk and protective factors for rheumatoid arthritis.

AIMS: Mendelian randomization (MR) is considered to overcome the bias of observational studies, but there is no current meta-analysis of MR studies on rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The purpose of this study was to summarize the relationship between potential pathogenic factors and RA risk based on existing MR studies. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were searched for MR studies on influencing factors in relation to RA up to October 2022. Meta-analyses of MR studies assessing correlations between various potential pathogenic factors and RA were conducted. Random-effect and fixed-effec

The psychology of cryptocurrency trading: Risk and protective factors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Crypto-currency trading is a rapidly growing form of behaviour characterised by investing in highly volatile digital assets based largely on blockchain technology. In this paper, we review the particular structural characteristics of this activity and its potential to give rise to excessive or harmful behaviour including over-spending and compulsive checking. We note that there are some similarities between online sports betting and day trading, but also several important differences. These include the continuous 24-hour availability of trading, the global nature of the ma

Positive activities as protective factors against mental health conditions.

Applying Nolen-Hoeksema and Watkins's (2011) transdiagnostic risk factor heuristic to our work on positive activities (i.e., practices that characterize naturally happy people, like expressing gratitude and practicing generosity), we propose that such activities may serve as protective factors that mitigate proximal risk factors both directly and by intervening with the mechanisms that give rise to them. First, we discuss theoretical and empirical support for the importance of well-being and the mechanisms that explain how positive activities promote well-being (by boosting positive emotions,

Risk and protective factors in maternal-fetal attachment development.

Prenatal attachment can be described as the parents' emotions, perceptions and behaviors that are related to the fetus. This relationship has been described as the most basic form of the human intimacy and represents the earlier internalized representation of the fetus that both parents typically acquire and elaborate during pregnancy. The quality of the relationship between an infant and his or her parent is an important factor influencing the child's later development, both cognitive and emotional. There is evidence - even though yet unclear - that demographic, perinatal and psychological va

Protective Pychosocial Factors in Depression Among Spousally Bereaved Elders.

Three psychosocial factors were examined for their ability to reduce depressive symptomatology among a sample of 79 spousally bereaved elders. Baseline assessments of social supports, stability of social rhythms, and mastery events were used in linear and logistic regression analyses to examine their association with: 1) baseline depressive symptomatology, and 2) the likelihood of being or becoming syndromally depressed, or 3) dysthymic from approximately 2 until 13 months after the loss of a spouse. Results indicated that mastery events, global social support, and "appraised" or "belonging" s

Predicting reading disability: early cognitive risk and protective factors.

This longitudinal study examined early cognitive risk and protective factors for Grade 2 reading disability (RD). We first examined the reading outcome of 198 children in four developmental cognitive subgroups that were identified in our previous analysis: dysfluent trajectory, declining trajectory, unexpected trajectory and typical trajectory. We found that RD was unevenly distributed among the subgroups, although children with RD were found in all subgroups. A majority of the children with RD had familial risk for dyslexia. Second, we examined in what respect children with similar early cogn

Factors that deregulate the protective immune response in tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease which essentially affects the lungs and produces profound abnormalities on the immune system. Although most people infected by the tubercle bacillus (90%) do not develop the disease during their lifetime, when there are alterations in the immune system, such as co-infection with HIV, malnutrition, or diabetes, the risk of developing active disease increases considerably. Interestingly, during the course of active disease, even in the absence of immunosuppressive conditions, there is a profound and prolonged suppression of Mycobacterium tubercul

HIV/AIDS protective factors among urban American Indian youths.

This research examined how family and individual factors influence 3 HIV/AIDS risk behaviors: having more than 1 sexual partner in the last 3 months, substance use at last sexual intercourse, and condom non-use at last sexual intercourse. The sample includes 89 sexually active American Indian adolescents living in a large Southwestern U.S. city. Logistic regression results revealed that family communication acts as a protective factor against HIV risk through a lower reported substance use during last sexual intercourse, but it did not appear to affect the number of multiple recent sex partner

Pathogenicity of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae: virulence factors and protective immunity.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is the causative agent of erysipelas in animals and erysipeloid in humans. In the absence of specific antibodies, the organism evades phagocytosis by phagocytic cells, but even if phagocytized, it is able to replicate intracellulary in these cells. In this review, recent advances in our understanding of the pathogenicity of E. rhusiopathiae and its protective immunity are described.

Is Rumination a Risk and a Protective Factor?

High trait positive affect (PA) protects against depressive symptoms through cognitive responses such as rumination. However, how rumination in response to positive emotions (positive rumination) protects against depressive symptoms while rumination in response to negative emotions (brooding) predicts depressive symptoms is poorly understood. We hypothesized that (a) positive rumination and brooding represent a shared cognitive process of affect amplification on distinct affective content and (b) less brooding and greater positive rumination would distinctly mediate greater trait PA in predict

[Risk factors and protective factors in a population a risk for newborn necrotizing enterocolitis].

NEC represents the most common gastrointestinal disorder in newborn. Its range varies from 1% to 7.7% and is frequently associated with factors such as intestinal ischaemia, prematurity, gastrointestinal infection and early and rapid enteral feeding. Between 15/1/1990 and 15/6/1995, 129 critically ill newborns were admitted in NICU of Policlinico S. Orsola-Bologna. We examined only 93 patients, hospitalized for over 48 hours, presenting one or more risk factors for the development of NEC, such as birthweight < 2000 gm, respiratory distress, gastrointestinal bacterial colonization, sepsis, PDA

A novel method for evaluating sun visible light protection factor and pigmentation protection factor of sunscreens.

INTRODUCTION: The role of visible light (VL) in the process of skin pigmentation by solar radiation has been demonstrated. Sunscreens with the presence of pigments, particularly iron oxide (IO), have a greater protective effect against VL and are, therefore, highly recommended for prevention and treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders. This study aimed to evaluate 33 sunscreen formulations, and through spectrophotometric measurements, proposes new methods to evaluate the VL protection factor and the pigmentation protection factor. METHODS: 33 sunscreen formulations marketed in Brazil were ev

Understanding Youth Suicide Risk Through Changes in Protective Strength Factors.

Adolescent suicide remains a critical public health concern, with rates continuing to rise globally. This study examined the role of strength development in mitigating suicide risk among youth receiving behavioral health services. Utilizing administrative data from a Midwestern state's behavioral health authority, the study analyzed 391 adolescents aged 13-19 years (M = 16.34, SD = 1.51), including 244 girls (62.4%) and 147 boys (37.6%), who presented with recent suicidal ideation or behavior. Strength indicators included family strengths, interpersonal skills, optimism, educational support, v

Protective Environmental Factors and Opioid Use Among Sexual Minority Youth.

Objectives: Nonmedical use of prescription opioids (NMUPO) is a pressing public health concern and affects sexual minority youth (SMY) at greater rates than heterosexual youth. We investigated whether protective environmental factors-(1) Human Rights Campaign's state equality index (SEI) and (2) supportive school environments for LGBTQ youth, influenced NMUPO among SMY and non-SMY students. Methods: We combined data from the 2017-2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2016-2018 School Health Profiles, state-level socio-demographic and SEI data across 24 states (N=156,149). Assessing protective factors for sexually violent offending with the SAPROF.

The Structured Assessment of Protective Factors for violence risk (SAPROF) has recently been developed as a risk assessment tool to focus solely on protective factors for (sexual) violence risk. Research on protective factors for sexual offending is very limited and most risk assessment tools for adult sexual offenders do not incorporate protective factors. The current study investigates the applicability and predictive validity of the SAPROF for forensic psychiatric patients who have sexually offended. For a sample of 83 hands-on sexual offenders, risk assessments were carried out retrospecti
