The Prune-Belly (Eagle-Barrett) syndrome (PBS) is a congenital and genetically heterogeneous disease, more prevalent in males, defined by the clinical triad (1) deficiency of abdominal muscles, (2) bilateral cryptorchidism, and (3) urinary tract abnormalities. The abdomen of an infant with PBS has a typical appearance, similar to the aspect of a prune, which gives it its name. Although the etiology of this disorder is still unknown, numerous theories, mutations, and genetic disturbances have been proposed to explain the origin of PBS. Prognosis can differ a lot from one patient to another, sin

INTRODUCTION: Many patients with Prune Belly Syndrome (PBS) require abdominoplasty alone or in combination with correction of any urogenital abnormalities. This video presents a simplified technique with which to treat the abdominal flaccidity in PBS.
METHODS: A longitudinal xypho-pubic fusiform figure is drawn on the abdomen, based on the area of skin and subcutaneous tissue to be removed. This is performed with preservation of the musculo-fascial layer and the umbilicus. A lateral elliptical single xypho-pubic line is drawn in the most lax side of the fascia, which is incised along this lin…

PURPOSE: To analyze the epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic and evolutionary aspects of cryptorchidism in Prune Belly syndrome.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: This is a retrospective and descriptive study over an 11-year period involving 24 cases of children admitted for cryptorchidism that is part of Prune Belly syndrome in the paediatric surgery department of the Aristide Le Dantec University Hospital in Dakar. We were interested in epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic and evolutionary aspects.
RESULTS: The incidence of cryptorchidism in Prune Belly syndrome was 2.4 cases per year. The aver…

Dravet syndrome is a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy associated with pathogenic variants in SCN1A. Most disease-causing variants are located within coding regions, but recent work has shed light on the role of noncoding variants associated with a poison exon in intron 20 of SCN1A. Discovery of the SCN1A poison exon known as 20N has led to the first potential disease-modifying therapy for Dravet syndrome in the form of an antisense oligonucleotide. Here, we demonstrate the existence of 2 additional poison exons in introns 1 and 22 of SCN1A through targeted, deep-coverage long-read se

We present the ultrasonographic diagnosis at the 19th gestational week in a case of Prune-belly syndrome which consists in abdominal wall distension with deficiency of the abdominal wall musculature, urinary tract abnormalities (specially mega bladder), and in males, cryptorchidism. The pathologic examination found the patient devoid of striated muscles anterior abdominal wall, hypertrophy of the urinary bladder, and urethral atresia. The Prune-belly is accessible to antenatal diagnosis and the variable prognosis does not always justify abortion.

The Prune Belly syndrome (PBS) is unfrequent. Fourteen cases have been followed in our unit during the last 20 years. Four infants (29%) died during the first months of life, because of neonatal sepsis (2 cases) or end-stage renal failure (2 cases). Among the other 10 cases, 6 (43%) had normal glomerular filtration rate at a mean age of 10 years 6 months (6 months to 15 years), 4 had chronic renal failure, including 3 cases who developed end-stage renal failure at 8, 8 years 8 months and 17 years respectively. Resection of an urethral obstruction was performed in 2 cases. This surgical indicat…

Presenting a case of our own, the different forms and their severity of the prune-belly-syndrome are discussed. Considerations about the pathogenesis let us accept a common superordinate disturbance in the differentiation of myotoma and urinary system.

The prune belly syndrome is described in a 2 month old male infant who presented with abdominal distension since birth to Paediatrics Department, Gonder College of Medical Science Hospital, in November 1991. The clinical and radiological presentations and theories concerning the genesis of the syndrome are briefly discussed with a review of the literature.

Prune-Belly Syndrome (PBS) is a rare congenital syndrome characterized by the absence of abdominal muscles, anomalies in the urinary tract, megaureter, cryptorchidism or testicular agenesis, hypertension and worsening chronic kidney disease (CKD). The incidence is estimated between 1 out of 35,000 and 1 out of 50,000 born alive, and it affects males in prevalence (97%). In the present study we describe the case of a 38 year old male patient (followed since May 2011) affected by PBS, CKD, one functional kidney at the scintigraphy, pediatric testicular implants, bladder surgery and correction of

We report a term, small for gestational age neonate having full spectrum of VACTERL association. In addition, the neonate also had triad of signs and symptoms associated with prune belly syndrome. The concurrence of these two syndromes could lie in their common etiology of defect in mesodermal differentiation. Such a combination is extremely rare and is generally incompatible with life.

We assess the effect of the prune-belly syndrome (PBS) on renal transplantation outcome. Six renal transplantations were performed in five boys affected by PBS (median age 5.8+/-2.1 years, median weight 13.6+/-2.4kg). Renal graft survival, graft function, lower urinary tract dysfunction, urinary tract infections (UTIs), associated complications and patients' survival after 1 and 5 years of follow-up were analysed. The rate for 1-5-year graft survival was 66.7% (mean serum creatinine 98-103 micromol/l). The surgical treatment of the documented bladder obstruction (two patients) and the severe a

The prune belly syndrome was first described in 1839 by Frolich. Till now about 300 cases have been reported in literature. The complete form of the syndrome is presented by a classic triad that is seen only in boys and is incompatible with life. The etiology of the syndrome is uncertain. Genetic factors, intrauterine infections, adverse mechanical factors have been implicated. The prenatal diagnosis relies on the ultrasonographic findings of oligohydramnion, renal anomalies, and non-immune fetal hydropsy. The present case concerns a newborn of male sex suffering from the most severe and rare …

A 14-day-old male infant with megalourethra is presented because of the rarity of the anomaly and its association with prune-belly syndrome. The lax, wrinkled appearance of the abdomen, bilateral cryptorchidism and severe dilatation of the urinary system are features included in the classic triad of the prune-belly syndrome. Our patient had the scaphoid variety of megalourethra since the penis appeared elongated and floppy in the fusiform form.

Prune belly syndrome is a relatively uncommon disorder that is characterized by intrauterine urinary obstruction associated with cryptorchisdism, oligohydramnios, and orthopaedic deformations. The oligohydramnios is believed to produce limited intrauterine space, which in turn leads to fetal compression and the resultant deformities. The deformities observed in our patients were developmental dislocation of the hip (DDH), clubfeet, metatarsus adductus, vertical talus, and congenital muscular torticollis. These deformations should be treated aggressively because children with prune belly syndro…
