Evaluation and modelling of osmotic pre-treatment of peach using alternative agents in a multiple-component solution.

BACKGROUND: Peach is a perishable fruit of great importance for the Greek food export market which is prone to rapid deterioration after harvesting. Its short shelf life can be substantially prolonged by applying an appropriate osmotic dehydration (OD) pre-treatment, which is a mild, non-thermal procedure. The aim of this study was to describe mass transfer and quality retention induced by the OD process. RESULTS: Peach pieces were immersed in tertiary solutions of glycerol, erythritol, steviol glucosides and mineral salts at pre-selected OD conditions (25-45 °C for 3-240 min, wfruit /wsoluti

Regulation of growth in peach roots by exogenous hydrogen sulfide based on RNA-Seq.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been shown to regulate many physiological processes of plants. In this study, we observed that 0.2 mM sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), a donor of H2S, can regulate the root architecture of peach seedlings, increasing the number of lateral roots by 40.63%. To investigate the specific mechanisms by which H2S regulates root growth in peach, we used RNA sequencing and heterologous expression technology. Our results showed that exogenous H2S led to a 44.50% increase in the concentration of endogenous auxin. Analyses of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) revealed that 963 an

Temporal, spatial, and vertical distribution of plum curculio (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in southeastern peach orchards.

Plum curculio (PC), Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a key pest of Southeastern US peaches. To facilitate the development of spatiotemporally targeted management approaches and improve the deployment and design of monitoring traps, we studied PC's vertical distribution within peach orchards and whether their dispersal patterns resulted in an orchard edge effect. Non-baited Whalon-modified Tedder's traps (black pyramid traps; ∼120 cm in height) deployed at 3 heights-0 (low), 120 (medium), and 240 (high) cm above the ground-revealed that PC were captured at all hei

Analysis of the Causes of Split Pit in Peaches.

Split pit is a key factor affecting the quality and yield of peaches; it refers to the failure of the endocarp to close along the suture line. There are significant cultivar-specific differences in peaches regarding their susceptibility or resistance to split pit. During fruit ripening, the stable lignification of the endocarp is crucial to prevent split pit. Excessively rapid and unstable fruit development caused by extreme environments seriously affects endocarp formation, leading to split-pit traits. The uneven distribution of phytohormones is one of the important reasons for uneven fruit g

Physiological and biochemical parameters controlling waterlogging stress tolerance in Prunus before and after drainage.

Waterlogging is associated with poor soil drainage. As a consequence oxygen levels decrease in the root environment inducing root asphyxia and affecting plant growth. Some plants can survive under these conditions triggering complex anatomical and biochemical adaptations, mostly in the roots. Long- and short-term responses to waterlogging stress were compared in two trials using a set of two myrobalans (Prunus cerasifera Erhr), 'P.2175' and 'P.2980', as tolerant rootstocks and two almond × peach [Prunus amygdalus Batsch ×Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] interspecific hybrids, 'Garnem' and 'Felinem'

Hydrogen sulfide alleviates chilling injury in peach fruit by maintaining cell structure integrity via regulating endogenous H2S, antioxidant and cell wall metabolisms.

Effects of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on chilling injury (CI), H2S, antioxidant and cell-wall metabolisms of refrigerated peaches treated with H2S and hypotaurine (HT, H2S scavenger) were investigated in present study. Results revealed that H2S treatment enhanced endogenous H2S content, which was associated with increased related H2S synthase enzymes activities, while HT showed the opposite results. Moreover, H2S treatment induced the accumulation of ascorbic acid, glutathione and the enhancement of antioxidant enzymes activities compared to control and HT, contributing to lower hydrogen peroxide

Activation of the BABA-induced priming defence through redox homeostasis and the modules of TGA1 and MAPKK5 in postharvest peach fruit.

The priming of defence responses in pathogen-challenged model plants undergoes a preparation phase and an expression phase for defence function. However, the priming response in postharvest fruits has not been elucidated. Here, we found that 50 mM β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) treatment could induce two distinct pathways linked with TGA1-related systemic acquired resistance (SAR), resulting in the alleviation of Rhizopus rot in postharvest peach fruit. The first priming phase was elicited by BABA alone, leading to the enhanced transcription of redox-regulated genes and posttranslational modificat

Comparison of the effects of dynamic high-pressure microfluidization and conventional homogenization on the quality of peach juice.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic high-pressure microfluidization (DHPM) is an emerging and promising technique for continuous production of fluid foods. This study aimed to investigate the influence of DHPM and conventional homogenization (CH) on the quality of peach juice. Processing was performed by passing peach juice through CH at 20 MPa and DHPM at 20-160 MPa for one or three passes. The effect of DHPM pressure and passing number were also assessed. RESULTS: The results indicate that DHPM could maintain the antioxidant activity of peach juice much better than CH processing. Total phenolic compounds w

Chokeberry Pomace as a Source of Polyphenols for Complexation with Plant-Based Proteins.

One way to utilize by-products from fruit production is the extraction of bioactive compounds and their subsequent complexation with appropriate carriers. Consequently, we used chokeberry pomace extract for complexation with plant-based proteins, namely almond, rice, pea, and pumpkin-seed protein matrices, which differ in their composition and protein content. The obtained complexes, as well as the chokeberry pomace extract and protein matrices, were evaluated for the concentration of individual polyphenols, total polyphenols, procyanidins, and antioxidant activity. Traditional remedies used for the treatment of cattle wounds and myiasis in Amatola Basin, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

A questionnaire survey was carried out to document traditional remedies used in the treatment of cattle wounds and myiasis in Amatola Basin. Eighty-three cattle farmers from nine villages were interviewed. The majority of respondents (67.9%) use traditional remedies for treatment of these conditions. However, 25.9% of them use a combination of traditional remedies with conventional medicines. The survey revealed that 13 medicinal plants belonging to 11 families were used. Aloe ferox, Prunus persica and Phytolacca heptandra were, however, the most commonly used. Leaves are the most frequently u

Climate change mitigation potential of fruit orchards in the mid-hills of the Indian Himalayas.

While fruit orchards contribute to carbon sequestration, limited data exist on their overall role in climate change mitigation, particularly in terms of carbon footprint. The present study (2023-2024) was conducted in the mid-hill temperate agroclimatic zone of Himachal Pradesh to assess the climate change mitigation potential of high-density apple and conventional peach, plum, and apricot orchards. For biomass estimation, a semi-destructive method was employed, while for carbon footprint pretested questionnaire was used to collect information regarding agricultural inputs. The carbon stock of

Hydrogen sulfide-induced chilling resistance in peach fruit is performed via sustaining the homeostasis of ROS and RNS.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) application impacts on endogenous H2S, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in cold-stored peach fruit were investigated. 20 μL L-1 H2S (NaHS as the donor) efficiently retarded the quality deterioration arising from chilling injury (CI), triggering endogenous H2S production, while enhancing antioxidant systems and ROS generation (NADPH oxidative enzyme). H2S promoted nitric oxide (NO) correlated with the S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR)-mediated GSNO reduction, while suppressing the peroxynitrite anion content. As the pivotal coenzyme

Postmortem diagnostics of assumed suicidal food anaphylaxis in prison: a unique case of anaphylactic death due to peach ingestion.

Suicidal ingestion of food which the victim is aware they are allergic to is an exceptional occurrence in the forensic field. To the best of our knowledge, no cases of suicidal food anaphylaxis have been reported to date. Therefore we present the first case described in the literature. A 30-year-old prisoner was found dead inside his cell with the remains of a peach remains next to his body, and a handwritten farewell note in his pocket. The autopsy revealed only non-specific findings, while laboratory investigations (serological, toxicological, histological, and immunohistochemical) played a

A single nucleotide mutation in GID1c disrupts its interaction with DELLA1 and causes a GA-insensitive dwarf phenotype in peach.

Plant stature is one important factor that affects the productivity of peach orchards. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism(s) underlying the dwarf phenotype of peach tree. Here, we report a dwarfing mechanism in the peach cv. FenHuaShouXingTao (FHSXT). The dwarf phenotype of 'FHSXT' was caused by shorter cell length compared to the standard cv. QiuMiHong (QMH). 'FHSXT' contained higher endogenous GA levels than did 'QMH' and did not response to exogenous GA treatment (internode elongation). These results indicated that 'FHSXT' is a GA-insensitive dwarf mutant. A dwarf phenot

Secondary metabolites of the invasive tree, Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana), provide support for the empty niche theory of invasion.

Invasive woody species like Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana Decne.) alter ecosystems directly and indirectly through effects on arthropod communities as well as chemical alterations of the soil. Evidence suggests that the aggressive spread and negative impacts are due to allelopathic chemicals present throughout plant tissues which reduce herbivory and add unique allochthonous inputs to the soil, thereby reducing germination of native species and furthering Callery pear's domination on the landscape. To assess the allelopathic potential of Callery pear, we collected leaf tissue from Callery pea
