Multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma mimicking recurrent pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma (MCPM) is a borderline variant of peritoneal mesothelioma with indolent behaviour but a significant recurrence rate without radical treatment. Due to its rarity, risk factors and optimal treatment are still to clarify. The present clinical case is a report of MCPM developed after laparoscopic cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (Lap CRS-HIPEC) for pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) of appendiceal origin. The patient was treated for PMP with Lap CRS-HIPEC. One year later a recurrence was suspected at the thorax-abdomen computed tomog

Pseudomyxoma peritonei: cytomorphologic findings and clinicopathologic correlates.

INTRODUCTION: To analyze the cytomorphology and clinical correlates of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PP), a frequently fatal pathological entity defined by gelatinous ascites caused by slow but relentless accumulation of mucin produced by neoplastic glandular epithelium. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective search of the electronic pathology data systems of three large tertiary care medical institutions revealed 41 cases from 32 patients with PP and corresponding abdominal fluid cytologic specimens. Cytologic material was available for review in 15 cases. RESULTS: The primary tumor site was appe

Pseudomyxoma peritonei diagnosed 19 years after appendicectomy.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is an uncommon clinical finding describing the intraperitoneal accumulation of abundant mucinous, jelly-like material. This entity may represent a spectrum of diseases ranging from mucinous ascites, commonly associated with ruptured epithelial tumours of the appendix, to frank mucinous carcinomatosis. In cases of appendiceal origin, the patient may present with signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis, and thus careful diagnosis must be made in order to correctly and appropriately guide management. This may include a combination of surgical debulking with or withou

Research progress on postoperative delirium in pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP) is a rare malignant tumor, with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) serving as the primary treatment. Postoperative delirium (POD) is an important complication for PMP patients and is associated with poor prognosis. However, there are currently few reports on POD in PMP, both domestically and internationally, warranting further research. This article reviews the definition, pathogenesis, assessment methods, risk factors, and preventive and therapeutic measures for POD, with a focus on the unique characteristics of PMP. Early recognition and optimized management of POD in P

A Rare Case of Pericardial Involvement in Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is an uncommon clinical entity characterised by the progressive accumulation of mucinous ascites within the peritoneal cavity. We describe the case of a 59-year-old man with recurrent PMP secondary to an appendiceal mucinous neoplasm, who presented with acute chest pain and dyspnoea. Investigations revealed transient constrictive pericarditis with mild pericardial effusion and associated precardiac lymphadenopathy. Management with anti-inflammatory therapy led to clinical and echocardiographic resolution of pericardial inflammation. This case highlights an associat

Incidental Diagnosis of Pseudomyxoma Peritonei: A Case Report.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare clinical condition characterized by disseminating gelatinous ascites within the peritoneal cavity with mucinous implants on peritoneal surfaces. We present the case of a patient incidentally diagnosed after laparoscopy: definitive diagnosis after the histological examination was PMP. A 37-year-old female patient with a medical history of infertility and mild pelvic pain was found to have several collections in the pelvis and an amount of free fluid into the Douglas pouch at ultrasound examination. The patient underwent laparoscopic surgical exploration. P

The Role of Microorganisms in Appendiceal Pseudomyxoma Peritonei: A Review.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare clinical syndrome. It originates from neoplasms of the appendix and leads to the formation of peritoneal implants and the accumulation of mucinous ascites. PMP represents a spectrum of low to high-grade disease. Despite aggressive management, many PMP patients recur, leading to debilitating symptoms and few treatment options. Therefore, scientists have continued to look for ways to improve treatment and further understand disease pathogenesis. Microorganisms were previously hypothesized to play a role in PMP progression and development. Hence, antibacteri

Management of an inguinal hernia in patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a disease that results from a perforated mucinous neoplasm of the appendix so that mucinous ascites and mucin-producing tumor cells are widely disseminated in a characteristic pattern throughout the abdomen and pelvis. The intraabdominal mucus can accumulate in the inguinal canal and by physical examination be indistinguishable from the usual inguinal hernia. METHODS: A database of patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei was used to identify patients who had an inguinal hernia prior to or at the time of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and perioperative hyperther

Significance of epithelial cell clusters in pseudomyxoma peritonei.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare clinical syndrome characterised by distension of the peritoneum by jelly-like ascites. Cytological evaluation of peritoneal fluid is often an initial diagnostic test for possible ovarian and/or appendiceal primary tumours. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The present work was conducted to study the usefulness of peritoneal fluid cytomorphology in the early diagnosis of PMP and to evaluate the significance of the presence of epithelial cell (EC) clusters and their prognostic implications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the detailed cytological featu

Pathology of Mucinous Appendiceal Tumors and Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

ABSTRACT: The COVID-19 crisis presents manifest threats for entrepreneurs since their business survival is often directly at stake given the alarming economic downturn. This existential threat, together with their crucial role in the economy, is the reason for the plethora of public financial support schemes being implemented throughout the entire world. However, support schemes for mental health are lacking. We aim to investigate, first, whether burnout levels have increased during the crisis and, second, whether burnout levels during the COVID-19 crisis depend on the threat of becoming ill,

Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis with pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis is an extremely rare tumor with very few case reports in literature. Pseudomyxoma peritonei is an uncommon condition characterized by the presence of mucinous gelatinous material in the peritoneal cavity. It occurs secondary to primary mucinous neoplasms of particularly the appendix and the ovary. We present a case of a 35-year-old female who had a history of dull aching pain in the right flank since one and a half years. Upon ultrasonography (USG) and computerized tomography (CT) scan, there was a large cystic mass measuring 15x15x12 cm, extending i

[Pseudomyxoma peritonei associated with mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix].

The authors report a case of a male 86 years old patient with peritoneal pseudomyxoma associated to cystoadenoma of the appendix. Preoperative CT scan showed the presence of a mass in the appendiceal site containing a gelatinous fluid collection and calcifications. Notwithstanding, diagnosis of pseudomyxoma was preoperatively considered less probable due to the rarity of the affection and the advanced age. At laparatomy was revealed the presence of the large mass observed at CT scan, involving the caecum and occupying the retroperitoneal space along the ascending colon. Mucinous ascites was pr

Congenital pleuroperitoneal communication in a patient with pseudomyxoma peritonei.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pseudomyxoma peritonei syndrome is a rare disease arising from a perforated appendiceal adenoma. The syndrome is characterized by progressive accumulation of mucinous ascites and tumor within the peritoneal cavity. Direct extension of pseudomyxoma peritonei to the pleural cavity is uncommon and has been associated with surgical penetration of the diaphragm at the time of cytoreduction. METHODS: We review the case of a patient who presented with mucoid peritoneal and pleural fluid consistent with spontaneous pleural spread of pseudomyxoma peritonei. RESULTS: Surgica

Glycomic Profiling Highlights Increased Fucosylation in Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a subtype of mucinous adenocarcinoma that most often originates from the appendix, and grows in the peritoneal cavity filling it with mucinous ascites. KRAS and GNAS mutations are frequently found in PMP, but other common driver mutations are infrequent. As altered glycosylation can promote carcinogenesis, we compared N-linked glycan profiles of PMP tissues to those of normal appendix. Glycan profiles of eight normal appendix samples and eight low-grade and eight high-grade PMP specimens were analyzed by mass spectrometry. Our results show differences in glycan

Management of appendiceal pseudomyxoma peritonei diagnosed during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of cancer during pregnancy is approximately 1 in 1000. The most common types encountered during pregnancy are cervical, breast and ovarian. Epithelial tumors of the appendix on the other hand are rare and account for only approximately 1% of all colorectal neoplasms; the occurrence of this neoplasm during pregnancy is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: The medical history of a 30 year old woman diagnosed at 17 weeks gestation with an appendiceal mucinous tumor with large volume pseudomyxoma peritonei was presented. Her pregnancy was preserved and she had an early vag

Research progress in the diagnosis and treatment of pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP) is a rare and complex clinical syndrome characterized by the extensive implantation and metastasis of tumor cells from different tissues within the abdominal cavity, accompanied by the continuous secretion of large amounts of jelly-like mucin. PMP primarily originates from appendiceal mucinous tumors, and in rare cases, can also arise from organs or tissues such as the ovary, colon, gallbladder, pancreas, urachus, small intestine, stomach, intestinal duplications, and teratomas. PMP has diverse clinical manifestations and lacks specificity, making diagnosis difficu
