Additional records of Neopsittaconirmus lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) parasitizing captive parrots.

Species of the chewing louse genus Neopsittaconirmus Conci, 1942 are host-specific parasites on Old World and Australasian parrots (Psittaciformes), infesting both wild and captive birds. Despite veterinarian practices that attempt to eliminate parasites from captive hosts, two species, Neopsittaconirmus gracilis Guimarães, 1974 and Neopsittaconirmus vendulae Sychra, 2006, frequently infest captive birds, not only their regular natural hosts, but also other species that are not naturally parasitized. Here we report and discuss additional records of these two species of lice from captive parrot

Cryptosporidia in the cloacal coprodeum of red-lored parrots (Amazona autumnalis).

Cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in the cloacal coprodeum of two red-lored parrots (Amazona autumnalis). The parasites were adhered to the microvillus border of epithelial cells and their presence was associated with loss and atrophy of microvilli. Merozoites, trophozoites, gametes, and oocytes were identified with light and transmission electron microscopy. The coprodeal epithelium was hyperplastic and the lamina propria was infiltrated with moderate numbers of heterophils and lymphocytes.

High prevalence of Mycobacterium genavense within flocks of pet birds.

Mycobacterium genavense is regarded as the primary cause of mycobacteriosis in psittaciform and passeriform birds, which are commonly kept as pets. In humans, Mycobacterium genavense is especially pathogenic for young, old, pregnant and immunocompromised people (YOPIs). In birds, only few studies, mainly case reports, exist and there is still little e information about occurrence and relevance of this zoonotic pathogen. In this first pilot study concerning the prevalence of Mycobacterium genavense within flocks of naturally infected pet birds, real-time PCR examinations of 170 individual passe

Diagnosis of gastric cryptosporidiosis in birds using a duplex real-time PCR assay.

Three species and several genotypes of Cryptosporidium can infect the epithelial surface of the bursa of Fabricius, the respiratory tract, the proventriculus, the intestine, and the urinary tract in birds. There is reason to believe that gastric cryptosporidiosis in birds is caused by Cryptosporidium galli and Cryptosporidium avian genotype III, resulting in a chronic illness of the proventriculus that can lead to a debilitating and fatal clinical condition in birds of the orders Passeriformes and Psittaciformes. The objectives of the present study were to develop a duplex real-time polymerase

Functional Morphology of the Pedal Musculature and Grip Force Estimation in the Red‑and‑Green Macaw (Ara chloropterus Gray, 1859).

Psittaciformes possess zygodactyl feet that support perching, climbing, inverted postures, and foot-mediated food manipulation. Despite the functional importance of these behaviors, the myological and biomechanical bases of digital performance remain poorly documented in large-bodied psittacids, particularly macaws. Here, we investigate the digitized musculature and estimate the functional force output of the foot in the red-and-green macaw. We describe the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles acting on the digits, quantify muscle length and mass, and estimate digit-specific pinching forces based o

Avian pox in blue-fronted Amazon parrots.

During a 1-month period at a quarantine station, an epornitic of avian pox occurred in blue-fronted Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva). Clinical signs included conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and varying degrees of anorexia and respiratory distress. Lesions included periocular ulcerations and scabs and necrotic plaques in the oral cavity. Histologically, the lesions consisted of epithelial hyperplasia, secondary inflammatory changes, and eosinophilic inclusions which, by electron microscopy, were shown to contain poxvirus. When chicken embryos were inoculated with material from eyelid scabs and pha

Ascaridia hermaphrodita (Froelich, 1789) and Ascaridia columbae (Gmelin, 1780) in neotropical psittacine birds.

Gastrointestinal parasites found in four Neotropical psittacine birds of the species Ara macao, Amazona aestiva, Amazona vinacea and Pionus maximiliani have been reported. The carcasses of the animals were received from commercial breeders and a rehabilitation center for necropsy. In total, 589 parasites were collected during the exams and submitted for morphological analysis and taxonomic identification. Twenty parasites from each host were cleaned with lactophenol and analyzed by light microscopy, while four parasites from each host were prepared for scanning electron microscopy. Tissue samp

Mycetoma in a grand Eclectus (Eclectus roratus roratus) parrot.

A Grand Eclectus parrot with central nervous system disturbances and wing paralysis was necropsied. There were two grayish-black nodules in the upper left thoracic cavity and one nodule in the lower left lung. In addition, several nodules were present in the cerebral hemispheres and optic lobes. The cerebellum had extensive areas of granulomatous lesions. Microscopically, brown-staining hyphae were observed in the nodules. Curvularia geniculata was isolated from the lesions. A diagnosis of mycetoma was based on histologic lesions and isolation of fungus from the lesions.

Medical Management of a Cervical Thymoma by Radiation Therapy in an Indian Ringneck Parakeet (Psittacula krameri).

Thymomas are uncommon in birds and management is challenging because of tumor characteristics such as growth location and local invasiveness, limiting surgical and chemotherapeutic options. A 20-year-old female Indian ringneck parakeet (Psittacula krameri) was referred for radiation therapy because of an increase in size of a right-sided cervical mass. The mass was tentatively diagnosed as a thymoma after biopsy and incomplete surgical resection 3 months previously. Therapeutic management in this parakeet included 10 treatments of palliative radiation therapy over the course of 1 month. The tu

Retro-orbital and disseminated B-cell lymphoma in a yellow-collared macaw (Primolius auricollis).

A yellow-collared macaw was presented with unilateral left exophthalmia. The complete blood cell count and biochemistry revealed a heterophilic leukocytosis and elevation in liver parameters, respectively. A computed tomography scan showed a contrast-enhancing retrobulbar mass and hepatomegaly. Cytology of the liver was consistent with a round cell tumor, most likely lymphoma. The bird died after 2 months of palliative care. Postmortem examination confirmed a retro-orbital and disseminated B-cell lymphoma.

Bilateral Uveitis and Hyphema in a Catalina Macaw (Ara ararauna × Ara macao ) With Multicentric Lymphoma.

A 20-year-old, female Catalina macaw (Ara ararauna × Ara macao ) was presented with bilateral uveitis and hyphema. The hyphema initially improved with 0.12% prednisolone acetate ophthalmic drops (1 drop OU q4h for 7 days), but the hyphema recurred after the drops were tapered. The bird subsequently developed inappetance, weight loss, regurgitation, and lethargy and was euthanatized 24 days after initial presentation. Necropsy revealed marked splenomegaly and hepatomegaly, with significant mucosal ulcerations of the proventriculus and petechiation associated with both kidneys. Histopathologic e

[Phenotypical antibiotic resistances of bacteriological isolates originating from pet, zoo and falconry birds].

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of resistant bacteria in pet birds, zoo birds and falconry birds is still largely unknown. Therefore, antibiograms of rapidly-growing aerobic bacteria obtained from these birds were retrospectively evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 2007 and 2016 a total of 1036 antibiograms were evaluated. The bacteria isolates originated from 811 birds of 20 zoological orders (mostly Psittaciformes [61.8 %] and Passeriformes [14.5 %] and from alive patients or pathological examinations. The birds were primarily kept in Southern Germany. Phenotypic in vitro sensitivity of bact

Complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the northern red-shouldered macaw (Diopsittaca nobilis).

The northern red-shouldered macaw, Diopsittaca nobilis, is listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora Appendix II. Here, we report for the first time the complete mitochondrial genome of D. nobilis. This new sequence is 16,992 base pairs (bp) in length and includes 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, two ribosomal RNAs, and a single non-coding control region. The overall nucleotide composition of this sequence consists of 30.40% A, 14.00% G, 23.60% T, and 32.00% C. The phylogenetic relationships suggested that the mitogenome of D. nobil

Animal sources for zoonotic transmission of psittacosis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Human psittacosis, caused by Chlamydia (C.) psittaci, is likely underdiagnosed and underreported, since tests for C. psittaci are often not included in routine microbiological diagnostics. Source tracing traditionally focuses on psittacine pet birds, but recently other animal species have been gaining more attention as possible sources for human psittacosis. This review aims to provide an overview of all suspected animal sources of human psittacosis cases reported in the international literature. In addition, for each animal species the strength of evidence for zoonotic transmissio

Closed Reduction of a Rostroparasphenopalatal Luxation in a Red-crowned Parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae).

A 1-year-old red-crowned parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae) was presented with an acute onset of hyperprotraction of the upper beak and an inability to return the beak to its normal position. With the abnormal beak position, the bird was unable to eat. Standard radiographic images of the head supported a diagnosis of a rostroparasphenopalatal luxation. The luxation was reduced with a 23-gauge hypodermic needle inserted dorsal to the palatine bone and directed ventrally. After the procedure, the bird regained its normal beak function within 2 hours.

Surgical removal of a retrobulbar adenoma in an African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus).

An African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus) was presented with exophthalmos and a semisolid mass dorsomedial to the left eye that led to ventrotemporal deviation of the globe. Ultrasonography of the eye revealed a well-demarcated mass of cystic appearance, retrobulbar to the left eye. Cultures of samples of the mass acquired by fine needle aspiration were negative for bacteria and Mycoplasma species. Metaplasia of a periorbital gland caused by hypovitaminosis A was suspected, and vitamin A supplementation was initiated. Because of unresponsiveness to therapy, the cystic mass was surgically re

Evaluation of a bacteriological and mycological examination of psittacine birds.

Results are presented from a microbiological (bacteriological and mycological) investigation and the sensitivity tests of microorganisms isolated over a 2-year period (1983-84) from 80 fecal samples and 466 necropsies of psittacine birds. These results are correlated with signs of metaplasia of the salivary glands due to vitamin A deficiency in large parrots and with low vitamin A levels in the livers of small psittacine birds. Aerobic microorganisms were isolated from 76% of the fecal samples and 67% of the necropsies. Infections with primary pathogenic bacteria were found in less than 10% of

Microbial community composition variation in relation to malaria infections in Junco hyemalis.

The association between gut microbiota community composition and parasitic infections can result in complex interactions that impact host health. Determining whether microbiota composition impacts a host's susceptibility to infections or parasitic infections that alter the microbiota will have important implications for mitigation strategies. In this study, we characterized and compared the microbiota of eight wild Oregon Juncos (Junco hyemalis) infected with Plasmodium relictum GRW04 and eight non-infected individuals. Our results found that alpha diversity was significantly lower in infected
