AIMS: To identify the work factors that predict sickness absence in nurses' aides.
METHODS: The sample comprised 5563 Norwegian nurses' aides, not on leave because of illness or pregnancy when they completed a mailed questionnaire in 1999. Of these, 4931 (88.6%) completed a second questionnaire three months later. The outcome measure was the three month incidence proportion of certified sickness absence (>3 days), as assessed by self reports at follow up.
RESULTS: Perceived lack of encouraging and supportive culture in the work unit (odds ratio (OR) 1.73; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.28 to

Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) is a complex genetic syndrome caused by an interstitial deletion of chromosome 17p11.2. Children and adults with SMS appear to have unique neurobehavioral problems that include: sleep disturbance, self-injurious and maladaptive behaviors, stereotypies, and sensory integration disorders. We gathered retrospective psychotropic use information from parents or other caregivers of 62 individuals with SMS who were asked about use of psychotropic medication from a list of commonly used psychiatric medications. For those drugs identified, respondents were asked to rate the

BACKGROUND: Previous research on patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) has indicated negative effects, including increased suicidality, from long hospital admissions and paternalism. Still, long-term compulsory admissions have been reported to occur regularly. Less is known about how healthcare personnel perceives these admissions and to what extent they think the use of compulsory care can be diminished. This study addresses those questions to make care more beneficial.
METHODS: A questionnaire study, the respondents being nurses and psychiatric aides employed at psychiatric ho

Workplace violence, a possible cause of job stress, has recently become an important concern in occupational health. This study determined the prevalence of workplace violence and its risk factors for employees at a psychiatric hospital in Taiwan. A questionnaire developed by ILO/ICN/WHO/PSI was first translated and validated. It was then used to survey the prevalence of workplace violence in the last 12 months experienced by all nursing aides, nurses, and clerks at the hospital. Multiple logistic regression models were constructed to discover the determinants of violence. A total of 222 out o

Psychiatric patient violence adversely affects healthcare workers' quality of life and patient quality of care. In contrast to the common adult patient emphasis, the present study was designed to examine the relationship between healthcare staff-directed verbal and physical violence exhibited by children and adolescent psychiatric inpatients and post-traumatic stress (PTSD) symptoms, emotional labour, and physical and mental fatigue of staff. Our cross- sectional study recruited 113 multidisciplinary staff members working in child and adolescent psychiatric wards: 33 (29.2%) educational staff,

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection with central nervous system (CNS) involvement causes a variety of psychiatric complications among a significant proportion of infected individuals. A cure for the fully developed AIDS related to HIV infection remains elusive, and HIV/AIDS is a leading cause of death among adults between the ages of 25 and 44. Life expectancy, however, has gradually increased over the years, resulting in a concern for a potential increase in the incidence of secondary psychiatric manifestations. Knowledge of the neuropathology of HIV-CNS dysfunction and familiarity w

Data on initial psychiatric evaluations performed in 1995 were compared to assess whether psychiatric consultation for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients provided on-site in an infectious disease (ID) clinic improved compliance and were preferred by staff to evaluations performed in a specialized AIDS psychiatric program. Compliance with initial appointments remained below 50% in both settings, but more patients seen in the ID clinic had received prior psychiatric treatment and medication and they were more likely to receive a psychot

HIV disease continues to be a serious health issue all over the world. By the end of 2016, 36.7 million people were living with HIV, 1.8 million people became newly infected and 1 million died of HIV-related causes/diseases. In order to develop effective treatment strategies, is important to assess the risk factors that affect negatively the HIV-positive patients. HIV-infected patients are at high risk of developing psychiatric disorders in every stage of the illness. Psychiatric disorders can negatively influence the treatment adherence, induce risk behavior and influence the quality of life.

An association between suicide and the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) has been noted in several epidemiologic studies. Numerous case reports also support the trend of an increased suicide risk in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and persons with AIDS. A variety of medical, neurologic, and psychiatric factors may contribute to the death of an HIV patient. I present the case of a 27-year-old man who committed suicide approximately 2 years after he received a diagnosis of AIDS. He had no previous psychiatric history. It is imperative that physicians caring for

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic has created a multidimensional crisis that is challenging the health care system. Individuals with or without risk behaviors have anxieties about acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and need support and counseling. Once symptoms of HIV infection develop, crisis intervention and support need to be integrated into ongoing medical care. A biopsychosocial approach enables persons with AIDS to develop strategies for coping, to improve adherence, and to prevent transmission and suicide. Persons with AIDS are confronted with severe illnesses, neur

Rates of HIV infection, STDs, and sexual and drug-use risk behaviors are high among people with severe mental illness. Clinicians often are in the best position to connect psychiatric patients to the particular HIV-related services they need. These may include prevention interventions, risk assessment, antibody test counseling, and medical care. This review article describes the AIDS epidemic and its underpinnings in this population in an effort to help clinicians to recognize when their patients are at risk for acquiring or transmitting the virus and to intervene appropriately and effectively

Two AIDS patients with mania were found to have cryptococcal meningitis. In patients with AIDS or AIDS-related complex, physicians must thoroughly investigate the possibility of an organically based psychiatric syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined HIV-positive subjects to determine the relationship of patient complaints of cognitive and motor dysfunction to psychiatric status and performance on established cognitive and motor function tests.
METHOD: HIV-positive volunteers (N = 77) were evaluated at entry into a longitudinal neurological study. Forty were asymptomatic, 29 had AIDS-related complex, and eight had AIDS. The subjects were not selected for the presence or absence of cognitive or motor complaints. Complaints of cognitive and motor dysfunction were assessed with items from the AIDS Clinical Tri

Short-term psychiatric hospitalization, developed during the past 2 decades, needs thorough evaluation with regard to its advantages. It is important to be able to identify those patients who might be aided by such treatment. Therefore the psychiatric emergency room physician should have at hand a model which would enable quick and relatively accurate decisions in identifying such patients. Our work shows that they are either without previous psychiatric history or had been admitted for less than 2 months; that they had suffered from depression, anxiety, personality disorder or addiction; that

This article describes eight cases of patients treated at the Psychiatric Department of the University Central Hospital of Turku (UCHT) Finland who all had as a common feature an unfounded fear of AIDS. Three of the patients committed suicide and one of them had overt suicidal tendencies. An unfounded fear of AIDS may be a sign of psychiatric disturbance with increased suicidal risk. Increased fear of AIDS seems to have correlation with media and counselling services. Owing to the fact that these patients primarily seek medical help from other fields of medicine than psychiatry, they are a new

The purpose of this case-control study was to elucidate the relative proportions of amphetamine use disorder (AUD) and amphetamine-induced disorder (AID) in a group of adolescents with the use of methamphetamine (MAMP) and to examine the risks for psychiatric comorbidity and sex for MAMP use. Psychiatric comorbidity in the preceding year was determined for 200 adolescent MAMP users and 400 drug-free control subjects by diagnostic interview using the Kiddie epidemiologic version of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia. The proportions of AUD and AID were calculated, and the as

Research on adults with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) has suggested that psychiatric and substance abuse comorbidities are prevalent in this population, and that these may sometimes be associated with use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and adherence. For adolescents with HIV/AIDS, much less is known about patterns of mental health comorbidity, and even fewer data are available that compare them to socioeconomically comparable youth without HIV/AIDS. Using medical and pharmacy data from 1999 to 2000 Medicaid claims (Medicaid Analytic Extract) from 4

Neuropsychiatric complications of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) may present clinically as acute or chronic organic brain syndrome, or mimic functional psychiatric diseases. Among such psychiatric diseases, mania tends to occur with increased frequency after the onset of AIDS. We report a case in which manic manifestations were noted before the diagnosis of AIDS. The patient had no past or family history of mood disorders, but had risk factors for HIV infection. He had a rapid downhill course from initial manic symptoms to depression,

Psychiatric symptoms among patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) may be functional reactions to contracting a fatal and stigmatizing disease or may be secondary to malignancies and opportunistic infections in the central nervous system (CNS). More recent evidence indicates that HTLV-III, the virus that causes AIDS, directly infects the CNS and may cause psychiatric symptoms before signs of immunodeficiency, cognitive impairment, or neurological abnormalities emerge. AIDS-related organic mental syndromes may mimic functional disorders such as chronic mild depression and acute

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) has become a major public health problem with over 12,000 cases and 6,000 deaths reported to date. Although there has been an explosion of knowledge in the virology, immunology and pathology of AIDS, relatively little has been written on the neuropsychiatric aspects. This report reviews the existing literature on the neuropsychiatric complications of AIDS. As many as 40 percent of patients with AIDS have neurologic complications at some point in their illness. These complications include either focal deficits attributable to opportunistic organisms in
