From suicide risk prevention to treatment, the suicidal crisis process must be known to all carers to ensure appropriate and effective care. The psychiatry liaison team at the Nantes University Hospital advocates it with somatic teams through its liaison and consultation work. At the heart of this care network, the clinical expertise of the psychiatric liaison nurse educates nursing colleagues in identifying suicide risk. The nurse's clinical assessment and knowledge of the care system optimises the overall management and the path of patient care.

Psychiatric healthcare services in Japan demand continuous improvement to ensure quality care. Psychiatric nurse administrators and managers greatly influence the quality of services. To improve treatment, the following are considered necessary: clarification of service goal, proper assessment of treatment outcome, shortening of hospitalization, patient-centered care, establishment of trust relationships based on open communication with patients, and effective interdisciplinary teamwork. Additionally, administrators and managers must evaluate the clinical competence of individual nurses and ap

Recent discoveries in the field of molecular biology and increased attention to genetic epidemiology have stimulated renewed interest in the genetics of psychiatric disorders. Tourette's syndrome, a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and phonic tics, is used as a model to describe the research strategies employed in the genetic epidemiology of child psychiatric disorders. The relevance of genetic research findings to child psychiatric nursing is also discussed.

Among patients with psychiatric disorders, especially schizophrenia, a pattern of extreme polydipsia and polyuria sometimes emerges, usually without readily identifiable medical causes. Hyponatremia may develop and progress to water intoxication, with symptoms including restlessness, confusion, seizures, or even death. We review the clinical features and pathophysiology of this syndrome and discuss nursing roles in identifying and managing patients with polydipsia and hyponatremia. While the causes of polydipsia and hyponatremia are unclear, relevant factors seem to include a possible dysfunct

On July 24, 2025, a U.S. executive order reframed unsheltered homelessness around public order, encouraged broader civil commitment, prioritized enforcement of camping restrictions, and directed agencies away from Housing First. This policy paper analyzes how those levers may shift coercion and administrative burden into psychiatric settings. Likely nursing effects include role drift toward legal-interface work, thinner voluntariness, documentation pressure, moral distress, and capacity strain. Canadian Housing First evidence and World Health Organization rights-based guidance provide internat

Psychiatric nurses are familiar with the concept of personality disorder because of their contact with persons with the most common personality disorder in clinical settings - borderline type, who frequently engage mental health services. Perhaps it is this familiarity that has focused research and clinical attention on borderline personality disorder compared with the other personality disorders. The significance of cluster A personality disorders for nursing is multifaceted because of their severity, prevalence, inaccurate diagnosis, poor response to treatment, and similarities to axis I dia

Entry-level health care professionals are socialized to accept the norms and values associated with institutions in which violence and suffering is considered an anticipated and even routine and normalized part of frontline care. The objective of the study was to illuminate the subjective experience of psychological trauma in graduates from a baccalaureate nursing and psychiatric nursing program using the McGill Illness Narrative Interview, an ethnographic interview guide. Participants included graduates from each program in a western Canadian province who reflected back on their experiences o

Wellbeing of nurses is associated with patient aggression. Little is known about the differences in these associations between nurses working in different specialties. We aimed to estimate and compare the prevalence of patient aggression and the associations between patient aggression and the wellbeing of nurses in psychiatric and non-psychiatric specialties (medical and surgical, and emergency medicine). A sample of 5288 nurses (923 psychiatric nurses, 4070 medical and surgical nurses, 295 emergency nurses) participated in the study. Subjective measures were used to assess both the occurrence

AIM: To explore and investigate differences between the views of qualified nurses working in psychiatric intensive care units (PICUs) and acute care wards on which patients are appropriate for PICU care.
BACKGROUND: Previous research on the area of psychiatric intensive care highlights the great differences that exist in all aspects of service provision, from unit size and staffing levels to treatment approaches and physical environment. One of the most common areas of controversy is the type of client behaviour that warrants admission to the PICU.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder characterized by disruptions in thought processes, perceptions, emotional responsiveness, and social interactions. Clozapine, a second-generation antipsychotic, is commonly prescribed for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. However, its use is frequently associated with side effects, notably hypersalivation. This case report discusses the clinical consequences of clozapine-induced hypersalivation, emphasizing the importance of individualized nursing care planning.
METHODS: The descriptive case report presents the clinical course of a 47-

OBJECTIVES: Tobacco use increases morbidity and mortality among its users. The rate of tobacco use is declining in the general adult population yet is two to three times higher for those experiencing mental health disorders, specifically those with serious mental illness (SMI). Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) are well-positioned to treat tobacco use in patients with SMI, yet tobacco training during nursing education, both in amount of time spent and content delivered, is not well understood and can leave PMHNPs ill-prepared to intervene.

PURPOSE: Nurses and nurse educators perceive a lack of knowledge, education, training, and educational materials related to dissociative disorders (DDs) and dissociative symptoms. Additionally, nurses and nurse educators report bias around the teaching of these concepts. Previous research on undergraduate psychopathology textbooks indicated insufficient and inaccurate coverage of dissociation and related concepts, but no such studies had been conducted within the profession of nursing. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the presentation of DDs, dissociation, and related symptom

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Nursing observations at night are conducted on psychiatric wards to ensure the safety and well-being of patients as well as to reduce the risk of suicide or severe harm. To our knowledge, no studies have examined the lived experience of the psychiatric ward environment and of nursing observations at night. WHAT DOES THE PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: The main complaint from patients was the constant interruption of their sleep, as most of the patients in this study were observed 2-4 times an hour. Their sleep was interrupted by (a) the light from torches shone

Mental health services in low income countries are inadequate. Health care delivery services in these countries are mainly focused on vector-borne diseases and HIV/AIDS. To make the situation worse, trained health workers are leaving developing countries for higher paying jobs elsewhere; this "brain drain" is robbing countries of their energetic and highly trained manpower. In response to this dire situation, Ethiopia started a psychiatric nursing training program where by nurses are trained and assigned to different parts of the country as mental health workers. Their activities range from pr
