Evaluation of psychoacoustic tests and P300 event-related potentials in elderly patients with hyperhomocysteinemia.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Hyperhomocysteinemia as a risk factor for hearing impairment, neuronal damage and cognitive impairment in elderly patients is controversial and is limited by the small number of studies. The aim of this work was determine if elderly patients detected with hyperhomocysteinemia have an increased risk of developing abnormalities in the central auditory processes as compared with a group of patients with appropriate homocysteine levels, and to define the behaviour of psychoacoustic tests and long latency potentials (P300) in these patients. METHODS: This was a cross-s

Poor frequency discrimination is related to oral language disorder in children: a psychoacoustic study.

Some children have difficulty in perceiving differences between sounds, even though they have normal hearing sensitivity, and it has been suggested that such problems could lead to difficulties in language and literacy development. Poor ability to distinguish sounds on the basis of frequency (perceived as pitch) has been described in poor readers on a variety of auditory processing tasks. The aim of the present study was three-fold: to determine whether children with specific language impairment (SLI) have difficulty discriminating frequency, whether this deficit is specific to the frequency d

The time resolution of changes in short duration signal changes-psychoacoustical and electrophysiological studies.

Besides intensity and frequency analysis, time resolution ability is an important factor of auditory processing. Psychoacoustical and electrophysiological studies of peripheral and central time analysis phenomena have been performed to obtain more information as to this ability of the hearing organ. By presenting bursts of noise including short-duration intensity or frequency changes we analysed the sensation levels of these short-lasting changes in signal structure. In normally hearing subjects we derived time constants between 3 and 50 ms depending on the degree of intensity or frequency cha

Auditory processing in normally hearing individuals with and without tinnitus: assessment with four psychoacoustic tests.

PURPOSE: In most cases, tinnitus co-exists with hearing loss, suggesting that poorer speech understanding is simply due to a lack of acoustic information reaching the central nervous system (CNS). However, it also happens that patients with tinnitus who have normal hearing also report problems with speech understanding, and it is possible to suppose that tinnitus is to blame for difficulties in perceptual processing of auditory information. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the auditory processing abilities of normally hearing subjects with and without tinnitus. METHODS: The study grou

Inter-relationship between different psychoacoustic measures assumed to be related to the cochlear active mechanism.

The active mechanism in the cochlea is thought to depend on the integrity of the outer hair cells (OHCs). Cochlear hearing loss is usually associated with damage to both inner hair cells (IHCs) and OHCs, with the latter resulting in a reduction in or complete loss of the function of the active mechanism. It is believed that the active mechanism contributes to the sharpness of tuning on the basilar membrane (BM) and is also responsible for compressive input-output functions on the BM. Hence, one would expect a close relationship between measures of sharpness of tuning and measures of compressio

[Determination of the impaired ear's frequency selectivity using psychoacoustical tuning curves (author's transl)].

An apparatus for clinical use is described by which simplified psychoacoustical tuning curves can be measured near 500 Hz and near 4 kHz. Data produced by four groups (normal hearing, conductive hearing loss, noise induced hearing loss and degenerative hearing loss) are separately averaged and compared. The first mentioned two groups as well as the third in the low frequency range show good frequency resolution, the others, however, show largely decreased frequency resolution.

Gender effect on Psychoacoustical abilities and Speech perception in noise in individuals with Sickle cell anemia.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell anemia (SCA), a genetic hemoglobin disorder, suggests essential inner ear compromise and poor auditory processing. In humans, auditory processing differs physiologically between males and females, possibly true for SCA due to gender-specific disease pathophysiological changes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate gender differences in psychoacoustical abilities, and speech perception in noise in SCA individuals and further compare with normal healthy (NH) population. METHODS: 80 SCA and 80 NH normal-hearing participants aged 15-40 years were included and further grouped based on

Perception Versus Reaction: Comparison of Tinnitus Psychoacoustic Measures and Tinnitus Functional Index Scores.

Purpose Psychoacoustic characteristics of tinnitus include its loudness and pitch. These characteristics are commonly measured and reported; however, it has not been shown that they are associated with the impact, or bothersomeness, of tinnitus. This study addressed this question by determining correlations between measures of tinnitus loudness, tinnitus pitch, and functional effects of tinnitus. Method Tinnitus loudness matches, pitch matches, a numeric rating scale (NRS) of tinnitus loudness, and responses to the 25-item tinnitus functional index (TFI) were obtained from 223 participants who

Reference values for psychoacoustic tests on Polish school children 7-10 years old.

BACKGROUND: Good hearing is a fundamental skill that allows children to develop properly, both socially and intellectually. In contrast to defects in inner ear function, however, auditory processing disorders (APDs)-which can affect up to 2-3% of school-children-are not easily identified with basic screening programs and must be diagnosed using special tests. Although such psychoacoustic tests are available, the scores achieved depend highly on the social, cultural, and linguistic characteristics of the population, and norms must be established for each population separately. Reference values

[Relationship between voice spectrum analysis and psychoacoustic evaluation in patients with vocal cords polyps].

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the significance of selected acoustic parameters, to determine their usfulness in monitoring effects of treatments, to correlate them to other clinical voice tests (such as aerodynamic measurements, stroboscopic examination, psychoacoustic evaluation), and to determin if there were correlations among the acoustic parameters. The results showed that pitch perturbation quotient (PPQ), amplitude perturbation quotient (APQ), normalized noise energy a and b (NNEa and NNEb) were positively related to the regularity (REG) in the vocal cord polyp. In the pre

Psychoacoustically guided midfrequency band-limiting improves the diagnostic utility of classical acoustic measures in dysphonia.

Human hearing is most sensitive around 3 kHz, where small changes in harmonic structure and noise are particularly noticeable. However, traditional or standard acoustic measures of dysphonia—jitter, shimmer, harmonics-to-noise ratio, and cepstral peak prominence smoothed—are usually calculated from full-band signals and do not account for this psychoacoustic weighting. Consequently, their diagnostic accuracy is often reduced in connected speech and cases of mild dysphonia, which are common clinical presentations. We tested a simple, low-cost preprocessing strategy that limited analysis to the

Improvement of perceived cochlear implant sound quality through individualized psychoacoustic-based frequency fitting.

OBJECTIVE: In recent years, there has been a trend toward more individualization in the fitting of cochlear implants (CI). Here, a new individualized approach to frequency band allocation was used. This approach is based on binaural perceptual pitch matching. PATIENT: The patient had congenital bilateral progressive sensorineural hearing loss due to Usher Syndrome. He had used hearing aids in both ears since the age of 4 years. In his mid-40s, he received a CI on his right ear and, ten months later, a second CI on the left ear. INTERVENTION: Adjustments to the frequency band allocations were

Automatic identification of tinnitus malingering based on overt and covert behavioral responses during psychoacoustic testing.

Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, is a prevalent condition that imposes a substantial health and financial burden on the patient and to society. The diagnosis of tinnitus, like pain, relies on patient self-report, which can complicate the distinction between actual and fraudulent claims. Here, we combined tablet-based self-directed hearing assessments with neural network classifiers to automatically differentiate participants with tinnitus (N = 24) from a malingering cohort, who were instructed to feign an imagined tinnitus percept (N = 28). We identified clear differences between the groups,

Contralateral efferent reflex effects on threshold and suprathreshold psychoacoustical tuning curves at low and high frequencies.

Medial olivocochlear efferent neurons can control cochlear frequency selectivity and may be activated in a reflexive manner by contralateral sounds. The present study investigated the significance of the contralateral medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) on human psychoacoustical tuning curves (PTCs), a behavioral correlate of cochlear tuning curves. PTCs were measured using forward masking in the presence and in the absence of a contralateral white noise, assumed to elicit the MOCR. To assess MOCR effects on apical and basal cochlear regions over a wide range of sound levels, PTCs were measured

The Effects of Broadband Elicitor Duration on Transient-Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions and a Psychoacoustic Measure of Gain Reduction.

PURPOSE: Measures of the human medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) typically rely on long duration (> 100 ms) or continuously presented broadband elicitors. MOCR gain reduction measured by otoacoustic emissions (OAE) exhibits multiple time constants, including in the hundreds of milliseconds, when elicited by broadband noise. Psychoacoustic studies of gain reduction have largely adopted these elicitor characteristics, but less is known about how broadband elicitor duration affects auditory perception. Additionally, the literature on the relationship between psychoacoustic and OAE measures of ga

Auditory evoked potentials: Differences by sex, race, and menstrual cycle and correlations with common psychoacoustical tasks.

Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and auditory middle-latency responses (AMLRs) to a click stimulus were measured in about 100 subjects. Of interest were the sex differences in those auditory evoked potentials (AEPs), the correlations between the various AEP measures, and the correlations between the AEP measures and measures of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and behavioral performance also measured on the same subjects. Also of interest was how the menstrual cycle affected the various AEP measures. Most ABR measures and several AMLR measures exhibited sex differences, and many of the former w
