The clinical dilemmas in this 6 year analysis, with this single woman in her 30s, (whom I saw mostly in candidacy), unfolded into a dramatic, yet simultaneously stalled analysis that remained intrapsychically frozen. This paper deals with certain distortions in communication generated by mutual recrimination that is the result of disturbances in the ideal agencies of both parties. Although the ideal ego, superego and ego ideal participate equally in reproach, it is the latter which is the most decisive. In clinical experience, recrimination may easily colour the analytic dialogue. In such cases, interpretation loses its sense of clarification and another type of dialogue replaces it. This paper presents three different conceptualizations (interpretations) of the phenomenon of "repetition compulsion" in the various psychoanalytic schools that refers explicitly to this conception--as return to, return of (reproduction) or recreation (transcendental transformation), or as a linear, circular or spiral-like psychic movement accordingly. The paper analyzes the metapsychological assumptions of each mode of interpretation and tries to relate the psychic models underlying these conceptions to the questions of psychotherapeutic attitude and technique in the clinical situation.
