A taxonomic reassessment of the Phlebotomus argentipes species complex (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae).

The taxonomic status of the sand fly Phlebotomus (Euphlebotomus) argentipes Annandale & Brunette 1908, which transmits Leishmania (Leishmania) donovani (Laveran & Mesnil 1903) in southern Asia, is reassessed, because variation in morphology, behavior, and distribution suggests it to be a complex of sibling species. The putative complex is composed of the nominotypical member Phlebotomus argentipes sensu stricto, Phlebotomus annandalei Sinton 1923 status revived and Phlebotomus glaucus Mitra & Roy 1953 new status. An allolectotype is designated for the female of P. argentipes as well as neotype

Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) and urbanization of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil.

The article discusses habits related to the vectorial competence of Lutzomyia longipalpis, along with evidence confirming the importance of this sand fly species in the epidemiological chain of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. A new epidemiological profile for visceral leishmaniasis is also postulated, associated with domestic environments and the role of Lu. longipalpis in this process, its sylvatic origin, and its capacity to adapt to a wide range of habitats. Another sand fly species, Lu. cruzi, is mentioned as a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in some municipalities in Central Brazil, ba

Activity of Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis and L. longipalpis s.l. (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Venezuela.

The nocturnal activity of the phlebotomine sandfly Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis and two populations of L. longipalpis s.l. from different American visceral leishmaniasis foci in Venezuela was studied using collection bottle rotator traps. The activity of L. pseudolongipalpis from Lara State was continuous throughout the night, while that of L. longipalpis s.l. from El Layero, Guárico State and from Santa Ana del Valle, Margarita Island, was greatest before 23:00 h. The activity of sandflies of both populations and sexes steadily decreased thereafter. These different patterns seem to correlate w

Wing geometry as a tool for studying the Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) complex.

Toro Toro (T) and Yungas (Y) have been described as genetically well differentiated populations of the Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) complex in Bolivia. Here we use geometric morphometrics to compare samples from these populations and new populations (Bolivia and Nicaragua), representing distant geographical origins, qualitative morphological variation ("one-spot" or "two-spots" phenotypes), ecologically distinct traits (peridomestic and silvatic populations), and possibly different epidemiological roles (transmitting or nor transmitting Leishmania chagasi). Laboratory observations on mating and leklike aggregations in Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae).

The mating behavior of the sand fly, Lutzomyia longipalpis, was studied under laboratory conditions. Male sand flies landed on the bodies of anesthetized mice, where they exhibited leklike displays such as wing fanning, parading, and aggression. Lek behavior was more frequent in older males, and dominance hierarchies were established. Male sand flies at leks copulated more frequently than male sand flies at other locations in the cage. Females mated by older males produced more eggs than did females mated by younger males; however, there was no difference in the number of larvae produced.

MOSQUITOES (DIPTERA, PSYCHODIDAE, PHLEBOTOMINAE) IN THE CRIMEA: SPECIES COMPOSITION, SPREAD, ENVIRONMENTAL FEATURES.

Crimea was known to be a mosquito-borne fever (pappataci fever) endemic area in the past. There is information on sporadic cases of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), the vectors for which are also mosquitoes. This disease was registered in Crimea in both the 20h century and the early 21st century. The data available in the literature on the mosquitoes in Crimea, which were published mainly in the first half of the 20th century, have been analyzed. Based on the classification of these insects, which has been proposed by M.M. Artemyev, the authors have established that there are 8 mosquito species: P

Laboratory estimation of degree-day developmental requirements of Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is one of the most important vector-borne endemic diseases in Turkey. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of temperature on the developmental rates of one important vector of leishmaniasis, Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli, 1786) (Diptera: Psychodidae). Eggs from laboratory-reared colonies of Phlebotomus papatasi were exposed to six constant temperature regimes from 15 to 32 degrees C with a daylength of 14 h and relative humidity of 65-75%. No adult emergence was observed at 15 degrees C. Complete egg to adult development ranged from 27.89 +/- 1

Phlebotomus (Paraphlebotomus) gemetchi (Diptera: Psychodidae), a new sand fly species from Ethiopia.

The subgenus Paraphlebotomus of Phlebotomus includes several sand fly vectors of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. A new species of the subgenus Paraphlebotomus, named Phlebotomus gemetchi is described from the volcanic blisters by the shore of lake Beseka near Metahara, Upper Awash Valley, in the Rift Valley of eastern Ethiopia. The presence of one distinct character in the male genitalia (a bifurcating 'y'-shaped spine at the middle of the style) and three characters in the female (lengths of the fourth antennal and palpal segments and labrum) easily distinguish it from the other Afrotro

Domesticity of Lutzomyia whitmani (Diptera: psychodidae) populations: field experiments indicate behavioural differences.

The sandfly Lutzomyia whitmani (Antunes & Coutinho) is an important vector for cutaneous leishmaniasis throughout much of Brazil, and has recently been shown to consist of more than one mitochondrial lineage. It has frequently been asserted that the degree of adaptation of L. whitmani to human environments varies across its range. As a standardized test of indoor feeding for three geographically distant populations of L. whitmani, catches inside experimental chicken sheds of varying degrees of wall closure (0%, 33%, 67% and 98%) were compared. Each increment in shed closure reduced catches of

Survey of sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in an environmentally protected area in Brazil.

Brazil is one of the most important endemic areas for leishmaniasis worldwide. Protected areas that are tourist attractions likely present an important risk of transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Furthermore, with the geographical expansion of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), several studies have recorded the occurrence of its vector, Lutzomyia longipalpis, and cases of human and canine VL in such tourist areas. The Parque Estadual do Sumidouro is an environmentally protected area located in the Brazilian Cerrado biome and in an important area endemic for leishmaniasis in the state of Mi

Techniques to improve the maintenance of a laboratory colony of Nyssomyia neivai (Diptera: Psychodidae).

BACKGROUND: The most critical phase in sand fly colonization is the high mortality in the larval instars. In this study, we sought out strategies for improving the colonization of Nyssomyia neivai, one of the vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis agent in South America. METHODS: A colony of Ny. neivai was established in the laboratory from a field population, and the productivity of adults was evaluated considering carrying capacity, diet for larvae and surface for oviposition. RESULTS: The highest emergency rate of adults was achieved with the fewest couples inside 150 mL rearing chambers on a

[Urogenital Myiasis Caused by Psychoda albipennis (Diptera: Psychodidae) in a Woman in Siirt].

Urogenital myiasis cases occurring with the settlement of larvae of flies belonging to the order Diptera are facultative and are rarely encountered in humans. In this study, urogenital myiasis caused by Psychoda albipennis in a 20-year-old female patient was presented. The patient was admitted to our hospital with complaints of nausea, vomiting, and dysuria and claimed that she saw motile larvae in her urine. Five larvae collected from the patient's urine were microscopically examined, and they were identified as fourth-stage larvae of Psychoda albipennis. Complaints of the patient ceased afte

Sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in a focus of visceral leishmaniasis in White Nile, Sudan.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has been known to occur since the 1980s on the western bank of the White Nile River (Central Sudan), 150 km south of Khartoum, and has resulted in high mortality. The most recent outbreak of the disease in this area began in 2006. Entomological surveys were carried out during May 2008, June 2010 and May and July 2011 in the White Nile area. Sandflies were collected using Centers for Disease Control light traps and sticky oil traps in the village of Kadaba and the nearby woodland. Phlebotomus females were dissected for the presence of Leishmania promastigotes. A tota

Pathogen screening and bionomics of Lutzomyia apache (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Wyoming, USA.

Phlebotomine sand flies are vectors of bacteria, parasites, and viruses. Lutzomyia apache, a North American sand fly, was incriminated as a vector of vesicular stomatitis viruses (VSV) due to overlapping ranges of the sand fly and recent outbreaks of VSV. We report on the discovery of 2 populations of L. apache in Wyoming from Albany and Fremont counties. We attempted to isolate VSV and phleboviruses from sand flies from Albany County and screened select flies by polymerase chain reaction for Bartonella and blood meals. We did not isolate viruses or detect DNA from vertebrate hosts or Bartonel

[Sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in an outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the State of Minas Gerais].

Between January and December 2000, systematic monthly capture of phlebotomine sandflies was undertaken by means of light traps of CDC type in Brejo do Mutambal, an endemic area for American cutaneous leishmaniasis located in the municipality of Varzelândia, State of Minas Gerais. Nineteen phlebotomine species were captured, totaling 6,756 specimens. The species correlated with ACL transmission were captured in low numbers, as follows: Lutzomyia intermedia (5.1%), L. migonei (0.4%) and L. whitmani (0.1%). Lutzomyia longipalpis was the predominant species captured (34.8%), thus also suggesting a

An inventory of the phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) found in the Turkish province of Konya.

Between the April and October of 1997, the sandflies in six areas (Centrum, Altinekin, Kadinhani, Cumra, Beysehir and Bozkir) of the Turkish province of Konya, in Central Anatolia, were surveyed. All the sandflies were caught close to houses, on sticky-paper traps placed in barns used by livestock. All 127 specimens of Sergentomyia collected were either S. theodori (86.6%) or S. dentata (13.4%). The other 2017 sandflies caught represented 12 species of Phlebotomus - mostly P. papatasi (78.4%) or P. halepensis (10.9%), with P. sergenti (3.8%), P. simici (2.2%), P. kandelakii (1.6%), P. similis

Experimental Colonization of Sand Flies (Lutzomyia longipalpis; Diptera: Psychodidae) by Bartonella ancashensis.

Background: Bartonella ancashensis is a recently described Bartonella species endemic to Peru, where it causes verruga peruana in humans. While the arthropod vector of B. ancashensis transmission is unknown, human coinfections with Bartonella bacilliformis suggest that phlebotomine sand flies are a vector. Materials and Methods: To address the hypothesis that sand flies are involved in the bacterium's transmission, Lutzomyia longipalpis sand flies were used as an infection model, together with green fluorescent protein-expressing B. ancashensis. Results: Results showed that bacterial infection

Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) Argentina-Bolivia border: new report and genetic diversity.

American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) has two main scenarios of transmission as follows: scattered cases in rural areas and urban outbreaks. Urban AVL is in active dispersion from the northeastern border of Argentina-Paraguay-Brazil to the South. The presence of Lutzomyia longipalpis was initially reported in urban environments in the northwestern border of the country. The presence of Lu. longipalpis, environmental variables associated with its distribution, and its genetic diversity were assessed in Salvador Mazza, Argentina, on the border with Bolivia. The genetic analysis showed high haplo

Pheromone gland development and pheromone production in lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae).

The sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) is the main vector of American visceral leishmaniasis. Adult males produce a terpenoid sex pheromone that in some cases also acts as male aggregation pheromone. We have analyzed the correlation between male pheromone production levels and pheromone gland cell morphogenesis after adult emergence from pupae. The abdominal tergites of L. longipalpis males were dissected and fixed in glutaraldehyde for transmission electron microscopy, or the pheromone was extracted in analytical grade hexane.
