A new set of 272 pictures for psycholinguistic studies: Persian norms for name agreement, image agreement, conceptual familiarity, visual complexity, and age of acquisition.

Pictures are often used in studies on memory, perception, and language; normative data are thus needed for such visual stimuli. In the present study, we aimed to obtain normative data for a set of 272 black-and-white pictures from middle-aged and elderly Persian speakers. A total of 206 volunteers were divided into two groups: a middle-aged (40-59 years old) group and an elderly (60 years old and over) group. The groups had similar characteristics in terms of education. Norms for every picture were developed to provide measures of name agreement, image agreement, conceptual familiarity, age of

Linguistics, human communication and psychiatry.

BACKGROUND: Psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics have extended our understanding of the abnormal communication seen in psychosis, as well as that of people with autism and Asperger's syndrome. Psycholinguistics has the potential to increase the explanatory power of cognitive and neuropsychological approaches to psychosis and new methods of assessment and therapy are now being developed, based on linguistic theory. METHOD: A MEDLINE literature search was used. RESULTS: Of 205 relevant articles identified, 65 were selected for review. CONCLUSIONS: Greater familiarity with linguistic theory

Developmental Dyslexia: Where Do We Go from Here?

This editorial follows an influential review paper published in Brain Sciences in 2018 (What is Developmental Dyslexia? by John Stein). In this editorial, I present a critical look at the arguments in Stein's review, with a particular view towards "looking ahead". In looking ahead, I will focus on why dyslexia has been largely neglected by psycholinguistics and, in particular, shortfalls in knowledge about sentence processing. I will highlight some things that I think psycholinguistic methodologies can contribute to the understanding of developmental dyslexia. The editorial will then turn to a

Current concepts in adult aphasia.

This paper provides a review of recent research from the areas of speech and language pathology, cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, neurology, and rehabilitation medicine which is used to refine and extend current definitions of aphasia. Evidence is presented from these diverse disciplines, which supports a multimodality, performance-based, verbal and non-verbal, cortical and subcortical, and cognitively multidimensional view of aphasia. A summary of current practice in the assessment and treatment of adult aphasia is summarized.

Software and speech--a review of software in phonology therapy.

A review of software was carried out to evaluate to what extent particular titles could be used within a phonological therapy programme using a psycholinguistic approach for children aged between four and seven years. Some of the software had been developed specifically for speech and language therapists working with children's phonological impairments. Other titles were from the education market and aimed at developing children's literacy skills. This paper describes how these software programmes could be used to address phonological impairments through developing the sub-skills described wit

WINSTON'S DYSTHYMIA: UNDERSTANDING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CHILDHOOD TRAUMA, WORKPLACE STRAIN, AND COMMUNITY LACK OF EMPATHY IN CHRONIC DEPRESSION.

BACKGROUND: Characters in George Orwell's novel "1984" have certain behavioral features which may be taken as pathological. We hypothesized that Winston Smith in particular suffers from chronic mild depression, which is a result of external pressure from the fictional dystopian society (i.e., multimodal stress of childhood trauma, workplace strain, disrupted close relationships, emotional deprivation, feeling of loneliness, and unempathetic community). To confirm the hypothesis, we conducted a number of analyses of the English text of the novel "1984". SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Taking the full En

Lexical Access in Persian Speaking Children With and Without Specific Language Impairment.

INTRODUCTION: Word retrieval problems are among the limitations observed in children with specific language impairment during the initial schooling years. These restrictions are predictive of reading problems and poor performance at school. Additionally, studies on lexical access in Persian speaking children are scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate and compare naming accuracy and latency in children with and without specific language impairment. METHODS: Twenty 7-9-year-old children with specific language impairment and 20 age-matched peers were recruited as the study participan

From phonological therapy to phonological awareness.

Children with speech difficulties often have delayed phonological awareness development and associated literacy problems. Speech-language pathologists (S-LPs) typically use phonological and articulatory approaches in their treatment of such children. However, it is unclear to what extent phonological awareness training, originally designed to promote literacy skills, might also improve children's speech output. This article adopts a psycholinguistic approach to examine the nature and development of phonological awareness and to explore the relationship between phonological awareness training a

Issues contrasting adult acquired versus developmental apraxia of speech.

Acquired and developmental apraxia of speech (AOS and DAS) are defined as disorders of the transition from an abstract phonological code into motor commands. However, the natural course of these disorders differs substantially because of the fundamental difference in the developmental stage at which the apraxia expresses itself. In normal and pathological development alike, development of language and speech is an interactive process, involving speech motor control, perception, and psycholinguistic processes. Infant speech develops from random babbling and sensomotoric learning, followed by mo

The time course of visual word recognition as revealed by linear regression analysis of ERP data.

EEG correlates of a range of psycholinguistic word properties were used to investigate the time course of access to psycholinguistic information during visual word recognition. Neurophysiological responses recorded in a visual lexical decision task were submitted to linear regression analysis. First, 10 psycholinguistic features of each of 300 stimulus words were submitted to a principal component analysis, which yielded four orthogonal variables likely to reflect separable processes in visual word recognition: Word length, Letter n-gram frequency, Lexical frequency and Semantic coherence of a

The Detection of Early Reading Performance and Its Relationship with Biopsychosocial Risk Factors in the Study of Learning Difficulties.

The study of the multiple processes involved in learning how to read can contribute towards the early detection of good and bad readers. However, it is necessary to take into consideration different biopsychosocial risk factors (pre- and perigestational, neonatal, medical, developmental and family-related) that may have a significant impact on neurodevelopment, producing atypical cognitive development that could lead to the presence of reading difficulties. The objective of this study was to identify the main psycholinguistic abilities involved in the early reading performance and analyse thei

Lip-Reading: Advances and Unresolved Questions in a Key Communication Skill.

Lip-reading, i.e., the ability to recognize speech using only visual cues, plays a fundamental role in audio-visual speech processing, intelligibility, and comprehension. This capacity is integral to language development and functioning; it emerges in early development, and it slowly evolves. By linking psycholinguistics, psychophysics, and neurophysiology, the present narrative review explores the development and significance of lip-reading across different stages of life, highlighting its role in human communication in both typical and atypical development, e.g., in the presence of hearing o

A semantic strength and neural correlates in developmental dyslexia.

INTRODUCTION: Most studies of dyslexia focus on domains of impairment (e.g., reading and phonology, among others), but few examine possible strengths. In the present study, we investigated semantic fluency as a cognitive strength in English-speaking children with dyslexia aged 8-13. METHODS: Ninety-seven children with dyslexia completed tests of letter and semantic verbal fluency, standardized measures of reading and cognitive functions, and task-free resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). First, we adjusted performance on semantic fluency by letter fluency and created

Historical perspectives on dyslexia.

This article begins with an historical overview of the neurological aspects of dyslexia, which was originally seen as a member of the family of aphasias. That overview is followed by a brief review of familial and genetic factors in developmental dyslexia. The article then presents psycholinguistic models of dyslexia as they relate to the neurological concepts. Finally, the author reviews briefly the evolution of methods that have been successful in the remediation of dyslexia.

Development of the mandarin reading span test and confirmation of its relationship with speech perception in noise.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a dual-task Mandarin Reading Span Test (RST) to assess verbal working memory related to speech perception in noise. DESIGN: The test material was developed taking into account psycholinguistic factors (i.e. sentence structure, number of syllables, word familiarity, and sentences plausibility), to achieve good test reliability and face validity. The relationship between the 28-sentence Mandarin RST and speech perception in noise was confirmed using three speech perception in noise measures containing varying levels of contextual and linguistic information

Characterizing language production across modalities.

ABSTRACTThis study investigates factors influencing lexical access in language production across modalities (signed and oral). Data from deaf and hearing signers were reanalyzed (Baus and Costa, 2015, On the temporal dynamics of sign production: An ERP study in Catalan Sign Language (LSC). [Speech rehabilitation in aphasia in the concept of International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps (ICDH0)].

A neurogenic disorder of acquired speech, aphasia not only is a speech disorder but also implies restriction in communicative independence. In line with the WHO's principle of attending to the consequences of disease as well, speech rehabilitation has to deal not only with aphasia in terms of speech disorder (i.e., impairment) but also with aphasia in terms of communicative ability disorder (i.e., disability) as well as with aphasia in terms of psychosocial interference (i.e., handicap). Current speech therapy orientations can be assigned to these three dimensions and the need for these three

Sublexical compensatory reorganization of Chinese character recognition in Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the cognitive-functional shift in visual character recognition across the cognitive decline trajectory, ranging from healthy aging through Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to Mild Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Specifically, it was hypothesized that as global semantic networks degrade, the reliance on rapid holistic processing decreases, prompting a compensatory shift toward sublexical features. METHOD: Using a controlled unmasked priming lexical decision paradigm, this study evaluated behavioral performance across three distinct participant groups (N = 30 per gro

Detecting time-specific differences between temporal nonlinear curves: Analyzing data from the visual world paradigm.

In multiple fields of study, time series measured at high frequencies are used to estimate population curves that describe the temporal evolution of some characteristic of interest. These curves are typically nonlinear, and the deviations of each series from the corresponding curve are highly autocorrelated. In this scenario, we propose a procedure to compare the response curves for different groups at specific points in time. The method involves fitting the curves, performing potentially hundreds of serially correlated tests, and appropriately adjusting the overall alpha level of the tests. O

[Speech therapy for children with cleft lips and palates. I. Basic linguistic considerations].

According to several basic principals of hermeneutic theory (theory of understanding natural languages) we describe the major fields of language acquisition in which anomalies of CPL children often can be found. Besides phonation and articulation there are morphological, psychomotoric, onomatopoetic, and isotopic disorders. Also a delay of understanding by listening is often observed. Additionally some cofactors in psychodynamics of the family have to be respected. Defense mechanisms, somatization, and social symptomatization are described. Some examples from statistics and experimental psycho
