Volunteering and resilience in wartime: evidence from two population-based studies in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Resilience is a key factor in coping with and recovering from large-scale traumatic events. Although volunteering has generally been associated with improving or maintaining resilience, evidence from wartime contexts is mixed. This study examined the association between volunteering during armed conflict and individual resilience. METHODS: We used data from two population-based studies, conducted within six weeks (Study 1, n = 453) and 6 months after (Study 2, n = 1035) the October 7th, 2023 terror attacks and onset of the ensuing war in Israel. In Study 1, multivariable linear re

The psychological effects of ionizing radiation.

This paper presents a case study of eleven men who were exposed to non-background ionizing radiation as active participants in the United States' atmospheric nuclear tests. Each of the subjects has developed a virtually identical complex of debilitating psychiatric symptoms. The content of these symptoms is almost entirely focused upon the health effects of the radiation to which each of the subjects was exposed. This symptom complex appears to comprise a syndrome. The symptom structure and course of this syndrome suggests three hypotheses: The syndrome appears to be a pathological development

"Forward psychiatry" in the military: its origins and effectiveness.

"Forward psychiatry" was devised in World War I for the treatment of shell shock and today is the standard intervention for combat stress reaction. It relied on three principles: proximity to battle, immediacy, and expectation of recovery, subsequently given the acronym "PIE." Both US and UK forces belatedly reintroduced PIE methods during World War II to return servicemen to active duty and made confident claims for its efficacy. Advanced treatment units also appeared to have minimized psychiatric battle casualties during Korean and Vietnamese Wars. Evaluations of its use by Israeli forces in

Social-psychological dilemmas and coping of atomic veterans.

Memories and perceptions of exposure to radiation were explored in open-ended interviews with 16 atomic veterans. Findings suggest that resolution of these events involves emotional and cognitive processing of a new perspective that is in contradiction with prior beliefs.

Neurologists and the threat of bioterrorism.

Neurologists are most likely to become involved in primarily diagnosing those bioterrorist attacks utilising botulinum toxin. Oral ingestion, or possibly inhalation, are likely routes of delivery. The characteristic descending paralysis starts in the extraocular and bulbar muscles, with associated autonomic features. Repetitive nerve stimulation usually shows an incremental muscle response. Treatment is supportive. The differential diagnosis is from naturally occurring paralysing illnesses such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, myasthenic crisis or diphtheria, from paralysing seafood neurotoxins (te

Associations over time between wartime deployment, parental burnout and child adjustment.

Military deployment places significant stress on families, yet little is known about its effects in contexts where both deployed and non-deployed family members face ongoing threat. This longitudinal study, conducted during the first seven months of the Israel-Hamas War, investigated how spousal deployment interacts with parental burnout and child emotional and behavioral problems, and whether parental burnout moderates this relationship. The study included 123 Israeli mothers (Mean age = 39.11, SD = 6.10) of children aged 5-18 years (Mean age = 8.47, SD = 3.32), 35 of whom had partners deploy

"When stress is the air we breathe": Contextual resilience sustains clinical excellence in nursing students amid chronic adversity - A cross-sectional study from war- and sanction-affected Southern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Dominant models assume chronic stress impairs clinical performance, yet students in crisis-endemic regions often maintain high standards despite persistent adversity. This raises a question: might stress become a normalized backdrop, enabling rather than eroding excellence? OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between academic stress and clinical performance among nursing students in war-, sanction-, and dust storm-affected Abadan, Iran, and to interpret findings through the lens of contextual resilience. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study (ethics code: IR.ABADANUMS.REC.1403.1

Trauma, resiliency and recovery in children: lessons from the field.

War atrocities, natural disasters, community violence, physical abuse and catastrophic illnesses are many faces of trauma and are endemic and the children are the most vulnerable victims. Since 1994, this author has visited war zones and disaster areas 80 times in 18 different countries and has collected data on children's reactions across cultures. Most children around the world show similar responses to the exposure to traumatic experience. Sleep disturbance, nightmares, flashbacks and re-enactment of traumatic events are common. Most children recover from these symptoms in couple of weeks d

First Psychological Aid for Families During War: Integrating the Narrative Approach With Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).

The article describes a first psychological support project for families living in the seam zone between Israel and areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority. Since October 7th, the proximity to the border and potential of terrorist infiltration into communities have generated heightened anxiety among residents, alongside concern for family members enlisted to reserve duty or on mandatory service. Therefore, the Family Therapy Unit of Menashe Regional Council initiated a psychological support program designed to strengthen families' resources and enhance their ability to cope with the ongo

Spine-area pain in military personnel: a review of epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Nonbattle illnesses and injuries are the major causes of unit attrition in modern warfare. Spine-area pain is a common disabling injury in service members associated with a very low return-to-duty (RTD) rate. PURPOSE: To provide an overview of the current understanding of epidemiology, possible causes, and relative prognosis of spine-area pain syndromes in military personnel, including a discussion of various treatment options available in theaters of operation. STUDY DESIGN: Literature review. METHODS: Search focusing on epidemiology, etiology and associative factors, a

Health status of Persian Gulf War veterans: self-reported symptoms, environmental exposures and the effect of stress.

BACKGROUND: Most US troops returned home from the Persian Gulf War (PGW) by Spring 1991 and many began reporting increased health symptoms and medical problems soon after. This investigation examines the relationships between several Gulf-service environmental exposures and health symptom reporting, and the role of traumatic psychological stress on the exposure-health symptom relationships. METHODS: Stratified, random samples of two cohorts of PGW veterans, from the New England area (n = 220) and from the New Orleans area (n = 71), were selected from larger cohorts being followed longitudinal

Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor, dapagliflozin, reverses depressive-like behavior in a mouse model of post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological condition characterized by consistent psychological distress resulting from the experience of intense traumatic events, such as warfare or natural disasters. Benzodiazepines and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are widely prescribed treatments for PTSD, but their adverse side effects are a significant concern and they have only limited efficacy as a symptomatic treatment for PTSD. Moreover, they have no effect on the core underlying causes of PTSD Studies have reported a potential neuroprotective effect for Sod

[The impact of war and armed conflict on maternal, neonatal, and healthcare utilization outcomes].

Armed conflict imposes profound psychological stress and disrupts healthcare systems, placing pregnant women and newborns at particular risk. This review summarizes current evidence regarding the impact of war on maternal and neonatal outcomes, as well as healthcare utilization. Published national cohort studies demonstrate associations between war exposure and increased rates of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, postpartum hemorrhage, and gestational diabetes. Patterns of healthcare utilization shift markedly during wartime, manifesting as redu

Mental health among commando, airborne and other UK infantry personnel.

BACKGROUND: Despite having high levels of combat exposure, commando and airborne forces may be at less risk of mental ill-health than other troops. AIMS: To examine differences in mental health outcomes and occupational risk factors between Royal Marines Commandos (RMCs), paratroopers (PARAs) and other army infantry (INF). METHODS: Three groups of personnel (275 RMCs, 202 PARAs and 572 INF) were generated from a UK military cohort study of personnel serving at the time of the 2003 Iraq war. Participants completed a questionnaire about their mental health and experiences on deployment. Differ

Punishment sustains large-scale cooperation in prestate warfare.

Understanding cooperation and punishment in small-scale societies is crucial for explaining the origins of human cooperation. We studied warfare among the Turkana, a politically uncentralized, egalitarian, nomadic pastoral society in East Africa. Based on a representative sample of 88 recent raids, we show that the Turkana sustain costly cooperation in combat at a remarkably large scale, at least in part, through punishment of free-riders. Raiding parties comprised several hundred warriors and participants are not kin or day-to-day interactants. Warriors incur substantial risk of death and pro
