Effects of alcohol on psychomotor performance and perceived impairment in heavy binge social drinkers.

Alcohol intoxication often results in negative consequences; however, specific behavioral and subjective effects vary as a function of individual differences. The present study utilized an alcohol challenge paradigm to examine whether heavy binge social drinkers (HD; n=77), compared to light social drinkers (LD; n=55), exhibit: (1) greater tolerance in psychomotor task performance under the influence of alcohol, and (2) differential perceptions of the impairing effects of alcohol. The study included three test sessions in which participants consumed either a low (0.4 g/kg) or a high (0.8 g/kg)

Saccadic eye movement analysis as a measure of drug effects on human psychomotor performance.

Analysis of human horizontal saccadic eye movements can provide measurements of central nervous system depression and stimulation. Effects on saccadic eye movements have been observed in normal volunteers with barbiturates, benzodiazepines, opiates and related compounds, carbamazepine, amphetamine and ethanol. A suite of programmes have been developed to allow the generation, collection and analysis of saccadic eye movements using a CBM 3032, 8032 or BBC B microcomputer. The system allows almost continuous sampling and rapid analysis of movements.

Investigating Transfer of Input Device Practice on Psychomotor Performance in an Aviation Selection Test.

ObjectiveWe explored transfer of learning from brief practice with different input devices in the Navy's Performance Based Measures Battery (PBM), a psychomotor subset of the Aviation Selection Test Battery (ASTB).BackgroundThe PBM is a set of computerized tests used as a part of the ASTB to select aviators in the U.S. military. Official practice is not available, leading candidates to practice with unofficial re-creations and with or without access to the stick and throttle used on the PBM.MethodOur between-subjects study with 152 cadets from the U.S. Military Academy evaluated the impact of

Acute and subchronic effects of levocetirizine and diphenhydramine on memory functioning, psychomotor performance, and mood.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system adverse effects, such as sedation, often accompany the use of first-generation antihistamines. These effects might interfere with memory functioning and psychomotor performance. Levocetirizine was recently introduced as a new antihistamine said to be free from sedative effects. OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the effects of levocetirizine (5 mg), diphenhydramine (50 mg), and placebo on memory and psychomotor performance after acute (day 1) and subchronic (day 4) daily administration in 48 healthy volunteers (24 men and 24 women). METHODS: This study was

Caffeine moderately antagonizes the effects of triazolam and zopiclone on the psychomotor performance of healthy subjects.

To determine whether caffeine antagonizes the decremental effects of triazolam and zopiclone on human performance, oral single doses of 0.250 mg triazolam, 7.5 mg zopiclone, or respective placebos, with and without 300 mg caffeine, were given to parallel groups of student volunteers in two double-blind studies. Objective tests and subjective visual analogue ratings were done at baseline and 30 min. and 90 min. after the intake. In Study I, triazolam produced drowsiness at 30 min. but did not differ from the placebo in other tests. Caffeine induced alerting effects in various tests and differed

Comparative effects of zopiclone, triazolam and placebo on memory and psychomotor performance in healthy volunteers.

This study evaluated the effects of acute doses of zopiclone (7.5 mg), triazolam (0.25 mg) and placebo on memory and psychomotor performance of 12 normal volunteers. The subjects received both drugs in a repeated measure, double-blind Latin square design. The tests (CFF, CRT, DSST, memory assessments) were performed before and 2 and 6 hr after treatment. Zopiclone and triazolam induced an anterograde amnesia affecting short-term and long-term memory which lasted less than 6 hr. No retrograde amnesia was observed. Two hr after drug intake of both hypnotics psychomotor performances were signific

Sensorimotor network hyperactivity and impaired psychomotor performance associated with cumulative occupational stress in firefighters.

Firefighters face chronic occupational stressors including trauma exposure, sleep disruption, and substantial physical demands that can compromise brain function and cognition. Despite increasing concern regarding stress-related cognitive decline in this population, limited evidence is available on whether occupational stress is associated with alterations in resting-state networks (RSNs) or whether such neural changes relate to cognitive outcomes. This study investigated occupational stress-related alterations in functional connectivity (FC) across major RSNs and examined their associations w

[Cognitive and psychomotor performance following isoflurane, midazolam/alfentanil and propofol anesthesia. A comparative study].

Mental and psychomotor abilities are impaired to varying degrees after general anaesthesia. This has important implications for the time over which patients are monitored in the recovery room and for the discharge of outpatients after day surgery. The present study was undertaken to compare recovery and mental and psychomotor skills in the first 60 min following general anaesthesia with isoflurane, midazolam/alfentanil and propofol. METHODS. A total of 45 patients undergoing microsurgical lumbar nucleotomy were randomized to three study groups. Group 1 (n = 15): anaesthesia was induced with th

Acute effects of two dosages of orally administered midazolam on psychomotor performance in healthy volunteers.

The acute effects of two doses of orally administered midazolam (Dormicum, 10 and 30 mg) which as a putative anaesthetic premedicant is clinically expected to provide valid effects already after acute dosing on sedation parameters, were evaluated vs placebo within a randomized double-blind 3-period crossover design in 12 healthy male volunteers. The washout period was 7 days. Objective sedation measures were obtained with the oculodynamic test (ODT), which is a multidimensional computerized psychological testing device. Cardiorespiratory parameters were simultaneously sampled throughout the OD

Effect of transcranial direct current stimulation on the psychomotor, cognitive, and motor performances of power athletes.

In sports science, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has many unknown effects on neuromuscular, psychomotor and cognitive aspects. Particularly, its impact on power performances remains poorly investigated. Eighteen healthy young males, all trained in a jumping sport (parkour) performed three experimental sessions: anodal tDCS applied either on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC, cathode in supraorbital area) or on the primary motor cortex (M1, cathode on contralateral shoulder), and a placebo condition (SHAM), each applied for 20 min at 2 mA. Systematic review of the quality and generalizability of studies on the effects of opioids on driving and cognitive/psychomotor performance.

INTRODUCTION: The effect of opioids on driving performance has been much debated. Driving is a complex task requiring integration of psychomotor, cognitive, motor and decision-making skills, visual-spatial abilities, divided attention, and behavioral and emotional control. The objective of this systematic review was to assess the quality of studies and to revisit the concept that patients on stable opioids are safe to drive as it applies to everyday practice. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, PSYCinfo, CENTRAL, TRANSPORT, CINAHL, reference lists of retrieved articles and narrative reviews

Initial and steady-state effects of diphenhydramine and loratadine on sedation, cognition, mood, and psychomotor performance.

BACKGROUND: The classic, first-generation histamine1-receptor antagonists used to treat allergic disorders frequently cause sedation. In contrast, sedation is reduced or absent after administration of recommended doses of second-generation histamine1-receptor antagonists. We measured the initial and steady-state effects of diphenhydramine, a first-generation antihistamine, and loratadine, a second-generation antihistamine, by means of a comprehensive battery of psychometric tests that mirror real-world tasks. METHODS: Healthy volunteers (N = 98) were randomly assigned in a double-blind fashio

Polygenic risk for schizophrenia is associated with psychomotor vigilance performance impairment during sleep deprivation in women.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a highly heritable psychiatric disorder with gender-specific etiology profiles. SZ may involve altered synaptic plasticity, as supported by genetic studies, and individuals with elevated polygenetic risk may show prodromal characteristics such as increased sensitivity to sleep deprivation. We examined whether polygenic risk for SZ is associated with vulnerability to sleep deprivation-induced psychomotor vigilance impairment in healthy young adults. A total of 120 healthy non-Hispanic Caucasian volunteers (62 women, 58 men; aged 20-40 years) participated in one of six in-l

Residual next-day effects of alprazolam on psychomotor performance and simulated driving in healthy normal adults.

The prevalence of drugged driving has increased in the United States. Some drugged driving may be unintentional as prescription medications used as sleeping aids, like zolpidem, cause impairment after the predicted duration of therapeutic action has elapsed. The aim of this study was to determine if nighttime administration of alprazolam, a drug commonly prescribed off-label as a sleeping aid, impacts driving performance the following day. Participants were healthy adults (n = 15) who completed a double-blind, double-dummy, within-subjects inpatient study examining the effects of nighttime adm
