Psilocybin as a psychophysical adaptogen in chronic pain rehabilitation.

Those living with chronic pain and comorbid functional disabilities are often confronted by a physically and emotionally transformative experience, impacting their identity and ability to derive meaning in life. Despite the use of various pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments to moderate symptoms, the degree of analgesia and functional recovery are far from optimal. Psychological disorders including depression and anxiety, and maladaptive cognitive-affective states such as pain catastrophizing and fear of movement collectively impact participant engagement with rehabilitation serv

An Alternative Psychophysical Diagnostic Indicator of the Aging Eye.

PURPOSE: Impaired adaptation to changes in lighting levels as well as mesopic visual function is a common complaint in those over the age of 65. The use of photostress is a well-established method to test the adaption rate and the response of the visual cycle. In this study, we test visual function recovery to mesopic luminance stimuli following a long duration photostress in young and elderly subjects. If successful in strongly differentiating aging macular function, these methods may also be useful in the study of pathologies such as age-related macular degeneration. METHODS: A group of 12

The pleasurability of scratching an itch: a psychophysical and topographical assessment.

BACKGROUND: Scratching an itch is perceived as being pleasurable. However, an analysis of topographical variations in itch intensity, the effectiveness of scratching to provide itch relief and the associated pleasurability has not been performed at different body sites. OBJECTIVES: To examine the role of scratching pleasurability in providing itch relief by investigating whether itch intensity is perceived differently at three different sites and to assess a potential correlation between the pleasurability and itch attenuation induced by scratching. METHODS: Itch was induced on the forearm,

Pattern ERG and psychophysical functions in Best's disease.

The aim of the study was to asses the neurosensory retinal function in 12 patients (24 eyes) with different stages of Best's disease, by determining how pattern and full field flash ERG responses were related to visual acuity, stage of disease and extent of visual field loss. All patients had typically abnormal EOG responses and normal full field-flash ERG responses. Patients were stratified in two groups according to visual acuity. In the first group 12 eyes with visual acuity better than 0.5, all amplitudes and latencies of PERG P50 and N95 responses were in the normal range. Small central s

Motor and sensory fusion in monkeys: psychophysical measurements.

Motor and sensory fusion, the basic processes of binocularity, must be present for bifoveal fixation with true fusion and stereopsis during ordinary viewing. The characteristics of motor and sensory fusion have been established for patients with normal and subnormal binocular vision; the present report describes our psychophysical studies of these processes in the macaque monkey. Three recent investigations of motor and sensory fusion in monkeys are described. The studies involved: (1) the comparability of motor and sensory fusion in monkeys and humans with normal binocular vision, (2) the eff

Visual function in hypermetropia. An electroretinographic and psychophysical study.

Dark-adapted retinal function was tested electroretinographically and psychophsysically in patients with severe hypermetropia. These patients were first tested in 1982 and were classified into three electroretinographic categories subnormal, normal and supernormal, according to the amplitudes and the b-wave to a-wave relationships of their dark-adapted electroretinographic responses. These patients were invited for a follow-up examination to examine whether the subnormal electroretinogram represented a stationary or a progressive syndrome, to correlate functional vision to the electroretinogra

Methyl salicylate as a cutaneous stimulus: a psychophysical analysis.

Two experiments were performed to examine the perceptual effects of methyl salicylate on hairy skin in humans. In the first experiment, the sensitivity to methyl salicylate (prepared in an ethanol and water vehicle and applied via filter paper) was measured in a paradigm that required subjects to report both the perceived intensity and the perceptual quality of the sensations they experienced. The results indicated that methyl salicylate could be reliably detected at concentrations between 3 and 12%. Peak perceived intensities increased with increasing concentration, and the dominant sensation

Level effects in psychophysical two-tone suppression.

Measurements of psychophysical two-tone suppression in a number of subjects are described. Levels of the stimulus components (suppressee, L1, and suppressor, L2) were the primary experimental variables. In all experiments the pulsation threshold was used with the probe frequency fr fixed at the suppressee frequency f1. In an initial experiment f1 was fixed at 1 kHz. The suppressor frequency f2 ranged from 0.2 to 1.4 kHz. At appropriate levels all subjects showed significant suppression. Suppression was found to decrease to zero as f2 approached f1. The amount of suppression depended on both L1

Psychophysical Evaluation of A Mechanotactile Haptic Feedback Device.

Sensory feedback enhances the intuitive operation of upper limb prostheses. However, most modern commercial prosthetic devices lack sensory feedback mechanisms due to the difficulty of integration and added complexity. Mechanotactile haptic feedback provides a non-invasive and low-cost alternative to traditional electromechanical haptic feedback modalities. While mechanotactile haptic feedback systems have been studied for their mechanical behaviour, their practical integration in prosthetic devices and associated human factors still remain to be investigated. Therefore, in this paper, we perf

A Psychophysical Window onto the Subjective Experience of Compulsion.

In this perspective, we follow the idea that an integration of cognitive models with sensorimotor theories of compulsion is required to understand the subjective experience of compulsive action. We argue that cognitive biases in obsessive-compulsive disorder may obscure an altered momentary, pre-reflective experience of sensorimotor control, whose detection thus requires an implicit experimental operationalization. We propose that a classic psychophysical test exists that provides this implicit operationalization, i.e., the intentional binding paradigm. We show how intentional binding can pit

Itch relief by mirror scratching. A psychophysical study.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to test whether central mechanisms of scratching-induced itch attenuation can be activated by scratching the limb contralateral to the itching limb when the participant is made to visually perceive the non-itching limb as the itching limb by means of mirror images. METHODS: Healthy participants were asked to assess the intensity of an experimentally induced itch at their right forearm while they observed externally guided scratch movements either at their right (itching) or left (non-itching) forearm which were either mirrored or not mirrored. Psychophysical parameters of a multidimensional pain scale in newborns.

The Premature Infant Pain Profile (PIPP) is a promising multidimensional tool for comparison and testing of new technologies in newborn pain assessment studies since it may adhere to basic psychophysical parameters of intensity, direction, reactivity, regulation and slope described in analyses of physiological pain indicators. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether these psychophysical parameters can be achieved using the PIPP in acute pain assessment. Thirty-six healthy term newborn infants were conveniently sampled whilst being videotaped before, during and after heel prick blood samp

Psychophysical correlates in adults with sensory modulation disorder.

PURPOSE: Individuals with sensory modulation disorder (SMD) demonstrate abnormal responses to naturally occurring stimuli in a manner that interferes with daily life activities. This study is the first study applying quantitative sensory testing to characterize the somatosensory sensitivity of adults with SMD. METHOD: One hundred and fifty one adults (68 males and 83 females) were tested comparing 91 SMD to 60 SMD-free, control individuals. Group placement (SMD vs. SMD-free) was determined using the Sensory Responsiveness Questionnaire (SRQ). Sensory detection thresholds for skin warming, coo

ERGs and psychophysical thresholds in students with reading discomfort.

PURPOSE: Symptoms of reading discomfort include unpleasant somatic and perceptual effects, such as eye-strain, headache, and blurred text, despite normal visual acuity. Reading discomfort has been proposed to be the result of increased noise in the visual system. Several studies have suggested that the symptoms can be minimized by having the subject wear colored filters. Thus, there may be abnormal neural processing in the cone pathways. This study measured L- and M-cone isolating (1) ERGs and (2) psychophysical thresholds in normal and reading discomfort subjects to determine if cone processi

Psychophysical and neurochemical abnormalities of pain processing in fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia pain is frequent in the general population, but its pathogenesis is only partially understood. Patients with fibromyalgia lack consistent tissue abnormalities but display features of hyperalgesia (increased sensitivity to painful stimuli) and allodynia (lowered pain threshold). Many recent fibromyalgia studies have demonstrated central nervous system (CNS) pain processing abnormalities, including abnormal temporal summation of pain. In the CNS, persistent nociceptive input from peripheral tissues can lead to neuroplastic changes resulting in central sensitization and pain. This me

[Methods of preliminary evaluation of psychophysical skills of drivers].

Drug and medication use-associated impairment of driving skills is increasingly becoming a serious problem. Detecting such DUI drivers is very difficult due to the diversity of drugs that affect the central nervous system (CNS), or to the possibility of using several drugs simultaneously. In practice there are numerous different simple tests, which do not require special equipment and can be used for preliminary detection of persons, who are suspected of taking drugs causing impairment of driving skills. In order to popularize the knowledge on the subject of testing drivers for drug use, the a

A psychophysical investigation of ocular expansion in human eyes.

PURPOSE: To investigate spatial anisotropies in the peripheral visual field of axially myopic eyes, in an attempt to distinguish between models of isotropic and anisotropic ocular stretching. METHODS: Stimuli consisted of two high-contrast Gaussian patches presented in one of four orientations (90 degrees, 180 degrees, 45 degrees, or 135 degrees). For each orientation, perceived separation was established relative to that for all other orientations. The experiment was conducted with central fixation and at 15 degrees in the nasal and inferior visual fields. Eleven myopes and nine emmetropes p

Psychophysical suppression effects for tonal and speech signals.

This experiment assessed the benefits of suppression and the impact of reduced or absent suppression on speech recognition in noise. Psychophysical suppression was measured in forward masking using tonal maskers and suppressors and band limited noise maskers and suppressors. Subjects were 10 younger and 10 older adults with normal hearing, and 10 older adults with cochlear hearing loss. For younger subjects with normal hearing, suppression measured with noise maskers increased with masker level and was larger at 2.0 kHz than at 0.8 kHz. Less suppression was observed for older than younger subj
