Rural-urban disparities in psychosocial functioning in epithelial ovarian cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: Although rural residence has been related to health disparities in cancer patients, little is known about how rural residence impacts mental health and quality of life (QOL) in ovarian cancer patients over time. This prospective longitudinal study investigated mental health and QOL of ovarian cancer patients in the first-year post-diagnosis. METHOD: Women with suspected ovarian cancer completed psychosocial surveys pre-surgery, at 6 months and one-year; clinical data were obtained from medical records. Histologically confirmed high grade epithelial ovarian cancer patients were elig

Financial stress response profiles and psychosocial functioning in low-income parents.

Parenting in the context of poverty is accompanied by heightened stress and heightened stakes. How parents respond to poverty-related stress has important implications for family functioning, but research investigating individual differences in low-income mothers' and fathers' responses to financial stress and their associations with parents' concurrent psychosocial adaptation is lacking. A better understanding of differences in stress responses among low-income parents is required to develop and tailor prevention programs that meet these families' needs. This study applies latent profile anal

Psychosocial functioning in pediatric patients with pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum are the most commonly seen anterior chest wall deformities. Recent studies reveal that minimal invasive repair of pectus deformities improves the quality of life. Our aim is to assess the psychosocial functioning and sociodemographic characteristics of pediatric patients with pectus deformities and evaluate the differences between patients operated on with minimal invasive repair techniques and nonoperated patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients with pectus deformities who were operated on 6 months or more before and 31 nonope

Sleep impairment, mood symptoms, and psychosocial functioning in adolescent bipolar disorder.

Few empirical studies have investigated the role of sleep impairment in the course of adolescent bipolar spectrum disorders (BSD). The present study examined the longitudinal associations between sleep disruption, mood symptom severity, and psychosocial functioning in a 2-year follow-up of patients with adolescent BSD. Fifty-three adolescents with BSD (mean [S.D.] age: 14.6 [1.6]) participated in a two-site randomized trial of family focused treatment for adolescents (FFT-A) or enhanced care, a briefer psychoeducational treatment; both treatments were administered with pharmacotherapy. The relation between mood, cognition and psychosocial functioning in psychiatric disorders.

Impairments in cognitive performance and inability to function in everyday life situations are present, in various degrees, in many severe mental illnesses, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Persistent mood symptoms (e.g., depression and mania) are associated with functional deficits in major depression and bipolar disorder, but also in conditions where mood symptoms are not the primary markers of the illness, such as in schizophrenia. While mood symptoms impact cognitive performance, both mood symptoms and cognitive deficits have a significant - and to

Psychosocial functioning in children and adolescents with gastrointestinal complaints and disorders.

The current study examined the prevalence and presentation of psychosocial symptoms in pediatric patients and their parents presenting for first time appointments at a gastroenterology (GI) clinic compared to healthy controls (HC). One hundred GI patients, aged 8-17 years, and their mothers were compared to 100 age- and gender-matched HC on measures of child and parental behavioral/psychosocial functioning, depression, and anxiety. Results revealed significant correlations between mother- and child-reported internalizing behaviors and psychological symptoms. Significant group differences were

Factors accounting for psychosocial functioning in patients with low back pain.

Low back pain (LBP) is a chronic disorder which exerts a profound impact on various spheres of psychosocial functioning, including emotional distress, functional limitations and decrements in social contacts. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between the indices of psychosocial functioning in patients with chronic LBP and a range of psychological factors. Specifically, the study aimed at exploring the relative participation of personality, social support, disease-related cognitive appraisals and coping styles in accounting for the differences in psychosocial funct

Optimism, social support and psychosocial functioning among women with breast cancer.

Personality, psychosocial, demographic and medical variables have been identified as correlates of adjustment to breast cancer and quality of life (QoL). Most studies have examined relationships between personality, social support and adjustment to cancer in predominantly middle-class Caucasian samples, thus limiting the generalizability of their findings. Eighty-one female outpatients at a medical oncology breast clinic in a county general hospital serving primarily indigent Hispanic and African-American patients completed measures assessing demographic and medical information, health-related

Cognitive and psychosocial functioning of patients with congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.

Mental retardation (MR) is generally considered one of the main complications of congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI). However, psychometric studies of NDI patients are scarce and outdated. In the present study, 17 male NDI patients underwent psychological evaluation. Total intelligence quotient of 14 patients was within (n = 13) or above (n = 1) the normal range, 1 patient had an intelligence score between -1 and -2 standard deviations (S.D.) and 2 young patients had a general cognitive index more than 2 S.D. below the norm. Body experiences, emotional competence, and psychosocial functioning in juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

We investigated self-image, psychological functioning, and quality of life in children and adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Thirty-nine children with JIA were compared with 80 healthy peers. We first administered the Human Figure Drawing Test (HFDT) to all subjects; children also completed standardized questionnaires evaluating health-related quality of life (PEDSQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales) and the main aspects of psychological functioning: anxiety (SAFA-A) and depression (CDI). Parents were asked to complete the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) and the PEDSQL 4.0. For eac
