BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: More people are living alone across the life course: in later life this can have implications for practical and psychosocial support. The Covid pandemic emphasised the importance of this when the UK government restricted movement outside of households to limit the spread of disease. This had important ramifications regarding social contact and practical support. The objectives of this study were to explore the experience of older women living alone during this time, with a focus on health and wellbeing.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This study used an Interpretative

OBJECTIVES: Sexual abuse is a strong predictor of future psychiatric problems. A more nuanced qualitative understanding of mental health outcomes, in the context of interpersonal responses from family members towards survivors after sexual abuse, may help to better inform prevention and interventions.
DESIGN: A mixed-methods approach included a qualitative timeline method to map and identify contextual factors and mediating emotional responses associated with mental disorder following sexual abuse.
SETTING: Participants were adult survivors of sexual abuse, seeking support from the Sexual As

The pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and natural history of acute pain in sickle cell disease are unique and require a disease-centered approach that also applies general principles of acute and chronic pain management. The majority of acute pain episodes are managed at home without the need to access health care. The long-term consequences of poorly treated acute pain include chronic pain, adverse effects of chronic opioid usage, psychological maladjustment, poor quality of life, and excessive health care utilization. There is no standard protocol for management of an acute pain crisis

Recent studies show that people who live in a fear-based existence from childhood change not only psychologically or spiritually, but even biologically. This essay relates the story of a family in the Emergency Room at a children's hospital. Over a few days, this family affects everyone they encounter. The staff witness a family trapped in a web of poverty, abuse, and generationally destructive behavior, and they wonder about the overtaxed support structures that not only fail to serve, but that may well promise additional tragic generations to come.

Many adolescents and young adult (AYAs) childhood cancer survivors face disease- or therapy-related late-effects, which limit their participation in various areas of daily life. AYAs are often left alone in our health care system, and many worry about their ability to cope with long-term sequelae, and some are even lost to follow-up. Therefore, in the present study, a targeted aftercare program was developed and evaluated with the goal of facilitating three important "life skills": (1) self-perception, (2) social interaction and conflict management, and (3) self-conscious communication of supp

BACKGROUND: This article draws on the evaluation of the pilot Drug Recovery Wings (DRWs), which were introduced ten prisons in England and Wales, with the intention of delivering abstinence-focused drug recovery services. The DRW pilots can be seen as representing the extension of the recovery paradigm - so prevalent elsewhere in UK drug policy - to the prison system. This study aimed to provide a detailed account of DRW prisoners' expectations and experiences in the transition from prison to the community and explore the potential for 'doing recovery' in prison and on release.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dementia is accompanied by increasing need for support in activities of daily living (ADLs). This brief report/literature review summarizes the practices to care for early stage, middle stage, and late stage ADL needs (dressing, toileting, and eating/nutrition), and examines commonalities across ADL needs and the extent to which practices are reflected in guidelines and/or evidence.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A review of the grey and peer-reviewed literature, using some but not all procedures of a systematic review. Key terms were identified for ADLs overall and f

Survival for children with congenital heart disease (CHD) has improved substantially because of advances in surgery, intensive care, imaging, and interventional cardiology. As congenital cardiology evolves into a lifespan discipline, healthcare systems must also address neurodevelopmental vulnerability, psychosocial adaptation, educational disruption, transition complexity, and chronic multisystem disease in adulthood. Although developmental and systems-oriented models of care are emerging, practical guidance for implementation within routine congenital cardiology programs remains limited. Thi

OBJECTIVE: Palliative care (PC) patients and families have diverse psychosocial needs. Support in this context is multidimensional. A tiered support framework could enable PC professionals to address these needs effectively. This study presents part of a research initiative to develop and evaluate a tiered model of psychosocial support in PC for adult patients. The current phase of the project focuses on enhancing the preliminary model in cancer care. The objective was to assess how PC patients and professionals would develop the applicability of the framework.
METHODS: A qualitative study us

BACKGROUND: The church and other religious-affiliated organizations have promising yet underexplored potential to provide social support services for young people recovering from substance abuse in communities where drug and substance rehabilitation services are limited. This study aimed to establish the barriers and facilitators of accessing psychosocial support, the role of the church, and strategies to promote access to psychosocial support for youths recovering from drug and substance abuse.
METHODS: This was a qualitative cross-sectional study, and semi-structured interviews of 18 church

Objective: To evaluate whether a blended (face-to-face and online) psychosocial support program for caregivers of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Progressive Muscular Atrophy (PMA), aimed at enhancing feeling of control over caregiving, reduces psychological distress. Methods: A randomized controlled trial using a wait-list control design was conducted. Caregiver-patient dyads were randomly assigned to either the support program (n = 74) or to a wait-list control group (n = 74). The support program, based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, consists of 1 face-to-face co

OBJECTIVES: Recovery is a process through which people experiencing mental illness learn to live with their disorder and reach social insertion and citizenship. This positive approach focuses on a person's competencies and strengths rather than on the symptoms. Within this philosophy, peer support has been unevenly developing in mental health services worldwide with roots in the South-American social programs for homeless people and in the American recovery circles in the field of addiction. Therapeutic efficiency of peer support has been proven by several studies including a control group, as

BACKGROUND: Supporting psychosocial well-being in aphasia is necessarily person-centred, interdisciplinary and coordinated. Shortcomings in such support are described in Ireland and elsewhere. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) are integral; and describing current practice and barriers they experience is important for enhancing service delivery.
AIMS: To understand how SLTs enact, and are supported to enact, aphasia psychosocial care in Ireland.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: This is a cross-sectional, online, self-administered clinician survey targeting SLTs working minimally 1 year post-qualific

Adolescents (10 to 19 years) living with HIV (ALHIV) experience disproportionately poor adherence to antiretroviral treatment (ART) compared to other age groups. Several barriers, including psychosocial challenges, contribute to this observation. Psychosocial support (PSS) interventions show promising results as a strategy to deal with the biological and psychosocial challenges faced by ALHIV. However, there is dearth of information on how psychosocial support interventions designed to improve treatment adherence and retention in care among ALHIV are effective. In this commentary, we used the

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, millions of people with advanced cancer and their family caregivers are experiencing physical and psychological distress. Psychosocial support and education can reduce distress and prevent avoidable healthcare resource use. To date, we lack knowledge from large-scale studies on which interventions generate positive outcomes for people with cancer and their informal caregivers' quality of life. This protocol describes the DIAdIC study that will evaluate the effectiveness of two psychosocial and educational interventions aimed at improving patient-family caregiver dyads' e

BACKGROUND: To date, no document comprehensively focused on the complex issue of the rehabilitation of chronic venous diseases of the lower limbs.
METHOD: This article overviews and summarizes current strategies concerning venous rehabilitation of lower limbs.
RESULTS: Venous rehabilitation is based on four main strategies: (1) lifestyle adaptations and occupational therapies; (2) physical therapies; (3) adapted physical activities; (4) psychological and social support. Rehabilitative protocols must be tailored to the specific needs of each patient, depending on the severity of chronic venou

AIM: This study described end-of-life care for children affected by spinal muscular atrophy type 1 (SMA1), which is characterised by progressive muscle weakness and develops in the first six months of life.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 17 children (13 boys) who attended the University of Padua's paediatric palliative care centre in Italy from March 2000 to March 2015. All the children received supportive care without proactive respiratory intervention to prolong survival.
RESULTS: The median age at admission was 3.57 months, and the median age at death was 6.80 months. The most frequ

BACKGROUND: The transition out of inpatient mental health is a crucial time for adults experiencing concurrent mental illness and homelessness, yet evidence regarding effective support options is mixed. Choices is an intensive 3-month psychosocial outreach and crisis accommodation support programme for adults experiencing mental illness and homelessness, delivered by Baptcare in Tasmania, Australia. This study examined the effect of Choices on adults' psychosocial functioning, clinical symptomology and psychiatric readmissions in comparison to standard care only.
