Novel peeling skin condition in neonatal Pacific walruses, Saint Lawrence Island, Alaska, USA.

We describe here a novel peeling skin condition (PSC) in 2 neonatal Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus subsp. divergens). Macroscopically, calves had various degrees of peeling skin exacerbated by mechanical trauma. Lesions occurred in areas subject to friction: ventrum, fore- and hindflippers, and associated joints. Histopathologic features included pseudocarcinomatous epithelial hyperplasia with orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis. Bacterial cocci were present within the stratum corneum. A few intraepidermal clefts were present. Inflammation, epidermolysis, and vasculopathies were not observed. P

Curcumin-mediated sono/photodynamic treatment preserved the quality of shrimp surimi and influenced its microbial community changes during refrigerated storage.

Shrimp surimi is widely acknowledged as a value-added shrimp product due to its delicious taste, rich flavor, and nutrition. However, the refrigerated shrimp surimi is prone to deterioration due to rapid microbial growth during storage. The present study sought to assess the effects of curcumin-mediated sono/photodynamic treatment on bacterial spoilage and shrimp surimi quality stored at 4 °C. The total viable count (TVC), microbiota composition, and quality parameters, including the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARs), and pH were investigated

Temperature and Ultraviolet Radiation Influence the Skin Microbiome of Humpback Whales.

The skin microbiome of humpback whales harbours diverse microbial communities that play a crucial role in host skin protection and environmental interaction. However, studies on cetacean skin microbiomes in the Southern Hemisphere focus on feeding grounds, with limited information on microbiome dynamics at breeding grounds and during migration across contrasting habitats. We characterised the skin microbiome of 46 humpback whales from two seasonal habitats: the Magellan Strait feeding ground and the Ecuadorian coast breeding ground, comparing age, sex, environmental conditions, and seawater. Comparative Lung Bacterial Community Profiles in Pneumonic and Non-Pneumonic Akkaraman Lambs.

Ovine pneumonia is a multifactorial respiratory disease, yet bacterial community alterations associated with pathologically confirmed pneumonia in lambs remain poorly characterised. This study investigated the lung bacterial microbiota of non-pneumonic and pneumonic Akkaraman lambs by integrating gross and histopathological examination with 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The final dataset comprised lung samples from 15 non-pneumonic and 14 pneumonic lambs. Alpha diversity did not differ significantly between groups, whereas bacterial community composition differed significantly for both Br

Psychrotrophic Antarctic marine bacteria as potential reservoirs for novel antimicrobial genes.

Antarctica is a very cold, isolated continent surrounded by frozen seas, yet these extreme environmental conditions have not restricted life and diversity in the sea. The marine environment is seasonally highly productive and harbours diverse and abundant communities of organisms, with many endemic species occurring nowhere else in the world. Such communities and their associated microbiomes are increasingly recognized as an unexplored source of novel antimicrobial products. Hence, the major aim of this study was to examine the antimicrobial potential of bacteria cultured from eight Antarctic

Microbial succession drives quality deterioration in refrigerated golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus): regulatory network of dominant spoilage microbiota on characteristic biomarkers.

Elucidating the quality deterioration mechanisms of refrigerated golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus), this study integrated 16S rRNA gene sequencing and untargeted metabolomics to systematically dissect how microbial ecological succession drives metabolic changes. As critical spoilage indicators, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) continuously increased during storage, indicating significant deterioration by day 6. Microbial community succession analysis revealed that Psychrobacter, Shewanella, and Pseudomonas gradually became the dominant

Impacts of environmental complexity on respiratory and gut microbiome community structure and diversity in growing pigs.

The limited understanding of the interaction between rearing environment of the growing pig and the pig's microbial community impedes efforts to identify the optimal housing system to maximize animal health and production. Accordingly, we characterized the impact of housing complexity on shaping the respiratory and gut microbiota of growing pig. A total of 175 weaned pigs from 25 litters were randomly assigned within liter to either simple slatted-floor (S) or complex straw-based rearing ecosystem (C). Beside the floor swabs samples, fecal swabs and mucosal scraping samples from bronchus, ileu

Different effects of bio/non-degradable microplastics on sewage sludge compost performance: Focusing on antibiotic resistance genes, virulence factors and key metabolic functions.

Microplastics (MP) have aroused increasing concern due to the negative environmental impact. However, the impact of bio/non-biodegradable MPs on the sludge composting process has not been thoroughly investigated. This study examined antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), virulence factors (VFs), and microbial community functions in sludge compost with the application of polylactic acid (PLA) and polypropylene (PP), using metagenomic sequencing. The findings indicated that both types of MPs could extend the thermophilic phase, enhance microbial activity, and inhibit the formation of humic acids. C

Next-Generation Sequencing Insights into the Oral Microbiome and Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Grey Wolves (Canis lupus).

The oral microbiome of apex predators such as grey wolves (Canis lupus) is colonised by complex microbial communities and plays a crucial role in the health of wild mammals, but remains poorly understood. In this study, a single pooled sample mixed from oral samples of 17 wolves (Canis lupus) hunted in Lithuania was investigated for the determination of a variety of oral microbiota, providing the first metagenomic insight into wolf oral microbiomes in Baltic countries. The aim of this study was to identify the zoonotic and antimicrobial resistance potential of the oral microbiota. The results
