Occupational IgE-mediated psyllium allergy in contemporary gluten-free and vegan baking: A case of allergic rhinitis.

Psyllium (from Plantago ovata; ispaghula) is used as a dietary supplement and is supplied in the form of husk, granules, capsules, or powder. Consumers using psyllium-containing laxatives, healthcare workers handling these, and pharmaceutical workers in laxative-manufacturing plants are known to be at risk of sensitization and subsequent rhinitis, asthma, contact urticaria, and even anaphylaxis. To our knowledge, the case we present here is the first of baker's immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated occupational allergy due to psyllium exposure. Our patient, a 24-year-old female baker with no previou

Intake of psyllium seed husk reduces white matter damage in a rat model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion.

Vascular dementia (VaD) develops through a pre-VaD step during which blood vessels narrow due to atherosclerosis attributed to risk factors, including hyperlipidemia. This is followed by a VaD progression step during which inadequate blood supply results in white matter damage and consequent cognitive impairment. Furthermore, administration of arabinoxylan attenuated white matter damage in a rat model of VaD. Thus, we hypothesized that consumption of psyllium seed husk (PSH), containing a high level of arabinoxylan (~60%), could inhibit the VaD progression step. To test this hypothesis, rats w

Psyllium improves fecal consistency and prevents enhanced secretory responses in jejunal tissues of piglets infected with ETEC.

Infection with enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) induces secretory diarrhea by stimulating net secretion of fluid and electrolytes. We tested the hypothesis that ETEC potentiates jejunal ion secretion induced by other agonists and also examined whether the soluble fiber psyllium ameliorates effects of ETEC-induced pathophysiology. Noninfected or ETEC-infected piglets were given oral electrolyte solution twice daily or electrolyte solution supplemented with psyllium for 48 hr. Jejunal tissues were mounted in flux chambers and basal and stimulated ion transport responses, as reflected by short-circ

Psyllium is a natural nonfermented gel-forming fiber that is effective for weight loss: A comprehensive review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Psyllium is a natural, predominantly soluble fiber that forms a viscous gel when hydrated and is not digested or fermented. In the small intestine, psyllium gel increases chyme viscosity, slowing the degradation and absorption of nutrients. Psyllium has a significant effect in patients with metabolic syndrome and type-2 diabetes on glycemic control, while lowering serum cholesterol in hypercholesterolemic patients. Some randomized controlled studies have shown that psyllium also facilitates weight loss in overweight and obese participants. OBJECTIVES: A comprehensive review and me

Uncontrolled study assessing the impact of a psyllium-enriched extruded dry diet on faecal consistency in cats with constipation.

Two field trials, involving 66 cats (15 trial 1; 51 trial 2) were conducted to assess the efficacy of a psyllium-enriched diet for management of constipation in cats. After investigations and faecal evacuation (by enema if required), all cats were fed on a moderate fibre, psyllium-enriched, dry extruded diet. Additional therapy was either not used (trial 1), or initially allowed but was subsequently withdrawn if possible (trial 2). The diet was well tolerated, and palatability was excellent. Most cases improved after initial therapy (at 2 months; trial 1: 14/15 [93%]; trial 2: 42/51 [82%]), an

Effects of daily consumption of psyllium, oat bran and polyGlycopleX on obesity-related disease risk factors: A critical review.

The persistent obesity crisis, with its increased risk for the metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (CVD), continues to damage the health of populations globally, including children. Diets rich in the fiber provided by fruit and vegetables support good metabolic health, although few adults and children achieve the recommended daily target. Daily fiber supplementation, particularly with soluble fiber products, such as psyllium, oat bran, or a newer product such as PolyGlycopleX, may provide a convenient solution. Literature searches were conducted to identify o

Psyllium gel combined with a micronized NaCl-KCl-glutamate system for simultaneous fat and sodium reduction in pork burgers.

This study evaluated psyllium gel (PG) combined with micronized NaCl, KCl, and monosodium glutamate (MKG) to reformulate fat- and sodium-reduced pork burgers. Fifty percent of pork backfat was replaced with PG prepared at 1:2, 1:4, and 1:6 psyllium:water ratios. In sodium-reduced formulations, 2.0% NaCl was replaced with 1.8% MKG (micronized NaCl:KCl:monosodium glutamate, 1:0.5:0.3). PG incorporation reduced fat content by 33.6-43.8% and saturated fatty acids by approximately 34-44%, increased cooking yield by 13.5-21.6% compared with MKG, and reduced hardness by 43.5-65.3% and chewiness by 65

Efficiency of a Combination of Polyethylene Glycol and Psyllium on the Evacuation of Sand Compared to Established Treatment Regimes in Sand Enteropathy of the Horse.

The accumulation of sand in the abdomen is a rising risk for colic in horses. Sand mainly accumulates in the ascending colon in the cranioventral abdomen. Evacuation of sand is facilitated by the application of psyllium supported with a laxative via nasogastric intubation. Laxatives currently used are either sodium sulfate/magnesium sulfate or mineral oil. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of polyethylene glycol, a laxative already used in human medicine for chronic constipation, with that of the above-described, established therapy options. Therefore, 44 horses diagnosed wit

Kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa), compared with cellulose and psyllium, influences the histology and mucus layer of the gastrointestinal tract in the growing pig.

Kiwifruit (KF) fiber, a mixture of soluble and insoluble fibers, elicits mucosal changes in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). This study aimed to define the nature of these changes in mucosal features throughout the GIT of the growing pig in response to semi-synthetic iso-fiber diets containing cellulose (CEL, low GIT luminal functionality) as the sole fiber source (4.5%), or diets where half of the CEL was replaced by either PSY fiber (PSY husk, high GIT luminal functionality) or KF fiber (consumed as intact fruit). Small bowel obstruction following computed tomography and magnetic resonance enterography using psyllium seed husk as an oral contrast agent.

The authors report a case series describing four patients who developed small bowel obstruction following the use of psyllium seed husk as an oral contrast agent for computed tomography or magnetic resonance enterography. Radiologists who oversee computed tomography and magnetic resonance enterography should be aware of this potential complication when using psyllium seed husk and other bulking agents, particularly when imaging patients with known or suspected small bowel strictures or active inflammation.
