Congenital anomalies in Canada 2013: a perinatal health surveillance report by the Public Health Agency of Canada's Canadian Perinatal Surveillance System.

Congenital Anomalies in Canada 2013: A Perinatal Health Surveillance Report is the second national surveillance report from the Public Health Agency of Canada dedicated to congenital anomalies. It provides comprehensive data on congenital anomalies in Canada, focussing on 6 categories of congenital anomalies: Down syndrome, neural tube defects, congenital heart defects, orofacial clefts, limb deficiency defects and gastroschisis. The report presents national-level birth prevalence data and temporal trends, provincial and territorial estimates, and international comparisons. Known risk factors,

Mobility surveillance as a public health blind spot in long-term care.

Public health surveillance in long-term care has appropriately prioritized acute adverse events that are discrete, reportable, and survey-sensitive, including falls, infections, pressure injuries, and hospital transfers (1, 2). These indicators capture immediate harm and regulatory risk, yet they only partially reflect resident trajectories. Functional mobility decline is common in institutional settings and is consistently associated with reduced community discharge, higher rehospitalization risk, and longer-term dependency (3-7). Although long-term care systems routinely collect functional d

Examining select sociodemographic characteristics of sub-county geographies for public health surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Mapping health outcomes related to environmental health hazards at the county level can lead to a simplification of risks experienced by populations in that county. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Environmental Public Health Tracking Program has developed sub-county geographies that aggregate census tracts to allow for stable, minimally suppressed data to be displayed. This helps to highlight more local variation in environmental health outcomes and risk data. However, we wanted to understand whether the aggregation method used was aggregating sociodemogra

Listeriosis: Characteristics, Occurrence in Domestic Animals, Public Health Significance, Surveillance and Control.

Listeriosis is a dangerous zoonosis caused by bacteria of the genus Listeria, with Listeria monocytogenes (LM) being the most pathogenic species. Listeria monocytogenes has been detected in various animal species and in humans, and its ability to evolve from an environmental saprophyte to a powerful intracellular pathogen is driven by the invasion mechanisms and virulence factors that enable cell invasion, replication and cell-to-cell spread. Key regulatory systems, including positive regulatory factor A (PrfA) and the stress-responsive sigma factor σB, control the expression of virulence gene

Public Health Surveillance for Adverse Events Following COVID-19 Vaccination in Africa.

Local, national, and international health agencies have advocated multi-pronged public health strategies to limit infections and prevent deaths. The availability of safe and effective vaccines is critical in the control of a pandemic. Several adverse events have been reported globally following reception of different vaccines, with limited or no data from Africa. This cross-sectional epidemiological study investigated adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination in Africans from April-June, 2021 using a structured online questionnaire. Out of 1200 participants recruited, a total of 80.8% (n =

Adding sexual orientation questions to statewide public health surveillance: New Mexico's experience.

We examined refusal rates for sensitive demographic questions to determine whether questions on sexual orientation are too sensitive for routine use on public health surveys. We compared the percentage of active refusals in New Mexico for a sexual orientation question and 6 other sensitive demographic questions. In 2007 and 2008, refusal rates for sexual orientation questions were similar to rates for questions on race/ethnicity and weight and significantly lower than rates for questions on household income. Perceptions that sexual orientation is too controversial a topic to be included on sta

Immediate public health surveillance response to cyclone Chido, Mayotte, 14 December 2024.

On 14 December 2024, Cyclone Chido caused extensive damage to infrastructures in Mayotte, including water, electricity and communication networks. Health surveillance systems were no longer functional. Santé publique France provided health risk analyses to support local control measures. Malnutrition and dehydration, follow-up care, pregnancy and post-partum complications, mental health, gastrointestinal diseases, bacterial wound superinfections and bronchiolitis were the main risk identified. The preliminary ad hoc surveillance systems confirmed our analyses. We also present lessons learnt 1

Improving public health surveillance of chlamydia: analysis of population-level positivity trends.

UNLABELLED: Background Chlamydia remains Australia's most frequently notified communicable disease; however, interpretation of notification data is difficult without knowledge of testing practices. This study examined the value of reporting positivity trends. METHODS: Tasmanian population-level chlamydia laboratory tests and notification data from 2001 to 2010 were compared. RESULTS: Notifications, tests and positivity increased, most significantly in males and females aged 15-29 years. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of chlamydia positivity trends can inform the development, monitoring and evaluatio

Expert knowledge sourcing for public health surveillance: national tsetse mapping in Uganda.

In much of sub-Saharan Africa, availability of standardized and reliable public health data is poor or negligible. Despite continued calls for the prioritization of improved health datasets in poor regions, public health surveillance remains a significant global health challenge. Alternate approaches to surveillance and collection of public health data have thus garnered increasing interest, though there remains relatively limited research evaluating these approaches for public health. Herein, we present a case study applying and evaluating the use of expert knowledge sources for public health

Evaluation of reporting timeliness of public health surveillance systems for infectious diseases.

BACKGROUND: Timeliness is a key performance measure of public health surveillance systems. Timeliness can vary by disease, intended use of the data, and public health system level. Studies were reviewed to describe methods used to evaluate timeliness and the reporting timeliness of National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) data was evaluated to determine if this system could support timely notification and state response to multistate outbreaks. METHODS: Published papers that quantitatively measured timeliness of infectious disease surveillance systems operating in the U.S. wer

Tick and Tickborne Pathogen Surveillance as a Public Health Tool in the United States.

In recent decades, tickborne disease (TBD) cases and established populations of medically important ticks have been reported over expanding geographic areas, and an increasing number of tickborne bacteria, viruses, and protozoans have been recognized as human pathogens, collectively contributing to an increasing burden of TBDs in the United States. The prevention and diagnosis of TBDs depend greatly on an accurate understanding by the public and healthcare providers of when and where persons are at risk for exposure to human-biting ticks and to the pathogens these ticks transmit. However, nati

Metagenomics for the study of viruses in urban sewage as a tool for public health surveillance.

The application of next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques for the identification of viruses present in urban sewage has not been fully explored. This is partially due to a lack of reliable and sensitive protocols for studying viral diversity and to the highly complex analysis required for NGS data processing. One important step towards this goal is finding methods that can efficiently concentrate viruses from sewage samples. Here the application of a virus concentration method based on skimmed milk organic flocculation (SMF) using 10L of sewage collected in different seasons enabled the d

Statistical approaches to the monitoring and surveillance of infectious diseases for veterinary public health.

This paper covers the aspect of using statistical methodology for the monitoring and surveillance of routinely collected data in veterinary public health. An account of the Farrington algorithm and Poisson cumulative sum schemes for the prospective detection of aberrations is given with special attention devoted to the occurrence of seasonality and spatial aggregation of the time series. Modelling approaches for retrospective analysis of surveillance counts are also described. To illustrate the applicability of the methodology in veterinary public health, data from the monitoring of rabies amo
