Assessing the Effects of Publication Bias on Reported Outcomes of Cervical Disc Replacement and Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion: A Meta-Epidemiologic Study.

BACKGROUND: There have been several clinical trials as well as observational studies that have compared the outcomes of different cervical disc replacement (CDR) devices with anterior cervical disc replacement and fusion (ACDF). Although the results of these studies have provided sufficient evidence for the safety of CDR, there is still a lack of consensus in terms of longer-term outcomes, with studies providing equivocal results for the 2 procedures. In the current study, we used a novel methodology, a meta-epidemiologic study, to investigate the impact of study characteristics on the observe

Exposure reduces negative bias in self-rated performance in public speaking fearful participants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Individuals with public speaking anxiety (PSA) under-rate their performance compared to objective observers. The present study examined whether exposure reduces the discrepancy between self and observer performance ratings and improved observer-rated performance in individuals with PSA. METHODS: PSA participants gave a speech in front of a small audience and rated their performance using a questionnaire before and after completing repeated exposures to public speaking. Non-anxious control participants gave a speech and completed the questionnaire one time only. Obje

Residual Disease After Primary Surgical Treatment for Advanced Epithelial Ovarian Cancer, Part 2: Network Meta-analysis Incorporating Expert Elicitation to Adjust for Publication Bias.

BACKGROUND: Previous work has identified a strong association between the achievements of macroscopic cytoreduction and improved overall survival (OS) after primary surgical treatment of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer. Despite the use of contemporary methodology, resulting in the most comprehensive currently available evidence to date in this area, opponents remain skeptical. AREAS OF UNCERTAINTY: We aimed to conduct sensitivity analyses to adjust for potential publication bias, to confirm or refute existing conclusions and recommendations, leveraging elicitation to incorporate expert opi

Lack of children in public medical imaging data points to growing age bias in biomedical AI.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare, but its benefits are not reaching all patients equally. Children remain overlooked with only 17% of FDA-approved medical AI devices labeled for pediatric use. In this work, we demonstrate that this exclusion may stem from a fundamental data gap. Our systematic review of 181 public medical imaging datasets reveals that children represent just under 1% of available data, while the majority of machine learning imaging conference papers we surveyed utilized publicly available data for methods development. Much like systematic biases

Enhancing public health surveillance: A statistical validation of potential sampling bias in large retrospective vaccine cohorts.

In the context of Global Health, massive administrative datasets have become indispensable tools for health surveillance. However, the sheer scale of Big Data can mask systemic selection biases that standard mathematical adjustments may not fully mitigate. In this study, I propose a methodological audit of a recent large-scale cohort (N = 2,975,035) concerning COVID-19 vaccination and oncological outcomes. By benchmarking the cohort's architecture against national demographic and epidemiological gold standards through single-proportion Z-tests, we identified notable structural divergences. The

Metaresearch on patient-reported outcomes in trial protocols and results publications suggested large outcome reporting bias.

OBJECTIVES: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) provide crucial information for evaluating health-care interventions, but previous research in specific disease areas suggested infrequent use and incomplete reporting of PROs. We examined the prevalence and characteristics of PROs in randomized clinical trial (RCT) protocols across medical fields, their reporting quality, and the consistency between PROs specified in trial protocols and subsequent reporting in trial publications. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We included 237 RCT protocols approved in 2012 and 251 approved in 2016, by ethics committees

Non-response bias in the Norwegian Counties Public Health Survey: Insights from linkage to register data.

AIMS: The Norwegian Counties Public Health Surveys (NCPHS) aim to capture critical aspects of the population's health and well-being. However, selective non-response can introduce bias, potentially compromising survey representativeness. This study assesses non-response patterns in NCPHS using registry data on health-related benefits. METHODS: NCPHS comprises cross-sectional web-based surveys assessing various health metrics in Norway's adult population. This study uses data from NCPHS conducted in Hordaland County (April 10 to May 17 2018). Health data, including sickness benefits, disabilit

Racial bias in federal nutrition policy, Part I: The public health implications of variations in lactase persistence.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the basis for all federal nutrition programs and incorporate the Food Guide Pyramid, a tool to educate consumers on putting the Guidelines into practice. The Pyramid recommends two to three daily servings of dairy products. However, research has shown that lactase nonpersistence, the loss of enzymes that digest the milk sugar lactose, occurs in a majority of African-, Asian-, Hispanic-, and Native-American individuals. Whites are less likely to develop lactase nonpersistence and less likely to have symptoms when it does occur. Calcium is available in o

Influence of study characteristics, methodological rigour and publication bias on efficacy of pharmacotherapy in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised, placebo-controlled trials.

QUESTION: We examined the effect of study characteristics, risk of bias and publication bias on the efficacy of pharmacotherapy in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). STUDY SELECTION AND ANALYSIS: We conducted a systematic search of double-blinded, placebo-controlled, short-term RCTs with selective serotonergic reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or clomipramine. We performed a random-effect meta-analysis using change in the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (YBOCS) as the primary outcome. We performed meta-regression for risk of bias, intervention, sponso

Self-focused attention vs. negative attentional bias during public speech task in socially anxious individuals.

Enhanced self-focused attention (SFA) and negative attentional bias (NAB) towards social cues are characteristic hallmarks of social anxiety. It is essential to investigate these two attentional phenomena under socially relevant situations using comparable stimuli. In the present study, individuals with high social anxiety (HSA, n = 32) and low social anxiety (LSA, n = 29) were compared according to their attention toward self-related stimuli and toward positive, neutral, and negative feedback related stimuli. Video stimuli of moving indicators of self-anxiety-status and positive, neutral, and

STEED: A data mining tool for automated extraction of experimental parameters and risk of bias items from in vivo publications.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Systematic reviews, i.e., research summaries that address focused questions in a structured and reproducible manner, are a cornerstone of evidence-based medicine and research. However, certain steps in systematic reviews, such as data extraction, are labour-intensive, which hampers their feasibility, especially with the rapidly expanding body of biomedical literature. To bridge this gap, we aimed to develop a data mining tool in the R programming environment to automate data extraction from neuroscience in vivo publications. Examples of Outcome Reporting Bias in Vaccine Studies: Illustrating How Perpetuating Medical Consensus Can Impede Progress in Public Health.

INTRODUCTION: Outcome reporting bias in vaccine studies is a widespread problem among all researchers who have a tendency to report selective results and conclusions that support their beliefs and values or those of sponsoring agencies. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, this bias surfaced through the unprecedented proliferation of conflicting vaccine studies. Many researchers strongly recommend and report on the safety and effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine. Those researchers who embrace the COVID-19 vaccine and vaccines, in general, are often dismissive of other researchers who pres

The Association of Built Environment and Physical Activity in Older Adults: Using a Citywide Public Housing Scheme to Reduce Residential Self-Selection Bias.

Previous studies have documented numerous health benefits of conducting regular physical activity among older adults. The built environment is believed to be a key factor that can hinder or facilitate daily physical activity, such as walking and exercising. However, most empirical studies focusing on environment-physical activity associations exhibited residential self-selection bias with cross-sectional research design, engendering doubts about the impact of built environment on physical activity. To reduce this bias, we assessed physical activity behaviors of 720 Hong Kong older adults (≥65

Pessimism or optimism? A tri-spatial analysis of public risk perception bias and its influencing mechanisms: evidence from 31 major cities in China.

BACKGROUND: Public risk perception bias (PRPB) is a critical psychological and social determinant that substantially shapes public health outcomes and the effectiveness of safety governance-particularly during large-scale crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Amid increasingly complex urban risk landscapes, traditional single/dual-spatial frameworks fail to capture PRPB's multi-source and interactive nature. METHODS: This study develops an Extended Tri-Spatial Prism Model to measure PRPB across 31 major Chinese cities (2017-2023) using multi-source data and explores its spatiotemporal dynamics a

Systematic pattern analyses of Vδ2+ TCRs reveal that shared "public" Vδ2+ γδ T cell clones are a consequence of rearrangement bias and a higher expansion status.

BACKGROUND: Vγ9Vδ2+ T cells are a major innate T cell subset in human peripheral blood. Their Vδ2+ VDJ-rearrangements are short and simple in the fetal thymus and gradually increase in diversity and CDR3 length along with development. So-called "public" versions of Vδ2+ TCRs are shared among individuals of all ages. However, it is unclear whether such frequently occurring "public" Vγ9Vδ2+ T cell clones are derived from the fetal thymus and whether they are fitter to proliferate and persist than infrequent "private" clones. METHODS: Shared "public" Vδ2+ TCRs were identified from Vδ2+ TCR-reper

Determinants of selective reporting: A taxonomy based on content analysis of a random selection of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Selective reporting is wasteful, leads to bias in the published record and harms the credibility of science. Studies on potential determinants of selective reporting currently lack a shared taxonomy and a causal framework. OBJECTIVE: To develop a taxonomy of determinants of selective reporting in science. DESIGN: Inductive qualitative content analysis of a random selection of the pertinent literature including empirical research and theoretical reflections. METHODS: Using search terms for bias and selection combined with terms for reporting and publication, we systematically sea

Reporting bias in orthopaedic science-Are we telling the whole story?

Orthopaedic congresses and journals are dominated by positive results, creating the impression that modern surgical techniques yield uniformly excellent outcomes. In reality, complications, suboptimal results, and abandoned techniques remain underreported-a reflection of outcome reporting bias (ORB) and publication bias. Professional incentives, reputational concerns, and competitive pressures favour success stories while discouraging the publication of negative findings. Yet, these data are crucial for scientific progress and patient care, offering lessons that help avoid repeated mistakes. T
