Use of Pulsed Radiofrequency for the Treatment of Discogenic Back Pain: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Low-back pain (LBP) is one of the most frequently reported symptoms of patients who visit pain clinics, and a significant proportion of them have discogenic pain. Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) stimulation is an effective treatment for various types of pain. PURPOSE: We reviewed articles which investigated the effectiveness of intradiscal PRF for controlling discogenic LBP. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We searched PubMed for papers published prior to August 7, 2020, in which intradiscal PRF was used for treating discogenic LBP. The key search phrase was (intradiscal PRF) for identifying p

Percutaneous Continuous Radiofrequency Versus Pulsed Radiofrequency Thermorhizotomy for the Treatment of Neuralgia of the Trigeminal Nerve: A Retrospective Observational Study.

OBJECTIVES: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) represents one of the most powerful manifestations of neuropathic pain. The diagnostic criteria, as well as its therapeutic modalities, stand firmly established. The percutaneous radiofrequency thermorhizotomy of the gasserian ganglion and posterior root of the trigeminal nerve stands as a widely employed procedure in this context. In this retrospective observational investigation, we undertake a comparative analysis of patients subjected to treatment employing continuous radiofrequency (C-rF) versus pulsed radiofrequency (P-rF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A

Efficacy and safety of continuous radiofrequency thermocoagulation plus pulsed radiofrequency for treatment of V1 trigeminal neuralgia: A prospective cohort study.

Patients may develop serious eye complications after continuous radiofrequency thermocoagulation (CRF) for V1 (ophthalmic division) trigeminal neuralgia (TN) at a higher temperature. Therefore, the temperature of clinical CRF for V1 TN has long been disputed, but there have few reports been found about how to achieve satisfactory pain relief, reduce the incidence rates of complications, and shorten the recovery time after CRF for V1 TN.To observe whether pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) can lead to increased rate in pain relief, reduced rate of complications, or shortened recovery time after CRF is

Pulsed Radiofrequency-Enhanced Dual Sympathetic Block for the Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Dual sympathetic blocks (DSBs) have been shown to provide significant symptom relief in individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, despite the clinical significance of DSB in PTSD treatment, a subset of patients experience the recurrence of somatic symptoms of PTSD and trauma-induced anxiety. The purpose of this case report is to describe our experience with the successful treatment of acute symptoms of PTSD by using serial DSBs and DSBs with pulsed radiofrequency (PRF). An 18-year-old male who had suffered multiple childhood traumatic events presented with severe and per

Pulsed radiofrequency treatment of piriformis syndrome in a pregnant patient with malignant mesenchymal tumor.

Cancer is frequently seen in women of reproductive age. Diagnosis, management of treatment, and safety of the therapeutic approach are particularly important for these patients. Presently described is pain management in a case of pregnancy with malignant mesenchymal tumor. A 23-year-old woman in 30th gestational week presented with severe pain in right hip and back of the right thigh. Piriformis block successfully decreased pain and was followed by pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) to the piriformis muscle. PRF, as a non-neurodestructive method, is a safe and effective method to treat cancer pain in

Radiofrequency Treatment of Idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia (Conventional vs. Pulsed): A Prospective Randomized Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (TGN) is a chronic pain disorder causing unilateral, severe brief stabbing recurrent pain in the distribution of one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve. Conventional radiofrequency (CRF) and pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) are two types of minimally invasive treatment. CRF selectively ablates the part of ganglion to provide the relief, but it has been found to be associated with some side effects such as dysesthesia or sensory loss in 6%-28% and loss of corneal reflex in 3%-8% of patients. PRF is a comparatively newer modality which is a nondestruc

Epiderm-Abrasion-Assisted Intensive Pulsed Light and Radiofrequency in Aesthetic Treatment Extensive Facial Freckles.

BACKGROUND: Freckles are typical epidermal pigmented disorders that occur at sun-exposed areas, presenting with dark-brown or light-brown circular hyperpigmentation. A lot of treatment modalities have been used for treatment of freckles like chemicals, electrosurgery and cryotherapy. These treatments may cause undesirable side effects such as scaring (Sarkar et al. in Indian J Dermatol 62(6):578-584, 2017). Microdermabrasion has been used in treatment of freckles; however, the results are not satisfactory, as it removes the outermost layer of the epidermis only (El-Domyati et al. in J Cosmet D

Pulsed radiofrequency on radial nerve under ultrasound guidance for treatment of intractable lateral epicondylitis.

Lateral epicondylitis is a painful and functionally limiting disorder. Although lateral elbow pain is generally self-limiting, in a minority of people symptoms persist for a long time. When various conservative treatments fail, surgical approach is recommended. Surgical denervation of several nerves that innervate the lateral humeral epicondyle could be considered in patients with refractory pain because it denervates the region of pain. Pulsed radiofrequency is a minimally invasive procedure that improves chronic pain when applied to various neural tissues without causing any significant dest
