[Effects of vestibular spontaneous nystagmus on visual smooth pursuit function].

Objective: The aim of the study is to analyze the effects of vestibular spontaneous nystagmus(SN) on the smooth pursuit function of visual ocularmotor system. Methods: A total of 46 patients with acute unilateral peripheral vestibular syndrome with SN (26 cases of vestibular neuritis, 6 cases of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS) with vertigo, 14 cases of sudden deafness with vertigo) were included in this work. In the study group, the results of SPT and SN test with videonystagmography(VNG) were also reviewed. Taking SPT parameters, the influence of SN intensity on SPT gain, asymmetry and waveform an

Attentional constraints on target selection for smooth pursuit eye movements.

Saccadic eye movements are strongly influenced by shifts of attention to non-target objects. In contrast, we have shown previously that the initiation of smooth pursuit eye movements is relatively unaffected when attention is shifted to objects that are either stationary or move in the same direction as the pursuit target (Souto & Kerzel, 2008). Here, we asked how attention interacts with target selection when a choice has to be made between objects moving in opposite directions. In a dual-task paradigm, observers had to pursue a designated object while making a perceptual judgment on an objec

Deficits in predictive smooth pursuit after mild traumatic brain injury.

Given that even mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) may produce extensive diffuse axonal injury (DAI), we hypothesized that mild TBI patients would show deficits in predictive smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM), associated with impaired cognitive functions, as these processes are dependent on common white matter connectivity between multiple cerebral and cerebellar regions. The ability to predict target trajectories during SPEM was investigated in 21 mild TBI patients using a periodic sinusoidal paradigm. Compared to 26 control subjects, TBI patients demonstrated decreased target prediction. TB

Experimental and computational analysis of monkey smooth pursuit eye movements.

Smooth pursuit eye movements are guided by visual feedback and are surprisingly accurate despite the time delay between visual input and motor output. Previous models have reproduced the accuracy of pursuit either by using elaborate visual signals or by adding sources of motor feedback. Our goal was to constrain what types of signals drive pursuit by obtaining data that would discriminate between these two modeling approaches, represented by the "image motion model" and the "tachometer feedback" model. Our first set of experiments probed the visual properties of pursuit with brief square-pulse

Smooth pursuit in 1- to 4-month-old human infants.

The ability of human infants < or = 4 months of age to pursue objects smoothly with their eyes was assessed by presenting small target spots moving with hold-ramp-hold trajectories at ramp velocities of 4-32 deg/sec. Infants as young as 1 month old followed such target motions with a combination of smooth-pursuit and saccadic eye movements interrupted occasionally by periods when the eyes remained stationary. The slowest targets produced variable performance, but targets moving 8-32 deg/sec produced consistent pursuit behavior, even in the youngest infants. By the fourth month, eye-movement la

Pseudo random smooth pursuit test in patients with acoustic neuroma.

We examined the pseudo random smooth pursuit test in patients with cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors. Four different frequency combinations of sinusoids 0.15-0.35 Hz, 0.25-0.425 Hz, 0.3-0.7 Hz and 0.45-0.7 Hz were tested. Gain was calculated by comparing the smooth pursuit amplitude with stimulus after the supporting saccades had been removed. Phase was calculated by comparing maximum excursion of the eyes and stimulus. Gain was in the patients lower than in the controls in different frequency combinations, and the difference was statistically significant/highly significant in different freq

The role of frontal pursuit area in interaction between smooth pursuit eye movements and attention: A TMS study.

Close coupling between attention and smooth pursuit eye movements has been widely established and frontal eye field (FEF) is a "hub" region for attention and eye movements. Frontal pursuit area (FPA), a subregion of the FEF, is part of neural circuit for the pursuit, here, we directly checked the role of the FPA in the interaction between the pursuit and attention. To do it, we applied a dual-task paradigm where an attention demanding task was integrated into the pursuit target and interrupted the FPA using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). In the study, participants were required to pu

Vestibular-related frontal cortical areas and their roles in smooth-pursuit eye movements: representation of neck velocity, neck-vestibular interactions, and memory-based smooth-pursuit.

Smooth-pursuit eye movements are voluntary responses to small slow-moving objects in the fronto-parallel plane. They evolved in primates, who possess high-acuity foveae, to ensure clear vision about the moving target. The primate frontal cortex contains two smooth-pursuit related areas; the caudal part of the frontal eye fields (FEF) and the supplementary eye fields (SEF). Both areas receive vestibular inputs. We review functional differences between the two areas in smooth-pursuit. Most FEF pursuit neurons signal pursuit parameters such as eye velocity and gaze-velocity, and are involved in c

Vertical smooth pursuit as a diagnostic marker of traumatic brain injury.

AIM: Neural deficits were measured via the eye tracking of vertical smooth pursuit (VSP) as markers of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The present study evaluated the ability of the eye tracking tests to differentiate between different levels of TBI severity and healthy controls. METHODOLOGY: Ninety-two individuals divided into four groups (those with mild, moderate or severe TBI and healthy controls) participated in a computerized test of VSP eye movement using a remote eye tracker. RESULTS: The VSP eye tracking test was able to distinguish between severe and moderate levels of TBI but unable

Context effects on smooth pursuit and manual interception of a disappearing target.

In our natural environment, we interact with moving objects that are surrounded by richly textured, dynamic visual contexts. Yet most laboratory studies on vision and movement show visual objects in front of uniform gray backgrounds. Context effects on eye movements have been widely studied, but it is less well known how visual contexts affect hand movements. Here we ask whether eye and hand movements integrate motion signals from target and context similarly or differently, and whether context effects on eye and hand change over time. We developed a track-intercept task requiring participants

Eye, head, and gaze contributions to smooth pursuit in macular degeneration.

Macular degeneration (MD) often leads to the loss of the fovea and surrounding central visual field. This type of visual loss is very common and can present particular challenges for oculomotor tasks that may rely on the fovea. For certain tasks, individuals develop a new, eccentric fixational locus. Our previous work has shown that smooth pursuit is impaired in MD. However, extent of retinal lesion size and eccentricity of fixation do not directly contribute to changes in smooth pursuit gain. Oculomotor limitations due to eccentric eye position in the orbit may be another culprit. Here we tes

Dynamics of attention during the initiation of smooth pursuit eye movements.

Many studies indicate that saccades are necessarily preceded by a shift of attention to the target location. There is no direct evidence for the same coupling during smooth pursuit. If smooth pursuit and attention were coupled, pursuit onset should be delayed whenever attention is focused on a stationary, non-target location. To test this hypothesis, observers were instructed to shift their attention to a peripheral location according to a location cue (Experiments 1 and 2) or a symbolic cue (Experiment 3) around the time of smooth pursuit initiation. Attending to static targets had only negli

Smooth pursuit eye movements and phonological processing in adults with dyslexia.

The extent to which adults with dyslexia are characterized by concurrent smooth pursuit eye movement and phonological difficulties was investigated, as was the relationship between performance on these respective tasks and literacy skills. A total of 19 adults with dyslexia and 19 age- and IQ-matched controls undertook a comprehensive battery of psychometric, literacy, and phonological tests. Smooth pursuit initiation was measured quantitatively under both gap and nongap conditions. The results revealed that adults with dyslexia had longer smooth pursuit latencies; however, both groups showed

Spatial mapping of the remote distractor effect on smooth pursuit initiation.

In order to extract information from the visual world, it is necessary to bring the images of objects of interest to rest on the high acuity part of the retina, the fovea. Primates, including humans, use two types of eye movement, saccades and smooth pursuit, to accomplish this. While classically conceived of as being separate and distinct, various lines of evidence indicate a close linkage between these two eye movement systems. They are often investigated at a behavioural level by presenting subjects with single targets to saccade or to track. We investigated the effect of presenting a singl

Effects of ketamine on brain function during smooth pursuit eye movements.

The uncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist ketamine has been proposed to model symptoms of psychosis. Smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) are an established biomarker of schizophrenia. SPEM performance has been shown to be impaired in the schizophrenia spectrum and during ketamine administration in healthy volunteers. However, the neural mechanisms mediating SPEM impairments during ketamine administration are unknown. In a counter-balanced, placebo-controlled, double-blind, within-subjects design, 27 healthy participants received intravenous racemic ketamine (100 ng/mL target plasma concentrat

Inhibitory control during smooth pursuit in Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease.

The basal ganglia are involved in the preferential selection and suppression of competing responses. Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease are 2 prototypical basal ganglia disorders that feature impaired inhibitory control, a function of poor conflict resolution. Previous saccadic studies showed that individuals with Parkinson's disease experience difficulty suppressing unwanted ocular motor responses, whereas evidence for a similar difficulty in Huntington's disease is more equivocal. Relative to saccades, few research studies have examined inhibitory control processes in the context o

Local motion inside an object affects pointing less than smooth pursuit.

During smooth pursuit eye movements, briefly presented objects are mislocalized in the direction of motion. It has been proposed that the localization error is the sum of the pursuit signal and the retinal motion signal in a ~200 ms interval after flash onset. To evaluate contributions of retinal motion signals produced by the entire object (global motion) and elements within the object (local motion), we asked observers to reach to flashed Gabor patches (Gaussian-windowed sine-wave gratings). Global motion was manipulated by varying the duration of a stationary flash, and local motion was man

Oculomotor function in Wernicke-Korsakoff's syndrome: II. Smooth pursuit eye movements.

Smooth pursuit eye movements were studied in three patients with alcoholic Korsakoff's syndrome, one with Wernicke's encephalopathy, and an age-matched control. Horizontal smooth pursuit eye movements were abnormal in all patients: peak eye velocity and the ability to sustain smooth eye velocity were reduced. Also, smooth pursuit gain began to decrease at relatively low target velocities (i.e., 8-10 degrees). These data demonstrate a severe disturbance in smooth pursuit function long after the clinically apparent oculomotor abnormalities have passed.

Luminance integration occurs in retinal coordinates during smooth pursuit eye movements.

Active vision relies on different forms of eye movements that require the usage of different spatial coordinate systems for successful vision. This is often overlooked in visual psychophysics, when tasks are performed under fixation only, inherently confounding retinal and real-world coordinates. Here we investigated whether the psychophysical principle of luminance integration across time generalizes to smooth pursuit eye movements and in which spatial coordinate system integration operates. In Experiment 1, participants smoothly tracked a moving object, and two brief liminal luminance target
