Efficacy and nontarget effects of reduced-risk insecticides on Aphis glycines (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and its biological control agent Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae).

The efficacy of three reduced-risk insecticides (pyrethrins, insecticidal soap, and narrow-range mineral oil) was determined for nymphs and adults of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), an exotic pest of North American soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. These insecticides also were evaluated for nontarget effects on one of the aphid's key biological control agents, multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), including first and third instars, pupae, and adults. A Potter Spray Tower was used to conduct direct spray laborat

Treatment of ectoparasitic infections: review of the English-language literature, 1982-1992.

We reviewed the English-language literature of 1982-1992 for papers concerning scabies, pediculosis, and their treatments; this information was supplemented with opinions of workers in the field of ectoparasitic disease. Six treatment trials for scabies, one study of the treatment of pediculosis pubis, and additional studies on the treatment of pediculosis capitis were included. Both lindane 1% and permethrin 5% are effective treatments for scabies, although resistance to lindane does exist. Lindane 1%, permethrin 1%, and pyrethrins with piperonyl butoxide are all effective treatments for pedi

Pyriderm shampoo in the treatment of Pediculosis capitis.

112 patients with head lice were treated with a shampoo containing pyrethrins. All were treated twice with an interval of one week. At examination immediately before the second treatment, 6 patients had small, newly hatched lice, and one patient had both small and mature lice--probably due to reinfestation. This patient was lice-free after the third treatment, the other patients after the second treatment. It is concluded that pyrethrins are highly effective against head lice and have the advantages of a low toxicity to mammals and a short contact time.

Functional analysis of novel cystatins from Haemaphysalis doenitzi and evaluation of their roles in cypermethrin and λ-cyhalothrin resistance.

Currently, the primary strategy for tick control relies on chemical agents. Pyrethrins, which are botanically derived compounds, have demonstrated efficacy in controlling ticks without posing a risk to human or animal health. However, research into pyrethrins' metabolic mechanisms remains sparse. Cystatin, as a reversible binding inhibitor of cysteine protease, may be involved in the initiation of pyrethrin detoxification of Haemaphysalis doenitzi. In this study, two novel cystatins were cloned, HDcyst-3 and HDcyst-4, the relative expression of which was highest in the Malpighian tubules compa

A Rare Case of Pyrethroid Poisoning Presenting as Auditory Hallucination.

Pyrethroid is an insecticide which is widely used for household pests. Even though they are relatively less toxic to humans, reports of accidental poisoning are not uncommon. Cases of anosmia, tremors and arrhythmias after pyrethroid exposure have been reported; however auditory hallucinations have not been presented yet. Herein, we present a case of auditory hallucination in the form of ringing in the ear after exposure to airborne pyrethrin in a 69-year-old male. The significance of this case report is related to the wide use of insecticides containing pyrethrin and highlights the need for p

Effects of Silica-Based CimeXa and Drione Dusts Against Lone Star Tick (Ixodida: Ixodidae) on Cattle.

Ixodid ticks vector pathogens of humans, livestock, and wildlife, and occur in tropical and temperate regions worldwide. We used the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Ixodida: Ixodidae), as a model for other ixodid species, including the southern cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini) (Ixodida: Ixodidae). We assessed the lethality of CimeXa, an inert silica-based desiccant dust, and Drione, a silica-based desiccant dust with pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide (PBO), against A. americanum larvae and nymphs on calves. CimeXa was highly lethal to larvae release

Correlation between aerial insecticide spraying to interrupt west nile virus transmission and emergency department visits in Sacramento County, California.

OBJECTIVES: Insecticides reduce vector-borne pathogen transmission but also pose health risks. In August 2005, Sacramento County, California, underwent emergency aerial ultralow-volume (ULV) application of pyrethrin insecticide to reduce the population of West Nile virus (WNV)-infected mosquitoes and thereby interrupt enzootic and tangential transmission. We assessed the association between aerially applied pyrethrin insecticide and patterns of emergency department (ED) visit diagnoses. METHODS: We used geographic information systems software to determine ZIP Code-level exposure to pyrethrin.

Demographic study of head lice infestations in Sacramento County school children.

Head lice infestations have become a problem in school children in Sacramento County. An open study was conducted to determine how widespread head lice infestations were among preschool and elementary school children in Sacramento County and to see how effective a newly marked ever-the-counter pediculicide containing 0.3% pyrethrins synergized by 3.0% piperonyl butoxide was. The public health nurse for this study visited the homes of all reported patients infested with head lice. She verified and provided the pyrethrins-based treatment for 248 children, aged 6 months to 12 years. The children

Efficacy of Biopesticides for Management of the Swede Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae).

Management of the swede midge, Contarinia nasturtii Kieffer, in North American crucifer production relies on crop rotation and the timely application of synthetic insecticides, based on pheromone trap monitoring of local adult populations. Organically acceptable formulations of azadirachtin, pyrethrin, and spinosad, and a commercial biopesticide containing the entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana, were evaluated for their effects on larval mortality and oviposition deterrence in the greenhouse, and on damage symptoms in the field. In greenhouse trials, pyrethrin and spinosad treatments

Assessing organic chemical management strategies for Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Prostephanus truncatus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) at food facilities.

There is an increasing demand for organically certified practices throughout the postharvest supply chain. Yet, evaluating mortality and sublethal effects from organic chemical control options have received less attention. Thus, the aims of this study were to evaluate the direct mortality and changes in mobility of Prostephanus truncatus and Sitophilus zeamais when using (i) fresh residues or (ii) 7-mo-aged residues on maize from a suite of organically approved grain protectants (3 formulations of 5% pyrethrins, or 8.66% spinosad) compared to a conventional insecticide (4.75% deltamethrin) and

Surveillance of a kdr Resistance Mutation in Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) and Culex quinquefasciatus in California.

Culex pipiens Linnaeus and Culex quinquefasciatus Say are the primary vectors of West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses in California. Pyrethrins and pyrethroids (synthetic pyrethrins) are the most widely used insecticides to control adult stage mosquitoes to prevent disease transmission. The most abundant and widespread mutation associated with pyrethroid resistance is the L1014F mutation of the voltage-sensitive sodium channel gene. Statewide, based on the testing of almost 2,000 mosquitoes from 14 counties, the resistant allele frequency was 71%. Although the L1014F mutation was found

Suspected Permethrin-Containing Powder Bath Poisoning in a Flock of Mountain Quail (Oreortyx pictus).

Generally, birds are less sensitive to pyrethrins and pyrethroids compared to mammals; however, suspected permethrin toxicosis was fatal in seven mountain quails (Oreortyx pictus) treated with a permethrin-containing powder bath. Signs started appearing 3 days after the bath was placed in their enclosure and were non-specific with reduced activity and ruffled feathers. Unusually, the characteristic signs of permethrin poisoning were not observed, and infective causes of the birds' clinical signs were ruled out. A histopathological evaluation, however, revealed the malfunctioning of the liver a

Head-lice infestations and their treatment.

Head-lice infestations periodically cause disruption at schools and crèches. The life cycle of the insect and the treatment of infestation are discussed. Treatment is usually relatively simple and effective, relying mainly on the use of insecticides such as gamma benzene hexachloride, malathion and pyrethrins. Appropriate therapy for problem areas, for example the eyebrows, is also described.

Potential Alternatives to Spinosad as the Killing Agent Mixed With Two Attractant Products in Attract-and-Kill Formulations Used to Manage the Spotted-Wing Drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is a key pest of many berry and fruit crops worldwide. The primary method of controlling this pest is the application of insecticides. Attract-and-kill is a management tactic that may reduce the number of insecticide applications needed to manage D. suzukii. ACTTRA SWD OR1 and ACTTRA SWD TD, developed by ISCA Technologies Inc., combine D. suzukii attractants with a gel matrix. Growers add an insecticide as a killing agent. The only USDA National Organic Program approved organic insecticide that has been shown to

Head lice infestations: A clinical update.

Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) infestations are not a primary health hazard or a vector for disease, but they are a societal problem with substantial costs. Diagnosis of head lice infestation requires the detection of a living louse. Although pyrethrins and permethrin remain first-line treatments in Canada, isopropyl myristate/ST-cyclomethicone solution and dimeticone can be considered as second-line therapies when there is evidence of treatment failure.

Pyrethroid pediculicide resistance of head lice in Canada evaluated by serial invasive signal amplification reaction.

BACKGROUND: Most people in the United States and Canada with pediculosis will be treated with neurotoxic pediculicides containing pyrethrins or pyrethroids. Their widespread use led to significant resistance reported from various countries. Although treatment failures are frequently observed in Canada, the resistance frequency to pyrethroid pediculicide of human head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) has not been determined. OBJECTIVE: To determine the knockdown resistance (kdr) allele frequency in human head louse populations in Canada. METHODS: Patients infested with Pediculus humanus capit
