Quality indicators for structure and process in peri-operative care: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Quality indicators are essential for benchmarking, quality assurance and driving improvement in healthcare. Many indicators exist for peri-operative care but their relevance and evidence base vary. This systematic review updates a review published 10 years ago. It seeks to identify available structure and process indicators, and assess the level of evidence supporting them, with a view to informing the development of a core indicator set. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library were searched. English-language studies in adults were included, alongside grey lite

Assessment of the performance of primary healthcare in eight African countries: based on the Composite Fuzzy Index.

BACKGROUND: African countries face a dual burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases, placing substantial pressure on primary healthcare (PHC) systems. Existing indicator-weighting approaches are limited in addressing redundancy and non-linear relationships. In addition, conventional composite indices often rely on linear aggregation assumptions that may not adequately reflect complex relationships among PHC performance indicators. This study proposes a novel weighting method and composite index to improve facility-level assessment of PHC performance. METHODS: We analysed nationally r

Standardised mortality ratio based on the sum of age and percentage total body surface area burned is an adequate quality indicator in burn care: An exploratory review.

Standardised Mortality Ratio (SMR) based on generic mortality predicting models is an established quality indicator in critical care. Burn-specific mortality models are preferred for the comparison among patients with burns as their predictive value is better. The aim was to assess whether the sum of age (years) and percentage total body surface area burned (which constitutes the Baux score) is acceptable in comparison to other more complex models, and to find out if data collected from a separate burn centre are sufficient for SMR based quality assessment. The predictive value of nine burn-sp

Quality Care Assessment in Gout.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite the availability of effective pharmacotherapy to lower serum urate (SUA) levels and consequently reduce the likelihood of flares, gout remains a poorly managed condition. Quality of care assessments are of paramount importance in evaluating the performance of health systems and providers in managing gout, spanning patient (micro), provider or team (meso), and organizational or system-wide (macro) levels. This review focuses on the conceptual underpinnings on how quality of care in gout management is defined and assessed, highlighting methodological challenges, study

A unified approach assessing Hospitals' Quality and Patient Safety Compliance at organizational and national level using an evidence-based Mapping Tool.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization, the situational analysis process that establishes the current "state of quality" of a country's health system, is the foundational step to identifying the strategic directions of a National Quality Program for Quality of Care. This analysis that assesses relevant priorities, challenges, capacities, governance structures, and available resources, provides the basis for designing and implementing the appropriate program to support healthcare quality and patient safety improvements. Although there is a number of international standards relat

[Development of an indicator set for the evaluation of the population-based integrated healthcare model 'Gesundes Kinzigtal' (Healthy Kinzigtal)].

INTRODUCTION: The project "INTEGRAL-10-year evaluation of the population-based integrated health care model 'Gesundes Kinzigtal' (Healthy Kinzigtal)" (ICM-GK) is funded by the Innovation Committee of the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) (grant no. 01VSF16002). The evaluation is to be based on a set of indicators that can be captured in routine data. On the one hand, they can be used to assess ICM-GK programs that are program-specific and geared towards prevention and disease management. On the other hand, possible negative side effects of the ICM-GK, which is designed as a "shared savings contra

[Evaluation of the effectiveness of health care].

During the last two decades, the economic aspects of health care acquired an outstanding attentiveness in all developed countries. Simultaneously, the methods have been searched for a more intensive and perfect application of internal health sources, i.e. manpower, materials and money. New approaches in evaluating health care efficacy (conception of health provision as a branch of national economy) have been made. In accord with them, the efficiency of either individual or partial health actions such as health care programs, preventive measures, diagnostical and curative procedures etc.) is me

Quality of care indicators for gout management.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the significant health impact of gout, there is no consensus on management standards. To guide physician practice, we sought to develop quality of care indicators for gout management. METHODS: A systematic literature review of gout therapy was performed using the Medline database. Two abstractors independently reviewed each of the articles for relevance and satisfaction of minimal inclusion criteria. Based on the review of the literature, 11 preliminary quality indicators were developed and then reviewed and refined by an initial feasibility panel of community and academic

Development of quality indicators for women with urinary incontinence.

AIMS: To develop a means to measure the quality of care provided to women treated for urinary incontinence (UI) through the development of quality-of-care indicators (QIs). METHODS: We performed an extensive literature review to develop a set of potential quality indicators for the management of UI. QIs were modeled after those previously described in the Assessing the Care of Vulnerable Elders (ACOVE) project. Nine experts ranked the indicators on a nine-point scale for both validity and feasibility. We analyzed preliminary rankings of each indicator using the RAND Appropriateness Method. A

Computer-Interpretable Quality Indicators for Intensive Care Medicine: Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Quality indicators (QIs) can help assess intensive care quality, identify potential for improvement, and ultimately enhance patient outcomes. Therefore, the German Interdisciplinary Association of Critical Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) has developed QIs for intensive care medicine. However, variability in how these are technically implemented across health care facilities currently limits their comparability. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to develop unambiguous computer-interpretable representations of the DIVI QIs for intensive care medicine using Fast Healthcare Intero

An automated, workload-adjusted framework for continuous quality assessment in clinical radiation oncology.

BACKGROUND: Quality assessment in radiation oncology is essential to ensure safe, timely, and effective care. Although multiple quality indicators have been proposed, their routine implementation is often limited by heterogeneous definitions, manual data collection, and the lack of adjustment for clinical workload and treatment complexity. METHODS: Within a national quality initiative, a structured revision of previously proposed quality indicators was performed. A survey among heads of Radiation Oncology departments was conducted to assess the relevance, feasibility, and management value of

Co-Producing Peritoneal Dialysis Nursing Sensitive Indicators for Quality Care: A Multinational Consensus Building Design.

BACKGROUND: Nursing sensitive indicators are a way of measuring aspects of patient care that are most affected by the actions of the nurse. Despite the existence of nursing sensitive indicators, these are largely not suitable to measure peritoneal dialysis nursing practice. OBJECTIVE: This project aimed to co-develop a set of peritoneal dialysis nursing-sensitive indicators. DESIGN: Informed by the Donabedian quality framework (structure, process, outcome), a multinational co-production consensus design was used. PARTICIPANTS AND MEASUREMENTS: First, an expert panel of seven professionals p

Reconsidering how we define quality: insights from the co-development of an actionable definition of oral healthcare quality, mntion.

BACKGROUND: The burden of oral diseases on society remains relevant as vulnerable groups lack accessibility to oral healthcare and it is expensive on a societal scale. While there is renewed political will from the UN to expand Universal Health Coverage to oral health, quality issues remain. Solving such complex systematic problems requires coherent efforts that span multiple stakeholders and sectors. The co-development of a definition of oral healthcare quality serves as a key enabler for quality improvement interventions as it facilitates collective understanding and normative directionality
