The contribution of intermolecular spin interactions to the London dispersion forces between chiral molecules.

Dispersion interactions are one of the components of van der Waals (vdW) forces that play a key role in the understanding of intermolecular interactions in many physical, chemical, and biological processes. The theory of dispersion forces was developed by London in the early years of quantum mechanics. However, it was only in the 1960s that it was recognized that for molecules lacking an inversion center, such as chiral and helical molecules, there are chirality-sensitive corrections to the dispersion forces proportional to the rotatory power known from the theory of circular dichroism and wit

Pyrolysis of tert-butyl tert-butanethiosulfinate, t-BuS(O)St-Bu: a computational perspective of the decomposition pathways.

A systematic theoretical study has been performed on the low pressure thermal decomposition pathways of t-BuS(O)St-Bu using the CCSD(T)/cc-pV(D+d)Z//B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p), CCSD(T)/cc-pV(D+d)Z//PBEPBE/6-311++G(2d,2p), and G3B3 level of theories. Rate constants for the unimolecular decomposition pathways are calculated using Rice−Ramsperger−Kassel−Marcus (RRKM) theory. On the basis of the experimental observation and theoretical predictions, the pyrolysis channels are considered as primary and secondary pyrolysis reactions. The primary decomposition via a five-membered transition state leads to

Nonlocal neurology: beyond localization to holonomy.

The concept of local pathology has long served neurology admirably. Relevant models include self-organizing nonlinear brain dynamics, global workspace and dynamic core theories. However such models are inconsistent with certain clinical phenomena found in Charles Bonnet syndrome, disjunctive agnosia and schizophrenia, where there is disunity of content within the unity of consciousness. This is contrasted with the split-brain case where there is disunity of content and disunity of consciousnesses. The development of quantum brain theory with it nonlocal mechanisms under the law of the whole ("

Theory of coherent resonance energy transfer.

A theory of coherent resonance energy transfer is developed combining the polaron transformation and a time-local quantum master equation formulation, which is valid for arbitrary spectral densities including common modes. The theory contains inhomogeneous terms accounting for nonequilibrium initial preparation effects and elucidates how quantum coherence and nonequilibrium effects manifest themselves in the coherent energy transfer dynamics beyond the weak resonance coupling limit of the Forster and Dexter (FD) theory. Numerical tests show that quantum coherence can cause significant changes

Intermolecular-Type Conical Intersections in Benzene Dimer.

The equilibrium and conical intersection geometries of the benzene dimer were computed in the framework of the conventional, linear-response time-dependent and spin-flipped time-dependent density functional theories (known as DFT, TDDFT and SF-TDDFT) as well as using the multiconfigurational complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method considering the minimally augmented def2-TZVPP and the 6-31G(d,p) basis sets. It was found that the stacking distance between the benzene monomers decreases by about 0.5 Å in the first electronic excited state, due to the stronger intermolecular i

Quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics studies on excited state decay pathways of 5-azacytosine in aqueous solution.

In this work, we have used the QM(CASPT2//CASSCF)/MM approach to study the photophysical properties and relaxation mechanism of 5-azacytosine (5-AC) in aqueous solution. Based on the relevant minimum-energy structures and intersection structures, and excited-state decay paths in the S1, S2, T1, T2, and S0 states, several feasible excited-state nonradiative decay channels from the initially populated S2(ππ*) state are proposed. Two major channels are singlet-mediated nonradiative pathways, in which the S2 system will internally convert (IC) to the S0 state directly or mediated by the 1nπ* state

Unprecedented {dz2-CuIIO4}⋯π-hole interactions: the case of a cocrystal of a Cu(II) bis-β-diketonate complex with 1,4-diiodotetrafluoro-benzene.

Cocrystallization of a bis[1-(4-pyridyl)butane-1,3-dionato]copper(II) (1) complex and 1,4-diiodoperfluorobenzene in the presence of pyridine yields a 1 : 1 cocrystal where both the σ and π-holes of 1,4-diiodoperfluorobenzene play a role. The crystal structure shows short arene CuO4⋯π-hole stacking contacts, where the {dz2-CuIIO4} moiety functions as an integrated five-center π-hole acceptor. DFT calculations combined with quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules and noncovalent interaction plot analyses corroborated the structure-defining role of the {dz2-CuIIO4}⋯π-hole contacts.

Quantum process tomography quantifies coherence transfer dynamics in vibrational exciton.

Quantum coherence has been a subject of great interest in many scientific disciplines. However, detailed characterization of the quantum coherence in molecular systems, especially its transfer and relaxation mechanisms, still remains a major challenge. The difficulties arise in part because the spectroscopic signatures of the coherence transfer are typically overwhelmed by other excitation-relaxation processes. We use quantum process tomography (QPT) via two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy to quantify the rate of the elusive coherence transfer between two vibrational exciton states. QPT retr

Collective excitations in quantum gravity condensates.

A central open problem in quantum gravity is to understand how continuum spacetime emerges from quantum-geometric degrees of freedom in a background-independent setting. A many-body perspective suggests that spacetime emerges as a hydrodynamic phase of many atoms of quantum geometry. This idea underlies several approaches to quantum gravity, and it has been explicitly realised in the group field theory formalism. However, quantum fluctuations beyond the mean-field regime remain largely unexplored. We fill this gap by importing Bogolyubov theory to quantum gravity condensates, showing that lead

Relaxation effects in cell microtubule under the influence of an external electric field: The mean field approximation.

The quantum relaxation processes in the microtubule dipole system under the action of an external electric field have been studied. The study is based on the Born-Markov equation. Tubulins dipole-dipole interaction and the internal dynamics of the dipole system that is determined by the quantum tunneling effect in the double potential well is taken into account. A system of differential equations defining the relaxation processes in a microtubule consisting of 676 tubulins is obtained. It was shown that the relaxation nature strongly depends on the magnitude of the dipole-dipole interaction, t

Multiconfiguration Pair-Density Functional Theory Calculations of Iron(II) Porphyrin: Effects of Hybrid Pair-Density Functionals and Expanded RAS and DMRG Active Spaces on Spin-State Orderings.

Iron(II) porphyrins play critical roles in enzymes and synthetic catalysts. Computationally determining the spin-state ordering for even the unsubstituted iron(II) porphyrin (FeP) is challenging due to its large size. Multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MC-PDFT), a method capable of accurately capturing correlation with lower cost than comparably accurate methods, was previously used to predict a triplet ground state for FeP across a wide range of active spaces up to (34e, 35o). The purpose of this present MC-PDFT study is to determine the effects of including nonlocal exchange

Mechanisms of Hypomagnetic Field Biological Effects: Quantum Rotator Versus Radical Pair.

The radical pair mechanism (RPM) struggles to explain the biological effects of weak magnetic fields due to rapid spin decoherence. To address this, we propose a mechanism based on the quantum dynamics of a sub-nanometric (<0.5 nm) molecular rotator modeling an amino acid residue within a biosynthesizing enzyme. Using the Liouville-von Neumann equation with chemical kinetics and phenomenological decoherence, we show that MF effects arise from modulation of the rotator's quantum interference pattern rather than from spin prohibition. Our results demonstrate that effects reaching several tens of

Standardized quantum transistor block enables differentiable learning on gait dynamics.

We introduce the Quantum Transistor (QT), a standardized variational quantum building block inspired by the operating-point and gain semantics of classical transistors. The QT is specified as a two-qubit template (gate g, channel t), but the experiments reported here instantiate the non-entangling special case in which g is deterministically prepared in [Formula: see text] and is not reused; consequently, the controlled-[Formula: see text] bias reduces to an unconditional single-qubit [Formula: see text] on the channel qubit t. In this instantiation the QT implements an analytically tractable,

On the functional significance of quantum effects at subneuronal scales.

This paper develops a constraint based hypothesis from established physics and published experimental measurements. De Broglie's relation predicts that electronic quantum effects become part of the physical regime when functional structures approach nanometer dimensions. The semiconductor industry provides a test case, as reliable classical switching at few nanometer scales requires architectural intervention biological systems lack. Microtubule tryptophan networks operate at 1 to 2 nm spacing and exhibit energy migration with a 6.6 nm diffusion length that classical Förster theory cannot acco

Understanding the underlying language code that governs the π-π non-covalent interactions between proteins and DNA.

Protein–nucleic acid interactions are crucial for transferring biological information and rely on sequence-specific recognition. Here, we present our theoretical analysis of the parallel alignment of aromatic coupling between bases and the benzene rings found in three naturally occurring aromatic amino acids. Using a model of electron pairs in oscillatory resonant quantum states, the most stable geometry of the dimer involves positioning the benzene ring on one side of the base via parallel displacement. This occurs when the [Formula: see text] orbitals of N3 and C2 in the purines interact wit

Separable spectral and conformational channels in proteins: A quantum-like view of dual information encoding.

The aim of this paper is to test whether biological macromolecules carry information through two distinct, separable channels. The conformational channel (C-channel), governed by three-dimensional structure and the Coulomb potential, sets binding geometry, catalysis, and stability. The spectral channel (S-channel), the one-dimensional electron-ion interaction potential (EIIP) profile and its characteristic frequency fRRM, is proposed to mediate resonant molecular recognition. In quantum information biology, recognition - a protein selecting a partner among thousands of candidates - is modelled

A first-principles investigation of bio-ion-induced magnetic modulation in defect-engineered Janus WSSe monolayers: toward quantum neuromorphic health sensing for brain-inspired diagnostics.

The emulation of synaptic functionality using two-dimensional (2D) quantum materials offers a promising route toward non-invasive, brain-inspired diagnostic technologies. In this work, we employ first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate ion-induced magnetic modulation in pristine and defect-engineered Janus WSSe monolayers. We show that biologically relevant ions such as Ca2+, Na+, and Cl- induce distinct and ion-specific changes in the magnetic moment. This behaviour arises from the intrinsic out-of-plane asymmetry of Janus WSSe combined with defect-induced

TD-DFT analysis of excitation of the closed-form spironaphthopyran in methanol solution: The contribution of vibronic transitions and intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

A set of forty hybrid functionals, combined with a 6-31++G(d,p) basis set and an IEFPCM solvent description, was applied to calculate the S0→S1 excitation of the spironaphthopyran (SNP) photochromic compound. None of the hybrid functionals resulted in Cspiro-O bond cleavage upon optimization of the S1 excited state of the SNP, in contrast to the spiropyran BIPS which we studied earlier. At the same time, the deformations of the SNP during excitation turned out to be very small (in contrast to those for BIPS) which made it possible to calculate its vibronic absorption spectrum. Entangled and sequential quantum protocols with dephasing.

Sequences of commuting quantum operators can be parallelized using entanglement. This transformation is behind some optimal quantum metrology protocols and recent results on quantum circuit complexity. We show that dephasing quantum maps in arbitrary dimension can also be parallelized. This implies that for general dephasing noise the protocol with entanglement is not more fragile than the corresponding sequential protocol and, conversely, the sequential protocol is not less effective than the entangled one. We derive this result using tensor networks. Furthermore, we only use transformations

Dispersion Interactions in Exciton-Localized States. Theory and Applications to π-π* and n-π* Excited States.

We address the problem of intermolecular interaction energy calculations in molecular complexes with localized excitons. Our focus is on the correct representation of the dispersion energy. We derive an extended Casimir-Polder formula for direct computation of this contribution through second order in the intermolecular interaction operator V̂. An alternative formula, accurate to infinite order in V̂, is derived within the framework of the adiabatic connection (AC) theory. We also propose a new parametrization of the VV10 nonlocal correlation density functional, so that it corrects the CASSCF
