We report a novel procedure to synthesize a new type of water separation membrane using graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets such that water can flow through the nanochannels between GO layers while unwanted solutes are rejected by size exclusion and charge effects. The GO membrane was made via layer-by-layer deposition of GO nanosheets, which were cross-linked by 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride, on a polydopamine-coated polysulfone support. The cross-linking not only provided the stacked GO nanosheets with the necessary stability to overcome their inherent dispensability in water environment b

Current methods for enzymatic activity assays achieve high sensitivity but require a long assay time, restricting their application in rapid clinical diagnostics. Herein, an ultrarapid and ultrasensitive dual-mode biosensing platform was developed by integrating a high-frequency quartz crystal microbalance (HFQCM, 100 MHz) with a photocurrent polarity switching photoelectrochemical (PEC) strategy, based on Cu2+-triggered sodium alginate (SA) gelation. The platform adopted a universal design where caspase-3 served as a model enzyme to demonstrate its analytical performance. First, a magnetic pr

In this paper we present a simple method allowing for stable laccase immobilization on various conducting surfaces that retains the activity of the enzyme. The strategy for laccase immobilization presented in this paper relies on Zr(4+) ion coordination chemistry that involves -COO- terminal groups present on the protein. Using a host of techniques, including surface plasmon resonance (SPR), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) gravimetry, atomic force microscopy (AFM), surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), resonance Raman scattering (RR) and electrochemical techniques, we show that laccase b

As volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a major group of air pollutants, development of materials for efficient adsorption and removal of VOCs is of great significance in both environmental and analytical sciences. Here we report metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101 for the effective adsorption of VOCs at atmospheric pressure. A simple device was designed for quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and six VOCs with various functional groups and polarities, i.e., n-hexane, toluene, methanol, butanone, dichloromethane, and n-butylamine, were chosen as targets to probe the adsorption properties o

Continuous in vivo monitoring of small molecule biomarkers requires biosensors with reversibility, sensitivity in physiologically relevant ranges, and biological stability. Leveraging the real-time, label-free detection capability of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technology, a molecularly responsive hydrogel film is introduced to enhance small molecule sensitivity. This advanced biosensing platform utilizes split-aptamer-cross-linked hydrogels (aptagels) engineered using 8-arm poly(ethylene glycol) macromers, capable of directly and reversibly detecting vancomycin. Investigation through SPR

Nanobiotechnologies, from the convergence of nanotechnology and molecular biology and postgenomics medicine, play a major role in the field of public health. This overview summarizes the potentiality of piezoelectric sensors, and in particular, of quartz-crystal microbalance (QCM), a physical nanogram-sensitive device. QCM enables the rapid, real time, on-site detection of pathogens with an enormous burden in public health, such as influenza and other respiratory viruses, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and drug-resistant bacteria, among others. Further, it allows to detect food allergens, food-borne

The rapid detection of Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax disease, has gained much attention since the anthrax spore bioterrorism attacks in the United States in 2001. In this work, a DNA probe functionalized quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) biosensor was developed to detect B. anthracis based on the recognition of its specific DNA sequences, i.e., the 168 bp fragment of the Ba813 gene in chromosomes and the 340 bp fragment of the pag gene in plasmid pXO1. A thiol DNA probe was immobilized onto the QCM gold surface through self-assembly via Au-S bond formation to hybridize wit

Interfacial stress encountered by biopharmaceuticals is often opposed by employing surfactants in their formulations. Surfactants protect proteins from this stress by either shielding the interface or displacing adsorbed proteins. Most previous studies were dedicated to the air-liquid interface, and to characterize monoclonal antibodies or non-pharmaceutically relevant proteins in combination with established surfactants (polysorbates and poloxamer 188). Herein, we employ quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) and tensiometry to investigate the adsorption behavior of established

Carbon dioxide (CO2) detection is indispensable for monitoring climate change, ensuring air quality, managing industrial processes, and safeguarding human health. Nevertheless, the chemical inertness and stability of CO2 pose significant challenges in advancing detection technologies in practical applications. In order to overcome these challenges, nanoscale MOF-74 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) functionalized with alkali metals (Li, Na, and K) have been synthesized for the effective detection of the CO2 gas. The sensing results indicate that the Li-Mg-MOF-74-based quartz crystal microbalance

A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) can be used to evaluate the physical properties of cells exposed to anticancer drugs. Mass-sensing techniques on electrodes detect subtle changes in adherent cells during drug treatment, providing insights into physiological, biochemical, and morphological events from a physical perspective. Although these methods have been established in many studies using living cells, their drug responses remain associated with cell viability. This study aimed to measure QCM response by simultaneously monitoring non-viable cell images. Treatment with mitomycin C (MMC) cau

In this study, multiple particle binding-liposomes (MPB-Lips), encapsulating the luminophore tris(2',2-bipyridyl)ruthenium (II) complex ([Ru(bpy)3]2+), were developed as an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signal amplifier and were applied to detect the model analyte streptavidin (SA) using the indirect competitive ECL method. The MPB-Lips were prepared by mixing various ratios of two different liposomes-one containing a phospholipid with a primary amine group and a biotinyl group (BIO/NH2-Lip) and one containing a phospholipid with an N-hydroxysuccinimide group (NHS-Lip) to allow binding betwee

Amyloid fibrils are filamentous aggregates of peptides and proteins implicated in a range of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. It has been known almost since their discovery that these β-sheet-rich proteinacious assemblies bind a range of specific dyes that, combined with other biophysical techniques, are convenient probes of the process of amyloid fibril formation. Two prominent examples of such dyes are Congo red (CR) and Thioflavin T (ThT). It has been reported that in addition to having a diagnostic role, CR is an inhibitor of the formation of amyloi

Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is a versatile and sensitive technique for monitoring small interfacial mass changes through variations in the resonance frequency of a piezoelectric quartz crystal. Photocatalytic processes, particularly interfacial degradation and photoreduction, can therefore be monitored in situ and in real-time using QCM. This review summarizes QCM-based photocatalytic studies reported over the past two decades, covering both fundamental and application-oriented investigations involving a range of photocatalytic materials and organic or inorganic species. A structured lit

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a serious side effect that occurs in patients undergoing heparin therapy. The known risk factor is the presence of antibodies created against platelet factor 4 and heparin complexes (PF4/heparin) in the blood, which activate platelet Fc receptors (FcγRIIA). Although immunoassays have been developed for HIT diagnosis, their specificity remains low (∼50%) due to the binding of nonpathogenic antibodies to the same antigen (PF4/heparin). As a result, a lack of rapid, highly sensitive, and selective diagnostic tests poses challenges for HIT treatment. In th

Monoclonal antibodies, thanks to their high affinity and specificity for their antigen targets, are increasingly used as highly selective therapeutics. While antigen expression and clustering at the cell surface critically influence therapeutic activity, quantifying these effects remains challenging due to the lack of well-defined in vitro platforms that enable precise control over antigen spatial organization and density. Surface-based affinity techniques, therefore, provide a powerful approach to address this challenge. For example, the monoclonal antibody rituximab (RTX) recognizes the huma

The utilization of biomimetic membranes supported by advanced self-assembled monolayers is gaining attraction as a promising sensing tool. Biomimetic membranes offer exceptional biocompatibility and adsorption capacity upon degradation, transcending their role as mere research instruments to open new avenues in biosensing. This study focused on anchoring a sparsely tethered bilayer lipid membrane onto a self-assembled monolayer composed of a biodegradable polymer, functionalized with poly(ethylene glycol)-cholesterol moieties, for lipid membrane integration. Real-time monitoring via quartz cry

A consistent part of gas sensor research activities aims to improve sensing performances by synthesizing new sensing materials, improving the selection of elements in arrays, and optimizing the feature extraction and classification algorithms. This paper combines most of these aspects to confer selectivity to a low-selectivity sensor by using feature extraction algorithms applied to the sensor response kinetics. Several algorithms were employed to represent the kinetic behavior of the sensor response during the adsorption and desorption phases. In detail, we utilized fitting functions, dynamic

The interest in solid-supported biomimetic membranes stems from their utility in nanotechnology and biosensing. In particular, supported lipid vesicles (SLVs) have become popular in both fundamental biophysical studies and pharmaceutical screening applications. It is thus essential to gain information on the structural properties and phase behavior of SLVs. Here we report on a study on the influence of cholesterol on the phase behavior of SLVs of saturated phospholipids by using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, a label-free and nonintrusive surface-sensitive technique.

Functionalisation of poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (a responsive methacrylate) with light-activatable 2-ureido-4-pyrimidone units allows a supramolecular hydrogel to be obtained that combines temperature, light and pH response with self-healing properties. Whereas the self-healing properties of this system were described previously, this report focuses on its response to different external stimuli, which is studied by quartz crystal microbalance analysis of thin films of the material. Reversible collapse with increasing temperature, reversible swelling with decreasing pH and irreve
