Raman spectroscopy resolves nitrogen-driven metabolic acclimation to urban air pollution in Quercus ilex.

Urban air pollution may alter plant metabolism long before visible damage becomes apparent. Raman spectroscopy was evaluated as a rapid, non-destructive approach to resolve these biochemical adjustments. Mature Quercus ilex L. trees were sampled along a well-defined pollution gradient in Tuscany (Italy), spanning high, intermediate, and low levels of NO₂ and PM₁₀. Leaf Raman spectra revealed coordinated modulation of primary and secondary metabolism. Pigment-related bands (chlorophylls and carotenoids) increased toward the most polluted site, while inducible flavonoid signals showed site-depen

Anti-Acne Potential of Quercus salicina Extract: Inhibition of Cutibacterium acnes Growth and Virulence.

Acne vulgaris is a prevalent inflammatory skin disorder mediated by Cutibacterium acnes, a key etiological factor. In this study, the anti-acne properties of the ethyl acetate fraction of Quercus salicina Blume (QsB-EE) against C. acnes were investigated. The QsB-EE fraction was separated into subfractions (E1-E6) using preparative HPLC. Antimicrobial and anti-virulence activities were evaluated via bacterial growth, biofilm, and lipase activity assays. Virulence gene expression was assessed using qRT-PCR, and bioactive compounds were identified by LC-MS/MS. The QsB-EE demonstrated significant

Preliminary Evaluation of Historical used Pesticides in Quercus robur Wood in Belgium: a Negative Finding.

Historically used pesticides poses a threat to biodiversity while their release pathways remain unclear. Trees could be a potential release source due to their long lifespan. This study examined 38 samples to assess pesticide concentrations in pedunculate oak from Belgium. Low concentrations of procymidone were detected in two samples from one stump. Our findings suggest that accumulations of historically used pesticides in pedunculate oaks within forests are improbable. We conclude that leaving dead wood poses no risks for pesticide release to the environment. However, further research involv

Development of a Micropropagation Protocol for the Ex Situ Conservation of Nuttall's Scrub Oak (Quercus dumosa).

Worldwide, oak species are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, pathogens, and changing fire regimes. Ex situ conservation through tissue culture may protect the remaining genetic diversity of Quercus dumosa, or the coastal sage scrub oak, from further loss. We designed three basal salt formulations based on the mineral composition of shoot tips and first leaves from mature Q. dumosa and explored carbohydrate source, stress-mitigating compounds, and plant growth regulator concentrations to develop a method of cultivating many Q. dumosa culture lines in vitro. All three novel basal s

Bioassay-Guided Fractionation of Acetone and Methanol Extracts of Quercus infectoria Galls with Antimalarial Properties.

The antimalarial properties of crude extracts from Quercus infectoria galls were investigated through bioassay-guided fractionation. Acetone (QIA) and methanol (QIM) crude extracts have been reported to have promising antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum (3D7 strain). These extracts were subjected to fractionation using automated preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (prep-HPLC) to identify the most active fractions. Nine fractions were isolated from each extract, of which the fractions QIA11 and QIM16 showed antimalarial activity, with IC50 values of 17.65 ± 1.82 μ

Particulate matter on foliage of Betula pendula, Quercus robur, and Tilia cordata: deposition and ecophysiology.

Trees in urban and industrial areas significantly help to limit the amount of particulate matter (PM) suspended in the air, but PM has a negative impact on their life. The amount of PM gathered on leaves depends on quantity, size, and morphology of leaves and can also be increased by the presence of epicuticular waxes, in which PM can become stuck or immersed. In this study, we determined the ability of PM to accumulate on leaves in relation to the species of tree and PM source. We tested saplings of three common European tree species (Betula pendula, Quercus robur, and Tilia cordata) by exper

Analysis of the Active Constituents and Evaluation of the Biological Effects of Quercus acuta Thunb. (Fagaceae) Extracts.

We evaluated the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of hexnane, ethyl acetate, acetone, methanol, ethanol, and water extracts of the Quercus acuta leaf. The antioxidant properties were evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity, reducing power, and total phenolic content. Antibacterial activity was assessed against general infectious pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant clinical isolates. The methanolic extract showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity and total phenolic content, while the reducing power was the highest in the water ex

Shoot development and extension of Quercus serrata saplings in response to insect damage and nutrient conditions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plants have the ability to compensate for damage caused by herbivores. This is important to plant growth, because a plant cannot always avoid damage, even if it has developed defence mechanisms against herbivores. In previous work, we elucidated the herbivory-induced compensatory response of Quercus (at both the individual shoot and whole sapling levels) in both low- and high-nutrient conditions throughout one growing season. In this study, we determine how the compensatory growth of Quercus serrata saplings is achieved at different nutrient levels. METHODS: Quercus serra

Identification of extremely low-terpene-emitting variants from an urban greening tree species Quercus myrsinifolia.

Terpene-emitting plants may risk air quality and agricultural yields by increasing tropospheric ozone with nitrogen oxides. However, the number of non- or low-terpene-emitting species is limited, leading to a potential trade-off in species diversity when air quality considerations are prioritized for afforestation and urban greening. To expand the available choices, developing non- or extremely low-terpene-emitting cultivars from species with high-terpene emissions could be a feasible solution. In this study, we observed terpene emissions from multiple individuals of a common afforestation tre

Quercus wutaishanica shrub affects temperate forest community composition and soil properties under different restoration stage.

Quercus wutaishanica is the dominant tree species in the natural ecosystem restoration of temperate forests in China, and it plays an active role in maintaining ecological balance. However, little is known about how ecosystem versatility develops during the restoration of forest ecosystems dominated by Q. wutaishanica. In this study, we investigated the species composition of the Q. wutaishanica community, soil nutrients, and their functional traits at various restoration stages, and comprehensively analyzed the correlations among them. At the early stage of restoration (10 years of restoratio

Variation among populations of Quercus macrocarpa in a reciprocal transplant experiment across a latitudinal gradient.

Ongoing climate change will negatively impact tree populations unless they are able to acclimate to the changes in their local environment. Effective planning for climate adaptation management requires an understanding of the current state of local adaptation and physiological performance to assess whether populations are at risk of local extinction, to determine if seed movement is appropriate, and to select appropriate seed sources if intervention is needed. We established a new reciprocal transplant experiment (Adaptation to Climate and Environment [ACE]) across a latitudinal gradient in No

Formulation, characterization of Quercus infectoria (Olivier) emulsions, and in vitro, in vivo evaluation as cosmeceutical formulation.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological properties of Quercus infectoria Olivier (galls) have been determined to be astringent, antidiabetic, antipyretic, anti-tremor, local anesthetic, and anti-parkinsonism. The galls of Quercus infectoria have been used for millennia in traditional oriental medicine in Asian nations to treat inflammatory illnesses. AIMS: The study's objective was to create a Quercus infectoria Olivier gall extract in stable water in oil (w/o) emulsion and to check its effects on the mechanical properties of skin and antiaging effects. METHOD: The galls were macerated in absolute metha

Function of defensive volatiles in pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) is tricked by the moth Tortrix viridana.

The indirect defences of plants are comprised of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) that among other things attract the natural enemies of insects. However, the actual extent of the benefits of HIPV emissions in complex co-evolved plant-herbivore systems is only poorly understood. The observation that a few Quercus robur L. trees constantly tolerated (T-oaks) infestation by a major pest of oaks (Tortrix viridana L.), compared with heavily defoliated trees (susceptible: S-oaks), lead us to a combined biochemical and behavioural study. We used these evidently different phenotypes to analy

Protective effects of Quercus brantii fruit extract against oxytetracycline-induced intestinal injury in zebrafish larvae.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is widely used as a vertebrate model to study intestinal inflammation due to structural and functional similarities of its gastrointestinal tract to mammals. Oxytetracycline (OTC), a commonly used antibiotic in aquaculture, can accumulate in aquatic organisms and disrupt gut homeostasis, inducing oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. This study evaluated the protective effects of hydroalcoholic Quercus brantii fruit extract against OTC-induced intestinal injury in zebrafish larvae. A total of 144 three-day-old larvae were randomly assigned to four experimental gr

Green-synthesized quantum dots from quercus brantii for infected polymicrobial wound healing: mechanisms and biocompatibility.

BACKGROUND: The rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has created an urgent need for alternative therapies, particularly against biofilm-driven polymicrobial wound infections. Although green-synthesized nanoparticles have emerged as promising candidates, many studies lack rigorous validation of their quantum properties, fail to clarify mechanisms of action, and omit essential cytotoxicity profiling in human cells. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize silver (Ag), copper (Cu), and zinc oxide (ZnO) quantum dots (QDs) using Quercus brantii acorn extract, confirm quantum confinement effects, and evaluate th

Bacterial Communities Associated With Acute Oak Decline of Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea) in Southern Sweden.

Acute oak decline (AOD) is a rapidly progressing disease affecting various oak species (Quercus spp.). Recent studies have shown that AOD is associated with a consortium of Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacteria (e.g., in Enterobacterales) in the United Kingdom and continental Europe. However, there is limited information on the bacterial contributions and key genera associated with oak diseases and broadleaf forest ecosystems in Nordic countries. The primary objective of this brief study was to collect the first data on the bark microbiomes of symptomatic, declining sessile oaks (Q.

Successful In Vitro Shoot Multiplication of Quercus robur L. Trees Aged up to 800 Years.

The conservation of the genetic resources of old trees is crucial to their ecological role but is extremely difficult, especially for oak species (Quercus spp.) displaying recalcitrance in seed and vegetative propagation methods. Our study aimed to assess the regenerative potential of Quercus robur trees of different ages (up to 800 years) during micropropagation. We also aimed to determine how in vitro conditions can influence in vitro regeneration responses. Lignified branches collected from 67 selected trees were cultivated ex vitro in culture pots at 25 °C to obtain epicormic shoots (expla

Seasonal variation of leaf ecophysiological traits within the canopy of Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. trees.

Facing contrasting light regimes during a vegetation season and depending on canopy position, physiological plasticity of leaves is vital for tree species to sustain the optimal ratio between the benefit of carbon assimilation and the costs of photoprotection in a given leaf. We tested the seasonal adjustment of sun and shade leaf photochemistry of sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) to changing light environments by parallel investigation of the meteorological conditions, photosynthetic pigment content, PSII quantum efficiency and excitation energy quenching. Sun and shade leaves got

Free radical scavenging and hepatoprotective actions of Quercus aliena acorn extract against CCl4-induced liver.

In the present study, we investigated the protective effect of Quercus aliena acorn extracts against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats, and the mechanism underlying the protective effects. Aqueous extracts of Quercus aliena acorn had higher superoxide radical scavenging activity than other types of extracts. The Quercus aliena acorn extracts displayed dose-dependent superoxide radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 4.92 microg/ml), as assayed by the electron spin resonance (ESR) spin-trapping technique. Pretreatment with Quercus aliena acorn extracts reduced the increase in serum aspartate amin
