Molecular Approach to Identifying Three Closely Related Slug Species of the genus Deroceras (Gastropoda: Eupulmonata: Agriolimacidae).

Some species of slugs belonging to the genus Deroceras are invasive and cause severe agricultural damage. Despite extensive knowledge about their invasiveness, data on the molecular differentiation of these morphologically similar species are lacking. Here we present a molecular approach to identifying three closely related species of the genus Deroceras-D. agreste (L., 1758), D. reticulatum (O. F. Müller, 1774) and D. turcicum (Simroth, 1894) (Gastropoda: Eupulmonata: Agriolimacidae)-based on sequences of multiple molecular markers: cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), cytochrome b (cyt-b),

U8 variants on the brain: a small nucleolar RNA and human disease.

Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are non-coding RNAs vital for ribosomal RNA (rRNA) maturation. The U8 snoRNA, encoded by the SNORD118 gene in humans, is an atypical C/D box snoRNA as it promotes rRNA cleavage rather than 2'-O-methylation and is unique to vertebrates. The U8 snoRNA is critical for cleavage events that produce the mature 5.8S and 28S rRNAs of the large ribosomal subunit. Unexpectedly, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the SNORD118 gene were recently found causal to the neurodegenerative disease leukoencephalopathy, brain calcifications, and cysts (LCC; aka Labrune syndrom

Phylogenetic position of Atriophallophorus minutus (Trematoda: Microphallidae), the type-species of the genus Atriophallophorus Deblock & Rosé, 1964, based on partial 28S rDNA gene sequence.

We found metacercariae of a microphallid trematode Atriophallophorus minutus in freshwater snails Bithynia tentaculata. In this study, we provide a morphological description of whole-mount specimens and semi-thin sections of experimentally grown adults of this species. Our morphological examination supports the idea that the adults of Atriophallophorus spp. have a ventral sucker with a sinistral interruption of the outer edge. In the 28S rDNA gene-based phylogenetic analyses, our specimens of A. minutus were grouped into Atriophallophorus spp. clade, as a sister taxon to Atriophallophorus wint

Possible mechanism of action of antiviral proteins from the leaves of Chenopodium album L.

Antiviral proteins (AVPs) named CAP-I and CAP-II purified from the leaves of Chenopodium album cv Pusa Bathua-1 induced systemic resistance against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and sunnhemp rosette virus (SRV) in both hypersensitive as well as systemic hosts. An increased accumulation of two polypeptides (approximately 17 kDa and approximately 26 kDa) was observed in untreated upper leaves of Cyamopsis tetragonoloba plants whose basal leaves were treated with CAP-I/CAP-II. Both AVPs exhibited ribosomal RNA N-glycosidase activity on 28S rRNA of tobacco leaves and also caused in vitro degradation

Morphological and molecular data establishes Clinostomum dolichorchum n. sp. (Digenea: Clinostomidae) in the great blue heron Ardea herodias L. and American bullfrog Rana catesbeiana Shaw.

Clinostomum is a cosmopolitan genus of trematodes that infect piscivorous birds, freshwater molluscs, freshwater fish and amphibians. Herein, a novel species of Clinostomum is described based on morphological and molecular data from an adult in the oral cavity of the great blue heron Ardea herodias and metacercariae collected from the gills and skin of American bullfrog tadpoles Rana catesbeiana. The novel species shares similar qualitative and quantitative morphological features with a congener, Clinostomum marginatum, which has overlap in host and geographic distribution. Molecular and morphological characterization of Bolbosoma balaenae (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae), a neglected intestinal parasite of the fin whale Balaenoptera physalus.

Post-mortem examination of a fin whale Balaenoptera physalus stranded in the Mediterranean Sea led to the finding of Bolbosoma balaenae for the first time in this basin. In this work, we describe new structural characteristics of this parasite using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy approaches. Moreover, the molecular and phylogenetic data as inferred from both ribosomal RNA 18S-28S and the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 (cox1) for adult specimens of B. balaenae are also reported for the first time. Details of the surface topography such as proboscis's hooks,

Morphological and molecular differentiation of Staphylocystis clydesengeri n. sp. (Cestoda, Hymenolepididae) from the vagrant shrew, Sorex vagrans (Soricomorpha, Soricidae), in North America.

Staphylocystis clydesengeri n. sp. is described from shrews Sorex vagrans in Montana and Washington, United States. It differs from the only previously known North American representative of the genus, S. schilleri, in having more numerous (37-42 vs. 22-30) and larger (39-44 microm vs. 27-30 microm) rostellar hooks. The two species also differ in several other important characters such as relative length of the cirrus pouch, position of gonads and shape of mature proglottides. First record of the invasive American tapeworm Ophiotaenia saphena (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) in the Tokyo daruma pond frog Pelophylax porosus porosus in Japan.

Adult proteocephalid tapeworms of the genus Ophiotaenia (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) were recovered from the endemic Japanese amphibian species, Pelophylax porosus porosus (Amphibia: Ranidae) from Tochigi, Japan. As a result of molecular analyses based on the 28S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I genes, these worms were identified as Ophiotaenia saphena, a species native to North America. Their morphological features were also consistent with those of O. saphena. This species is presumed to have been introduced into Japan with the American bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus (Ranid

Direct activation of ribosome-associated double-stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR) by deoxynivalenol, anisomycin and ricin: a new model for ribotoxic stress response induction.

Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-activated protein kinase (PKR) is a critical upstream mediator of the ribotoxic stress response (RSR) to the trichothecene deoxynivalenol (DON) and other translational inhibitors. Here, we employed HeLa cell lysates to: (1) characterize PKR's interactions with the ribosome and ribosomal RNA (rRNA); (2) demonstrate cell-free activation of ribosomal-associated PKR and (3) integrate these findings in a unified model for RSR. Robust PKR-dependent RSR was initially confirmed in intact cells. PKR basally associated with 40S, 60S, 80S and polysome fractions at molar ratios

Molecular characterization of Lamproglena monodi infesting Oreochromis niloticus in Egypt based on 18S and 28S rDNA markers.

This study investigated the molecular, morphological, and pathological characteristics of the parasitic copepod Lamproglena monodi infesting Oreochromis niloticus in Egyptian aquaculture. A total of 273 tilapia were examined from three governorates, with infestation frequencies of 25% in Kafr El-Sheikh, 20% in Giza, and 21.7% in Al-Sharqia. Seasonal frequencies ranged from 13% in summer to 34.3% in autumn. Molecular amplification produced fragments of 1405 bp (18S rDNA) and 737 bp (28S rDNA), and BLAST analysis confirmed their identity as L. monodi with ≥98% similarity to reference sequences.

The discovery of Paratestophis gelicolus gen. nov., sp. nov. from the rainbow water snake, Enhydris enhydris, in Thailand, with systematic update of Echinochasmidae Odhner, 1910.

A new genus and species of trematode, Paratestophis gelicolus gen. nov., sp. nov., is described from the large intestine of the rainbow water snake, Enhydris enhydris, collected from several provinces in southern Thailand. Morphological analyses reveal distinct characteristics that differentiate P. gelicolus gen. nov., sp. nov. from related echinochasmid taxa, specifically its elongated bottle-shaped body, presence of 22 collar spines, parallel testes and parasitism of snakes-features not observed in other echinochasmid genera. Molecular identification of tapeworm infection in a bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops sp., in South Carolina, USA.

A bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops sp., stranded on the coast of South Carolina, USA was found to be heavily infected in its intestine by tapeworms, which we identified molecularly. Sequencing of portions of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and nuclear large subunit ribosomal RNA (28S rRNA) genes showed the cestodes to be Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum, commonly known as a broad tapeworm. Infections of marine mammals by Diphyllobothrium have been previously reported in the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean, but only to genus level. Infection by tapeworms may be rare in dolphins in South C

Different classes of ribonucleic acid isolated from lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.

Purified preparations of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCM virus) contain three classes of RNA. The previously described 18s, 23s, 28s, and 31s RNAs, where the 23s and 31s RNAs are viral-specific, and the 18s and 28s RNAs probably are host RNAs incorporated in the virion. Now, 4s, 5s, and 5.5s RNAs can be isolated as well. Thus five RNAs which migrate by acrylamide gel electrophoresis as ribosome-derived RNA can be isolated from purified LCM virus. This observation further supports the reports that arenaviruses may contain ribosomes. The ribosome-derived RNA can be synthesized both befor

Rejection of the concept of hemiurid genus Pulmovermis (Digenea: Hemiuridae) and other taxonomic propositions: new morphological and molecular data regarding Lecithochirium cyanovitellosum (Coil and Kuntz, 1960) Urabe and Sokolov, comb. nov. (formerly Pulmovermis cyanovitellosus).

Pulmovermis cyanovitellosus Coil and Kuntz, 1960 is a species of hemiurid trematode that localizes in the lung of sea snakes, an unusual trait for this group of parasites. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies based on 28S rRNA gene sequences have shown that this species is closely related to members of the genus Lecithochirium Lühe, 1901. This finding is unexpected given that Pulmovermis Coil and Kuntz, 1960 and Lecithochirium are currently classified in different subfamilies of Hemiuridae (Pulmoverminae Sandars, 1961 vs. Lecithochiriinae Lühe, 1901). To investigate this discrepancy, we condu

Redescription and taxonomic position of Rodentolepis (sensu lato) asymmetrica (Janicki, 1904), with the erection of Kontrimavichusia n. g. (Eucestoda: Hymenolepididae) from arvicoline rodents (Rodentia: Cricetidae).

Rodentolepis (sensu lato) asymmetrica (Janicki, 1904) is redescribed on the basis of materials from Microtus agrestis, Microtus arvalis and Myodes glareolus from Eastern Europe (Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine and the north-eastern part of Russia). A new genus, Kontrimavichusia n. g., is proposed for it based on morphological and molecular evidence. The unique morphological diagnostic characters of this currently monotypic genus include the presence of an armature on the suckers, ventral osmoregulatory canals connected with irregularly spaced transverse anastomoses, an internal se

SARCOCYSTIS INFECTIONS IN RIVER OTTER (LONTRA CANADENSIS) IN MICHIGAN.

Sarcocystis infections are common in the muscles of herbivores but were, until recently, considered relatively rare in carnivores. Little is known of sarcocysts in the muscles of river otters in the United States. In a previous epidemiologic study of Toxoplasma gondii infections in North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) from Michigan in the 2018 and 2019 harvest season, Sarcocystis DNA was found in 34 (27.4%) of 124 otter muscles.
