Do Race, Insurance Status, and Income Factors Impact Pathologic Fracture Presentation and Management?

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic bone disease (MBD) and pathologic fractures (PF) can impact quality of life, functionality, and survival. Understanding the management of PF and access to care and treatment in the U.S. healthcare system can improve patient outcomes, directly impacting treatment eligibility and overall survival. We ask: (1) Do race, income, and insurance status differ between prophylactic stabilization of impending and acute fixation of overt PF, respectively? (2) Are race, income, and insurance status associated with complications in patients with metastatic bone disease? (3) Are race

Risk factors for breast cancer subtypes by race and ethnicity: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer consists of distinct molecular subtypes. Studies have reported differences in risk factor associations with breast cancer subtypes, especially by tumor estrogen receptor (ER) status, but their consistency across racial and ethnic populations has not been comprehensively evaluated. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative, scoping literature review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis, extension for Scoping Reviews to investigate consistencies in associations between 18 breast cancer risk factors (reproductive, anthropometric, lifest

Analysis of Race and Ethnicity, Socioeconomic Factors, and Tooth Decay Among US Children.

IMPORTANCE: While large oral health disparities remain by race and ethnicity among children, the associations of race, ethnicity, and mediating factors with oral health outcomes are poorly characterized. Identifying the pathways that explain these disparities would be critical to inform policies to effectively reduce them. OBJECTIVE: To measure racial and ethnic disparities in the risk of developing tooth decay and quantify relative contributions of factors mediating the observed disparities among US children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study used electronic

K-SADS in context: Testing measurement equivalence across race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic factors.

Rates of youth mental disorders vary across White, Black, and Hispanic youths in the United States. The weak evidence for the generalizability of diagnostic tools significantly challenges the understanding of racial and ethnic differences in mental disorder risks. The Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia is a widely used diagnostic interview. However, its applicability across racial and ethnic groups is questionable. The present study tested the statistical generalizability, or measurement equivalence, of the Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia across

The Changing Epidemiology of Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease: Gender, Race, and Risk Factors.

Cases of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) are increasing at a steady rate in the United States with more patients presenting with alcohol-associated hepatitis and alcohol-associated cirrhosis. While alcohol use has increased across many demographic groups, women are suffering from a greater increase in alcohol use disorder (AUD), and are at a greater risk of ALD due to pathophysiological differences which include absorption of alcohol, first pass metabolism, and hormonal differences. Differences across race have also been found with Native Americans and Hispanics suffering from some of t

Predicting Pathways into Criminal Behavior: The Intersection of Race, Gender, Poverty, Psychological Factors.

Women's incarceration rates have increased dramatically over recent years; with Black women's rates disproportionately and significantly higher than other races. Researchers have attempted to understand this criminal justice involvement disparity, and have suggested two major theoretical pathways Differential Involvement and Differential Selection Theories to explain these racial differences. We use the Differential Involvement Theory as a framework to discuss how the objective experience of economic disadvantage as measured by indicators of structural hardship including educational and employ

Incidence and risk factors for limb fracture in greyhound racing in Western Australia.

Identification of risk factors for race day injury can improve greyhound welfare. Race day fractures are the most significant injury event and have the greatest negative impact on dog welfare and the industry's social license to operate. This study aimed to describe the incidence and risk factors for race-related fractures in greyhounds racing in Western Australia. Electronic extracts describing race level data and race day injuries were provided by Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA). The incidence rate (IR) of fractures for all greyhound race starts in Western Australia from 1 Janua

Risk Factors for Horse Fatality in Thoroughbred Jumps Racing in New Zealand.

The aim of this study was to examine the race-, horse- and jockey-level risk factors for race day fatality in New Zealand Thoroughbred jumps racing using retrospective race day data from the 2011/12 to 2021/22 seasons (n = 8,970 starts). There were 51 race day fatalities resulting in an incidence rate of 5.7 per 1,000 starts (95% C.I. 4.3-7.5). The majority of fatalities were the result of fractures (44/51, 4.9 per 1,000 starts, 95% C.I. 3.7-6.6). Steeplechase and hurdle races had the same incidence of fatal fractures of 4.9 per 1,000 starts (95% C.I. 3.7-6.6, P > .05). Most (70.5%) of the fat

Risk factors for horse falls in New Zealand Thoroughbred jumps racing.

This study aimed to determine the incidence of, and risk factors for race-day horse falls in Thoroughbred jumps (hurdle and steeplechase) racing in New Zealand. Incidence rates for race-day horse falls in jumps races from 2005/6 - 2018/19 racing seasons (n = 13,648 race day starts) were calculated per 1000 starts. Univariable and multivariable analyses of race-, horse- and jockey-level risk factors for horse falls were conducted using Poisson regression in a generalised linear mixed model. The incidence rate of horse falls in jumps races was 42 (95 % confidence intervals [CI], 39 - 45) per 100

Sex and race are risk factors for colorectal cancer within reach of the sigmoidoscope.

There is controversy about the efficacy and feasibility of flexible fiberoptic sigmoidoscopy (FFS) as a screening test for colorectal cancer in asymptomatic adults aged 50 years and over. Some authorities recommend periodic FFS screening for all such adults, whereas other authorities do not recommend screening FFS at all. There is evidence that some physicians have adopted a policy of "selective screening" by emphasizing screening FFS for adults with ancillary risk factors such as a personal history of colon polyps or previous colorectal cancer, or a family history of colon, female genital, or
