Association Between Family History and Early-Onset Atrial Flutter Across Racial and Ethnic Groups.

BACKGROUND: Genetic and familial contributions to early-onset atrial fibrillation are described primarily in individuals of European ancestry. However, the role of racial and familial contributions in the pathogenesis of early-onset atrial flutter (EOAFL) is unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this cross-sectional study, participants were enrolled prospectively from 2015 to 2021 in multiple academic centers with a diagnosis of atrial flutter (AFL) confirmed by ECG. EOAFL was defined as a diagnosis of AFL before age 66 years with no concomitant or previous diagnosis of atrial tachyarrhythmias. Fa

Blended Care Therapy for Depression and Anxiety: Outcomes across Diverse Racial and Ethnic Groups.

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported positive outcomes of blended care therapy (BCT), which combines face-to-face care with internet modules. However, there is insufficient evidence of its effectiveness across racial and ethnic groups. This study evaluated outcomes of a BCT program, which combined video psychotherapy with internet cognitive-behavioral modules, across race and ethnicity. METHODS: Participants were 6492 adults, with elevated anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 [GAD-7] ≥ 8) and/or depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9] ≥ 10) symptoms, enrolled in employer-offered BC

COVID-related social determinants of substance use disorder among diverse U.S. racial ethnic groups.

OBJECTIVE: Black, Asian, and Hispanic/Latino people are disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and were more likely to experience coronavirus-related racial discrimination. This study examined the association between pandemic-related stressors, including employment and housing disruptions, coronavirus-related victimization distress, and perceptions of pandemic-associated increase in societal racial biases, and substance use disorder (SUD) risk among Asian, Black, Hispanic/Latino, and non-Hispanic White adults in the U.S. METHODS: Data were collected as part of a larger national

Associations Between Racial and Ethnic Groups and Foot Self-Inspection in People With Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Daily foot self-inspection may permit earlier detection and treatment of a foot lesion, reducing the risk of infection and lower-limb amputation (LLA). Though race and ethnicity are strongly associated with LLA risk, with higher risk seen in African Americans (AA), American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN), and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders (NH/PI), associations between foot self-inspection and racial and ethnic groups are inconsistent. We aimed to assess differences in foot self-inspection among people with diabetes by race/ethnicity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using national

Menthol cigarette use among racial and ethnic groups in the United States, 2004-2008.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the patterns of menthol cigarette use can be useful in developing and justifying policies designed to prevent and reduce cigarette use and exposure to tobacco smoke. This report provides an update and summary of the demographic distribution and trends of menthol cigarette use in the United States. METHODS: Data from the 2004-2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health were analyzed to estimate menthol cigarette use among current smokers by race/ethnicity, sex, and age (12 years and older). A t-test was used to compare estimates for menthol and nonmenthol use by dem

Reported lactose tolerance of members of various racial/ethnic groups in Hawaii and Asia.

Subjects from various racial/ethnic groups in Hawaii and homeland Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans reported on their milk drinking in childhood and adulthood, as well as on whether or not milk drinking produced symptoms of intolerance. Intolerance was comparatively infrequent in all groups, although significant differences existed between groups in the frequency with which they manifested symptoms and in discomfort scores. Differences between Hawaiian subjects of Asian ancestry and homeland Asians in the frequency of reported symptoms, in mean discomfort scores, and in amount of milk needed to p

Maternal blood gas status of four racial groups in late pregnancy A preliminary study.

The blood gas/acid-base status of normal healthy Black, Indian, Coloured and White pregnant women was measured. All groups exhibited evidence of hyperventilation (decreased) PaCO2 relative to the non-pregnant state, with compensatory metabolic adjustment. Arterial oxygen tensions (PaO2) were significantly lower in the Black and Indian groups compared with their White counterparts (P less than 0,01). Differences between the former two series and the Coloured group, however, just failed to reach statistically significant levels (0,1 less than P less than 0,05). The possible causes of a lowered P

Assessing measurement invariance of paranoia scales across racial and ethnic groups in the U.S.

Paranoid ideation relates to a mistrust or suspicion of other people and their motives and may be especially influenced by environmental and psychosocial factors. Historically marginalized populations consistently endorse higher levels of paranoid ideation than Non-Hispanic White individuals, but it is unclear whether these differences can be attributed to measurement bias or if they represent genuine between-group differences in the latent construct. The current study aimed to examine the measurement invariance of five common paranoia measures. Participants included Non-Hispanic White (n = 30

High Myopia Prevalence across Racial Groups in the United States: A Systematic Scoping Review.

High myopia is a significant public health issue globally and in the United States (US), where it affects ~4% of the population or 13 million people. This is a potentially blinding condition, but complications can be prevented with early intervention in childhood. Several countries have developed robust data on high myopia, but the United States' data on high myopia remains lacking. Further, underrepresented populations are at particular risk of complications due to reduced access to optometric and ophthalmic care. We performed a systematic scoping review of population-based studies that inves

Prevalence and predictors of obesity-related cancers among racial/ethnic groups with metabolic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Obesity-related cancer (ORC) is associated with higher amounts of body fat, which could increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). A significant factor associated with CVD is metabolic syndrome (MetS), and MetS prevalence differs by race/ethnicity. The purpose of this study was to compare the prevalence and predictors of ORCs by race/ethnicity among adults (>18) with MetS. METHODS: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study using data from the 1999-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). A chi-square test was performed to determine d

A Comparison of Substance Use Patterns Among Lifetime Heroin-Injecting Individuals By Racial Groups.

BACKGROUND: Studies have identified differential substance use patterns by racial groups. One of the most commonly reported differences is a higher rate of injection drug use (IDU) among Non-Hispanic Whites compared to African Americans, but this is complicated by factors related to IDU (e.g., earlier drug-use initiation) that overlap with being White. OBJECTIVE: We explored differential substance use-patterns by racial groups within a sample of injection heroin users. METHODS: Substance-use data were collected from 373 not-in-treatment heroin users who endorsed any lifetime injection use (6

Gestational diabetes mellitus in korean women: similarities and differences from other racial/ethnic groups.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) reflects defects in insulin secretion in response to the metabolic demands of pregnancy. While GDM is increasingly common worldwide due in large part to the obesity epidemic, its frequency is relatively low in Korean women. In this report, the prevalence and risk factors for GDM, perinatal outcomes, and postpartum course are compared in non-Korean and Korean women. While Koreans and non-Koreans with GDM share pathophysiology and complications, there may be differences in the role of obesity and thus the effectiveness of interventions targeting obesity in GDM

The residential stability mindset increases racial in-group bias in empathy.

With the deepening of internationalization, the population's mobility has greatly increased, which can impact people's intergroup relationships. The current research examined the hypothesis that residential mobility plays a crucial role in racial in-group bias in empathy (RIBE) with three studies. By manipulating the residential mobility/stability mindset and measuring subjective pain intensity ratings (Study 1) and event-related potentials (ERPs, Study 2) of Chinese adults on painful and neutral expressions of Asian and Caucasian faces, we found that the RIBE in subjective ratings and N1 ampl
