Racism and alcohol use and related problems among Asian American and Pacific Island adults: The role of negative emotions in responses to experiencing racism.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although Asian American and Pacific Island (AAPI) individuals are less likely to use alcohol than other racial/ethnic groups, health disparities regarding alcohol-related outcomes indicate a need to study factors relevant to the AAPI community that may be related to alcohol use and related problems. Experiences of racism are related to greater alcohol use and related problems, presumably due to alcohol use in an attempt to manage heightened negative affect due to experiencing racism. Yet, no known studies have tested whether negative affect specifically related to ra

Differential Contributions of Internalized Racism Facets on Psychological Distress.

This study examined the relative contributions of various facets of internalized racism (IR) to anxious arousal and depressive symptoms. A racially diverse sample of 205 U.S.-based racial/ethnic minority adults (M age = 27.96, 60% female, 55.6% Black/African American, 18.5% Asian, 14.6% multiracial, and 11.3% other) completed validated measures of IR, anxiety, and depression. Hierarchical regressions were conducted to assess the unique effects of four IR facets across affective and cognitive dimensions: emotional reactions (affective) with group devaluation, adoption of dominant cultural stand

[Racism in health care (part 3): the mediterranean syndrome].

The "Mediterranean syndrome" is an ethno-racial prejudice defining a supposed cultural practice whereby patients from the Mediterranean region express their pain more demonstratively than others. The origins of this syndrome can be traced back in time, and the group of patients labeled under this term has evolved over time to include other populations. It might be comforting to assume that "Mediterranean syndrome" is a thing of the past. However, it is still very much present in healthcare today, and remains a source of racism in healthcare. This article analyses and presents the origins of th

How Racism and "Tropical Medicine" Built the Panama Canal.

At the turn of the 20th century, the physician William Gorgas led work that substantially mitigated mortality from mosquito-borne diseases among workers building the Panama Canal. The waterway launched the United States to political and economic superpower status by eliminating the need for risky maritime travel around the southern tip of South America, expediting exportation of US goods in international markets. Yet, as this article explains, innovations that curbed malaria and yellow fever were deeply rooted in racist foundations of capital and empire.

INTRODUCTION Health Law and Anti-Racism: Reckoning and Response.

Law and racism are intertwined, with legal tools bearing the potential to serve as instruments of oppression or equity. This Special Issue explores this dual nature of health law, with attention to policing in the context of mental health, schools, and substance use disorders; industry and the environment in the context of food advertising, tobacco regulation, worker safety, and environmental racism; health care and research in the context of infant mortality, bias in medical applications of AI, and diverse inclusion in research; and anti-racist teaching and practice in the context of building

Racism and Postpartum Blood Pressure in a Multiethnic Prospective Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum hypertension is a key factor in racial-ethnic inequities in maternal mortality. Emerging evidence suggests that experiences of racism, both structural and interpersonal, may contribute to disparities. We examined associations between gendered racial microaggressions (GRMs) during obstetric care with postpartum blood pressure (BP). METHODS: We conducted a prospective postpartum cohort of 373 Asian, Black, and Hispanic people in New York City and Philadelphia. At delivery, we administered the GRM in obstetrics scale. We measured BP for 3 months using text-based monitoring

Interactive Effects of Racism and Racial Centrality on ADHD Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Although race-related stress is associated with numerous mental health outcomes, no previous research has examined associations with ADHD symptoms. We examine how such associations differ in Black Americans based on racial identity to allow for more nuanced understandings of racial discrimination's association with ADHD symptoms. METHODS: This study asked a sample of Black Americans to answer questionnaires assessing race-related stress, ADHD symptoms, and racial centrality. RESULTS: In predicting ADHD symptoms, we found a positive effect of race-related stress and a negative effe

The Importance of Discussing the History of Racism in Medical Student Education.

Racial health disparities are tightly linked to the longstanding and pervasive institution of racism. Efforts to reverse disparities begin with awareness and accountability through education. The health care workforce must be formally educated about racist practices, tools, and ideologies that perpetuate poor health outcomes. This article explores prior efforts to integrate race didactics into medical school education, addresses current legislation, and illuminates lessons learned from a single institution pilot curriculum exploring the history of racism in the field of obstetrics and gynecolo

Measuring The Enduring Imprint Of Structural Racism On American Neighborhoods.

A long history of discriminatory policies in the United States has created disparities in neighborhood resources that shape ethnoracial health inequities today. To quantify these differences, we organized publicly available data on forty-two variables at the census tract level within nine domains affected by structural racism: built environment, criminal justice, education, employment, housing, income and poverty, social cohesion, transportation, and wealth. Using data from multiple sources at several levels of geography, we developed scores in each domain, as well as a summary score that we c

Racism and Resistance: A Qualitative Study of Bias As a Barrier to Breastfeeding.

Background: Nearly 75% of Black non-Hispanic babies born in 2016 ever breastfed. However, Black mothers still experience barriers to breastfeeding, perpetuating disparities in exclusivity and duration. Subjects and Methods: Using data collected from five focus groups with Black mothers (N = 30) in Washington, District of Columbia during summer 2019, we critically examine the influence of institutionalized and personally mediated racism on breastfeeding. We also explore the counter-narratives Black women use to resist oppression and deal with these barriers. Results: Themes surrounding institut

Racism and mental health and the role of mental health professionals.

The concept of "race" and consequently of racism is not a recent phenomenon, although it had profound effects on the lives of populations over the last several hundred years. Using slaves and indentured labor from racial groups designated to be "the others," who was seen as inferior and thus did not deserve privileges, and who were often deprived of the right to life and basic needs as well as freedoms. Thus, creation of "the other" on the basis of physical characteristics and dehumanizing them became more prominent. Racism is significantly related to poor health, including mental health. The

Race, ethnicity, and racism in the nutrition literature: an update for 2020.

Social disparities in the US and elsewhere have been terribly highlighted by the current COVID-19 pandemic but also an outbreak of state-sponsored violence. The field of nutrition, like other areas of science, has commonly used 'race' to describe research participants and populations, without the recognition that race is a social, not a biologic, construct. We review the limitations of classifying participants by race, and recommend a series of steps for authors, researchers and policymakers to consider when producing and reading the nutrition literature. We recommend that biomedical researche
