Radar HRV Monitoring With Physiological Prior Inspired Deep Neural Networks.

Radar sensing has emerged as a promising solution for the contactless monitoring of Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a crucial indicator of the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems. However, due to signal noise and interference that easily obscure heartbeat details, along with variations in heartbeat across different physiological conditions, existing methods remain restricted to laboratory settings with healthy subjects and fail in real-world scenarios involving more complex physiological conditions. In this study, we propose a physiological prior-inspired deep learning framework for rob

Radar-Based Heart Rate Estimation Method Under Respiratory Harmonic Interference.

Non-contact vital sign monitoring using millimeter-wave radar has emerged as a promising alternative to contact-based devices for continuous healthcare and elderly care applications. However, accurate heart rate estimation remains challenging because the weak cardiac-induced chest displacement is approximately an order of magnitude smaller than respiratory motion, and its fundamental frequency is frequently masked by higher-order respiratory harmonics. Here we propose a signal processing framework that addresses this challenge through three integrated stages: a slow-time phase correlation meth

Semi-Supervised Radar Work Mode Recognition Based on Contrastive Learning.

Deep learning for fine-grained radar mode recognition faces a major bottleneck-its heavy reliance on expensively labeled data. To address this, we propose a novel semi-supervised framework that effectively leverages unlabeled data. Through an end-to-end, triple-branch framework that integrates a dual contrastive learning mechanism with tailored strategies for pulse distortions, our model achieves high accuracy with minimal labels. Experimental results on two challenging datasets demonstrate that the proposed framework boosts accuracy by 17% to 34% using only 10% of the labeled data, establishi

Reconstruction of Range-Doppler Map Corrupted by FMCW Radar Asynchronization.

Frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar system synchronization using external clock signals can cause repeated Range-Doppler (R-D) map corruption when clock signal asynchronization problems occur between the transmitter and receiver. In this paper, we propose a signal processing method for the reconstruction of the corrupted R-D map owing to the FMCW radar's asynchronization. After calculating the image entropy for each R-D map, the corrupted ones are extracted and reconstructed using the normal R-D maps acquired before and after the individual maps. To verify the effectiveness of the

Estimation of Urine Flow Velocity Using Millimeter-Wave FMCW Radar.

This study investigated the feasibility of remotely estimating the urinary flow velocity of a human subject with high accuracy using millimeter-wave radar. Uroflowmetry is a measurement that involves the speed and volume of voided urine to diagnose benign prostatic hyperplasia or bladder abnormalities. Traditionally, the urine velocity during urination has been determined indirectly by analyzing the urine weight during urination. The maximum velocity and urination pattern were then used as a reference to determine the health condition of the prostate and bladder. The traditional uroflowmetry c

Vital Sign Monitoring Using FMCW Radar in Various Sleeping Scenarios.

Remote monitoring of vital signs for studying sleep is a user-friendly alternative to monitoring with sensors attached to the skin. For instance, remote monitoring can allow unconstrained movement during sleep, whereas detectors requiring a physical contact may detach and interrupt the measurement and affect sleep itself. This study evaluates the performance of a cost-effective frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar in remote monitoring of heart rate and respiration in scenarios resembling a set of normal and abnormal physiological conditions during sleep. We evaluate the vital signs

Highly depth-resolved chirped pulse photothermal radar for bone diagnostics.

A novel chirped pulse photothermal (PT) radiometric radar with improved sensitivity over the conventional harmonically modulated thermal-wave radar technique and alternative pulsed laser photothermal radiometry is introduced for the diagnosis of biological samples, especially bones with tissue and skin overlayers. The constraints imposed by the laser safety (maximum permissible exposure) ceiling on pump laser energy and the strong attenuation of thermal-wave signals in tissues significantly limit the photothermally active depth in most biological specimens to a level which is normally insuffic

Evaluation of Radar-Based Cardiorespiratory Monitoring Under Different Physiological Conditions.

The use of Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar for contactless monitoring of cardiac and respiratory activity has demonstrated significant potential for clinical applications. However, its performance in nonphysiological frequency ranges remains underexplored. This study evaluated the accuracy of a FMCW radar system operating at 122.5 GHz for monitoring heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR) across physiological and nonphysiological conditions. The estimation of heart and respiration rates, as well as the separation of signals, was conducted using Maximum Likelihood Estimation

Accurate Range Modeling for High-Resolution Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar.

Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an advanced microwave imaging technology that provides all-weather and all-day target information. However, as spaceborne SAR resolution improves, traditional echo signal models based on airborne SAR design become inadequate due to the curved orbit, Earth rotation, and increased propagation distance. In this study, we propose an accurate range model for high-resolution spaceborne SAR by analyzing motion trajectory and Doppler parameters from the perspective of the space geometry of spaceborne SAR. We evaluate the accuracy of existing range models an

Autoencoder-Based Target Detection in Automotive MIMO FMCW Radar System.

In general, a constant false alarm rate algorithm (CFAR) is widely used to automatically detect targets in an automotive frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar system. However, if the number of guard cells, the number of training cells, and the probability of false alarm are set improperly in the conventional CFAR algorithm, the target detection performance is severely degraded. Therefore, we propose a method using a convolutional neural network-based autoencoder (AE) to replace the CFAR algorithm in the multiple-input and multiple-output FMCW radar system. In the AE, the entire dete

Rapid Deployment Aortic Replacement (RADAR) Registry in Spain: a protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid deployment valves (RDV) represent a newly introduced approach to aortic valve replacement which facilitates surgical implantation and minimally invasive techniques, shortens surgical times and shows excellent haemodynamic performance. However, evidence on their safety, efficacy and potential complications is mostly fitted with small-volume and retrospective studies. Moreover, no current guidelines exist. To improve our knowledge on this technology, The Rapid Deployment Aortic Replacement (RADAR) Registry will be established across Spain with the aim of assessing RDV outcome

WSR-88D doppler radar detection of corn earworm moth migration.

Corn earworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) (CEW) populations infesting one crop production area may rapidly migrate and infest distant crop production areas. Although entomological radars have detected corn earworm moth migrations, the spatial extent of the radar coverage has been limited to a small horizontal view above crop production areas. The Weather Service Radar (version 88D) (WSR-88D) continuously monitors the radar-transmitted energy reflected by, and radial speed of, biota as well as by precipitation over areas that may encompass crop production areas. We analyzed data from the WSR-88D ra

An Improved RODNet for Object Detection Based on Radar and Camera Fusion.

Deep learning-based radar detection often suffers from poor cross-device generalization due to hardware heterogeneity. To address this, we propose a unified framework that combines rigorous calibration with adaptive temporal modeling. The method integrates three coordinated steps: (1) ensuring precise spatial alignment via improved Perspective-n-Point (PnP) calibration with closed-loop verification; (2) unifying signal statistics through multi-range bin calibration and chirp-wise Z-score standardization; and (3) enhancing feature consistency using a lightweight global-temporal adapter (GTA) dr

Validity and Reliability of a Radar Tracking Device in Ice Hockey Testing.

This study investigated the reliability and validity of a radar tracking device (RTD) for assessing linear sprinting (sprint) and change-of-direction (CoD) performance in ice hockey. Twenty competitive male youth ice hockey players (age: 16.35 ± 0.67 years; body mass: 72.37 ± 10.06 kg; height: 177.48 ± 5.40 cm) performed three 30-m sprints and three 10-0-5-m CoD tests on ice. Sprint and CoD performance variables, including split times, position-based times, and maximal velocity, were assessed simultaneously using the RTD and a linear encoder (LE). Correlations between systems ranged from small

Occurrence of "under-the-radar" antibiotic resistance in anthropogenically affected produce.

With global climate change, treated-wastewater irrigation and manure amendment are becoming increasingly important in sustainable agriculture in water- and nutrient-stressed regions. Yet, these practices can potentially disseminate pathogens and antimicrobial resistance determinants to crops, resulting in serious health risks to humans through the food chain. Previous studies demonstrated that pathogen and antimicrobial resistance indicators from wastewater and manure survive poorly in the environment, suggesting that ecological barriers prevent their dissemination. However, we recently found

Under the Radar: Immune Evasion, Pathogenesis and Control of HIV Infection.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus discovered in 1983 as the causative agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Following several zoonotic spillover events from non-human primates, the virus spread between humans for more than 60 years under the radar. HIV infects and kills CD4 T cells, the cells that coordinate adaptive immune responses. Primoinfection is associated with a flu-like symptomatology and chronic infection is clinically silent, and mostly not diagnosed, contributing to viral spread and leading to fatal long-term outcomes.
