INTRODUCTION: A 50-year-old man developed intermittent paresthesia of the outer portion of the right thumb. Paresthesia increased with thumb abduction and flexion. The remainder of the physical examination was normal.
METHODS: Routine motor and sensory examinations of the median and ulnar nerves were within normal ranges.
RESULTS: Ultrasonographic studies revealed that a tenosynovitis of the flexor pollicis longus of the right thumb was compressing the radial digital nerve of the thumb.
CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasonographic evaluation was used in conjunction with nerve conduction studies to diagnos

OBJECTION: Entrapment neuropathies are common in clinical practice. Early diagnosis and management of nerve compression is necessary to maintain limb function and to improve the patient's quality of life.
CASE REPORT: In this article, we reported a woman presenting with wrist drop as a result of acute radial nerve compression following strenuous activity involving the arms. The diagnosis was based on clinical and ultrasonographic findings. Once the diagnosis was made, activity modifications and systemic steroid were prescribed, and the patient made a near-complete recovery.
CONCLUSION: Patie

BACKGROUND: Finger extension weakness could be a presentation of either posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) syndrome or multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN). However, there is a delay in the diagnosis of MMN in cases with a selective radial weakness, as they are frequently misdiagnosed as PIN.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze which variables in nerve conduction studies could aid in the early diagnosis of MMN.
METHODS: We reviewed charts of patients with diagnoses of MMN or PIN syndrome, from 2014 to 2022, in a single Brazilian reference center. Electrophysiological parameters included in the analysis were

ObjectivePosture-induced radial neuropathy, known as Saturday night palsy, occurs because of compression of the radial nerve. The clinical symptoms of radial neuropathy are similar to stroke or a herniated cervical disk, which makes it difficult to diagnose and sometimes leads to inappropriate evaluations. The purpose of our study was to establish the clinical characteristics and diagnostic assessment of compressive radial neuropathy.MethodsRetrospectively, we reviewed neurophysiologic studies on 25 patients diagnosed with radial nerve palsy, who experienced wrist drop after maintaining a cert

BACKGROUND: Superficial radial neuropathy (SRN) is an uncommon sensory mononeuropathy, and data on neuropathic pain in SRN are limited. This study aimed to determine the frequency of neuropathic pain in patients with SRN and to evaluate its associations with neurophysiological severity.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed adult patients diagnosed with SRN. Neuropathic pain was evaluated using the Douleur Neuropathique 4 Questions (DN4) and the Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (LANSS). Neurophysiological severity was categorized as mild, moderate, or severe according to the

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1988eng
Arthroscopic surgery of the elbow was performed in a 14-year-old male athlete for diagnosis and treatment of osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum. Anterolateral and anteromedial portals were used in accordance with described technique. Postsurgical examination revealed an immediate and complete palsy of the posterior interosseous nerve. This complication was attributed to the manipulation of the arthroscope and instrumentation in close proximity to the radial nerve. Neuromuscular function returned to normal over a 6-month period. This case demonstrates the importance of portal placement

INTRODUCTION: People with ulnar, radial or median nerve injuries can present significant impairment of their sensory and motor functions. The prescribed treatment for these conditions often includes electrophysical therapies, whose effectiveness in improving symptoms and function is a source of debate. Therefore, this systematic review aims to provide an integrative overview of the efficacy of these modalities in sensorimotor rehabilitation compared to placebo, manual therapy, or between them.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review according to PRISMA guidelines. We perform a literature re

INTRODUCTION: The radial nerve and posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) are prone to injury at multiple sites. Electrodiagnostic (EDx) studies may only identify the most proximal lesion. Nerve ultrasound could augment EDx by visualizing additional pathology.
METHODS: This investigation was a retrospective examination of ultrasound and EDx from 26 patients evaluated for posterior cord/radial/PIN lesions.
RESULTS: Eighteen of 26 patients had abnormalities on EDx (15 radial, 2 PIN, 1 posterior cord). Ultrasound identified 15 of 18 (83%) of the EDx abnormalities and provided additional diagnostic

INTRODUCTION: Neurologic complications after radial artery harvest for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remain incompletely characterized, particularly after endoscopic radial artery harvest (ERAH). As the radial artery has become the preferred second arterial conduit due to its superior long-term outcomes, ERAH has gained popularity as a minimally invasive alternative to open harvest with favorable cosmetic and wound outcomes. Although prior studies suggest neurologic symptoms are often transient, persistent sensory deficits may be underrecognized. The lateral antebrachial cutaneous ner

BACKGROUND: Distal radial and ulnar artery occlusion is a rare condition, especially in the absence of trauma, invasive procedures, vasculitis, or embolic events, and it may mimic neuropathic symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis.
CASE SUMMARY: A 32-year-old woman with uncontrolled hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity presented with 6 months of intermittent pain, tingling, and discoloration in both hands, which had worsened over the past 2 weeks. Examination showed cold extremities, diminished radial pulses, prolonged capillary refill, oxygen saturation below 94% in the fingers, a

Radial tunnel syndrome (RTS) is an uncommon controversial entity thought to cause chronic lateral proximal forearm pain due to compression of the deep branch of the radial nerve, without paralysis or sensory changes. Diagnostic confusion for pain conditions in this region results from inconsistent definitions, terminology, tests, and descriptions in the literature of RTS and "tennis elbow," or lateral epicondylitis. A case of bilateral RTS with signs discordant with traditionally used clinical diagnostic tests was successfully relieved with surgical decompression and led us to perform a compre

IMPORTANCE: Radial optic neurotomy (RON) was first described by Opremcak as a treatment for patients with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). The most common cause of visual loss in patients with optic disc drusen is nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). The pathogenesis of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy associated with optic disc drusen is assumed to be similar to the compartment-like syndrome described by Opremcak in the case of central retinal vein occlusion.
OBSERVATION: An 82-year-old male with bilateral optic disc drusen presented with bilateral vi

Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsy (HNPP) is a rare autosomal dominant disease characterized by focal, recurrent, demyelinating peripheral neuropathies. It is caused by deletions of the gene encoding for peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) on chromosome 17. While it may range widely, the most common clinical presentation is an acute, focal mononeuropathy with numbness or muscle weakness after trauma or compression. Diagnostic tools include electrophysiological studies, genetic tests and nerve biopsies. There is no standard surgical or pharmacological treatment. The course

OBJECTIVE: Median-ulnar comparative studies (MUCS) play an important role in the electrodiagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome, but in diabetes concomitant involvement of Guyon's canal (ulnar nerve compression at the wrist) would reduce the sensitivity of MUCS. This study tested the utility of median-radial comparative studies (MRCS) in diabetic patients.
METHODS: Anti-dromic MUCS and MRCS were prospectively performed in 120 patients with diabetes, and 64 normal controls. In 28 diabetic patients, latent addition using threshold tracking was performed in superficial radial sensory axons to estima
