Non-radioactive electron capture detector for gas chromatography - A possible replacement for radioactive detectors.

With detection limits in the low ppbv-range, electron capture detectors (ECD) are the most sensitive GC-detectors available for electron affine compounds, such as pesticides or chlorofluorocarbons. The working principle is based on the generation of free electrons at atmospheric pressure, which are usually emitted from a radioactive Ni-63 source. However, the use of radioactive materials leads to regulatory restrictions regarding purchase, operation and disposal. Recently, we introduced a novel ECD based on a non-radioactive electron source, achieving comparable detection limits, e.g. 1 ppbv (

Effect of radioactive and non-radioactive mercury on wheat germination and the anti-toxic role of glutathione.

Studies to test the noxious effect of mercury ions on wheat germination and seedling growth showed that germination rate, shoot length, and fresh weights varied as a function of their concentration in the treatment solutions. At the same concentration, the radioactive mercury proved to be more harmful to the living seeds and seedlings. The detoxification action of glutathione for both radioactive and non-radioactive mercury was also followed. After a seven-day period of germination in the presence of the investigated compounds, the wheat plantlets were cut from the seeds, and their height, wei

Radiation-modified natural zeolites for cleaning liquid nuclear waste (irradiation against radioactivity).

There have been comparatively few investigations reported of radiation effects in zeolites, although it is known that these materials may be modified substantially by exposure to ionizing radiation. Thus, by exposure to γ-rays or high-energy particles, the charge states of atoms may be changed so to create, and accumulate, lattice point defects, and to form structurally disordered regions. Such a technique may permit the creation, in a controlled fashion, of additionally useful properties of the material while preserving its essential stoichiometry and structure. Accordingly, we present an app

Environmental radioactivity analyses in Italy following the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear accident.

Following the Fukushima power plants accident on the 11th March 2011, the radioactivity monitoring programme at the Italian ENEA research centres was activated in order to detect the possible new input of radionuclides through atmospheric transport and precipitation. Measurements of (131)I and (134,137)Cs were carried out on atmospheric particulate, atmospheric deposition, seawater and mussels and sheep milk. In the daily samples of air particulate, (131)I was detectable between March 28 and April 12, with extremely low concentrations (<1 mBq m(-3); the detection limit for (131)I was ~0.2 mBq

Measurements of natural radioactivity and the resulting radiation doses from commercial granites.

Saudi Arabia is becoming a relatively large market for local and foreign marble and granite use in dwellings. Due to increasing concern about environmental radiological protection, different types of locally widely used granite tiles were collected from different suppliers in the Jeddah province, Saudi Arabia. The analysis for these granite tiles for gamma radiation was conducted by means of a high-resolution HPGe gamma-spectroscopy system. The activity concentrations of (232)Th, (226)Ra and 40K in the selected granite samples ranged from 4.9 to 144, 9.7 to 133 and 168 to 1806 Bq kg(-1), respe

Photon attenuation, natural radioactivity content and radon exhalation rate of building materials.

High concentrations of natural radionuclides in building materials can result in high dose rates indoors, from both internal and external exposure. In dose calculations, the main radionuclides of interest are 226Ra, 232Th and 40K. Usually much attention is paid to 226Ra due to 222Rn exhalation and the subsequent internal exposure. Other radionuclides of the uranium series such as 238U and 210Pb, emitting low energy photons are not usually determined and an assumption of radioactive equilibrium is made. The above assumption is seldom checked mainly because of the difficulties in the gamma-spect

Using ex vivo radioactivity measurement to differentiate parathyroid single-gland and multigland disease.

BACKGROUND: Radioguided parathyroidectomy is based on the principle that hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands have increased radiotracer uptake, which can be measured instantaneously. We sought to determine if ex vivo radioactivity measurement could be used to predict parathyroid pathology and guide surgical decision-making in a time-efficient manner. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who underwent parathyroidectomy at our institution (2000-2022). All patients received a preoperative injection of 10mCi of 99Tc. Intraoperatively, radioac

Elimination of nonspecific radioactivity from [76Br]bromide in PET study with [76Br]bromodeoxyuridine.

[76Br]Bromodeoxyuridine ([76Br]BrdU) might allow a determination of proliferation in vivo using positron emission tomography (PET), but only with consideration of organ nonspecific radioactivity constituted by [76Br]bromide. A first study assessed the potential of diuretics to eliminate [76Br]bromide. [76Br]Bromide was injected in the vein of rats and different diuretic combinations were given. Urine was collected and radioactivity measured. Torasemide plus sodium chloride gave better 76Br elimination than the other diuretics. In a second experiment, rats were given [76Br]BrdU. After the radio

Non-enzymatic covalent binding of radioactivity from [14C]thiourea to rat lung protein.

In vitro covalent binding of radioactivity from [14C]thiourea (TU) to rat lung protein occurs in the presence of 100% CO2. Prior boiling of lung slices results in a subsequent increase in covalent binding. Covalently bound radioactivity was released from rat lung homogenates and acid-insoluble protein obtained from animals treated with [14C]TU. The release was achieved with ammonium ion. One possibility suggested by these results is that the bound species may involve binding of isothiocyanic acid via a thiocarbamylation reaction.

[Exposure to radioactivity in the perinatal period following the reactor accident in Chernobyl].

After the Chernobyl nuclear accident on 26 April 1986 Europe experienced increased radioactive radiation by contamination of the atmospheric aerosol and the soil. Foods emanating radioactive radiation were ingested by the population to an increased extent via the food chain. This proportion of radioactive radiation accounted for about 80% of the total irradiation exposure and prompted us to examine mother's milk, amniotic fluid and placenta of newborn in respect of their concentrations of radionuclides I-131, Cs-134 and Cs-137. Due to the short half-life of I-131 an increased concentration of

Radioactive Iodine: A Living History.

Background: Before the development of antithyroid drugs in the 1940s, treatment of Graves' hyperthyroidism was primarily surgical. Surgical mortality was quite variable, but a significant minority of patients died during or after surgery. Summary: In 1936, Karl Compton, President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in a lecture attended by Massachusetts General Hospital physicians, suggested that artificially radioactive isotopes might be useful for studying metabolism. By 1942, Hertz and Roberts reported on the successful use of radioactive iodine (RAI) to treat Graves' hyperthyroid

Treatment of hyperthyroidism with radioactive iodine.

Treatment of hyperthyroidism with RAI has been performed for more than a half century with efficacy and safety. For its optimal use, the physician must employ appropriate patient selection criteria and clinical judgment concerning pretreatment patient preparation. The dose of the 131I needed remains an area of uncertainty and debate; thus far, it has not been possible to resolve the trade-off between efficient definitive cure of hyperthyroidism and the high incidence of post-therapy hypothyroidism. Early side effects are uncommon and readily manageable. Other than the need for long-term monito

Use of radioactive phosphorus in haematology.

Following the development of the cyclotron in 1932, radio-isotopes became available for use in medicine both as tracer substances and therapeutic agents. The father of nuclear medicine, Dr J. H. Lawrence, pioneered their use in a range of disease states and found that radio-isotopes were of enormous value in the diagnosis and treatment of haemopoetic disease, particularly the myeloproliferative disorders. Radioactive phosphorus 32P emerged as the radio-isotope of choice for the myelosuppressive treatment of myeloproliferative disorders. This article also describes the use of radio-isotopes in

Induction of hyperparathyroidism by radioactive iodine.

External irradiation to the head and neck has been associated with the emergence of hyperparathyroidism, due both to adenoma and hyperplasia since a single case report was published in 1975. A recent report indicates that there may be some association between hyperparathyroidism and radioiodine administered for thyroid disease. Eight patients are presented herein, all female and in middle age, who presented with hyperparathyroidism due to adenoma (six patients) or hyperplasia (one patient who had undergone radioiodine treatment). In three patients, the dose of radioiodine exceeded 30 mCi. The
