Capture and analysis of radiation dose reports for radiology.

Radiographic imaging systems can produce records of exposure and dose parameters for each patient. A variety of file formats are in use including plain text, bit map images showing pictures of written text and radiation dose structured reports as text or extended markup language files. Whilst some of this information is available with image data on the hospital picture archive and communication system, access is restricted to individual patient records, thereby making it difficult to locate multiple records for the same scan protocol. This study considers the exposure records and dose reports

RadCoT: a Radiological Chain-of-Thought framework for enhanced error detection in radiology reports.

BACKGROUND: Errors in radiology reports are a major patient-safety concern and are difficult to detect with manual quality assurance (QA). Large language models (LLMs) can assist, but generic prompting does not reflect radiologists' structured, section-based workflows. OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate RadCoT (Radiological Chain-of-Thought), a domain-specific prompting framework aligning LLM reasoning with radiological review workflows, and to assess whether it enables open-source models to approach commercial benchmarks for error detection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective stud

Ovarian Cancer Screening and Ovarian-Adnexal Reporting and Data System.

Ovarian cancer is the second-most common gynecologic malignancy and one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women. However, its incidence remains low, accounting for approximately 1% of all types of cancers. Ovarian cancer encompasses a heterogeneous group of tumors classified based on distinctive histopathologic and molecular features. Epithelial ovarian tumors are the most common type, accounting for approximately 90% of ovarian cancers, and can be further divided into type I and type II cancers. Type II epithelial ovarian cancers are the most common and most aggressive, with h

Automated MRI pituitary structured reporting from free-text using a fine-tuned Llama model: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Structured reports in radiology have demonstrated substantial advantages over unstructured ones. However, the transition from unstructured to structured reporting can face challenges, as experienced radiologists worry about the potential loss of valuable information. In this study, we fine-tuned the Llama 2 model capable of generating structured pituitary MRI reports from unstructured reports. METHODS: We used a training set comprising 104 pituitary MRI reports to fine-tune Llama 2 and 26 reports as a test set to evaluate the system. The dataset was annotated manuall

Is Vibe Coding a 'Fire of Prometheus' for Non-Developer Clinicians, Especially Clinical Radiologists?

Vibe coding is a workflow in which users describe the desired software behavior in natural language, following which large language models (LLMs) generate the code. It is increasingly being used by non-developer clinicians without any formal programming training to create tools that support the clinical workflow. This development is both timely and consequential for radiology, one of the specialties both most exposed to artificial intelligence (AI)-driven automation and best positioned to adopt it owing to its longstanding engagement with imaging AI, digital infrastructure, and information sys

Automated Integration of AI Results into Radiology Reports Using Common Data Elements.

Integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into radiology practice can create opportunities to improve diagnostic accuracy, workflow efficiency, and patient outcomes. Integration demands the ability to seamlessly incorporate AI-derived measurements into radiology reports. Common data elements (CDEs) define standardized, interoperable units of information. This article describes the application of CDEs as a standardized framework to embed AI-derived results into radiology reports. The authors defined a set of CDEs for measurements of the volume and attenuation of the liver and spleen. An AI sy

Reducing Annotation Costs Using Knowledge Distillation for Label‑Efficient Negation Detection in Radiology Reports: Multisite Internal Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Negation in radiology reports (eg, "no evidence of dissection") is essential for accurately conveying diagnostic information. Clinical natural language processing systems, however, often fail to determine whether findings occur within negated or speculative contexts, leading to excessive false keyword alerts, noise in information extraction, and reduced precision in downstream clinical or research applications. Transformer models have advanced detection capabilities but require costly expert labeling. Large language models (LLMs) may provide label-efficient alternatives through few

Objective quality assessment of neuroradiology reports using large language models.

AIM: Radiology reports are essential for clinical decision-making and must meet standards of clarity, completeness, and diagnostic accuracy. However, quality assessment is often subjective, time-consuming, and dependent on expert reviewers. Large language models (LLMs) offer a promising alternative for automating this process. This study evaluates whether LLMs can objectively and consistently assess the formal and diagnostic quality of neuroradiology reports. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed 277 neuroradiology reports, originally authored by 10 radiologists and subsequently evaluated by a d

Radiology capital asset management.

Radiology administrators are expected not only to take on the ultimate accountability for meeting the needs and challenges of present day-to-day operations, but also to plan for the future. Computer Aided Facility Management (CAFM), as a tool, enables radiology managers to obtain up-to-date data to manage their services. Using Autocad on a unix-based minicomputer as the graphical base generator and integrating information from a MUMPS-based minicomputer, the CAFM process can define areas to be studied for productivity and life cycle costs. From an analysis of radiology service, management was

The effect of clinical history on chest radiograph interpretations in a PACS environment.

The effect that accompanying patient information has on diagnostic accuracy in radiologic interpretation has been studied by many researchers but remains a matter of contention. Experiments in the past emphasized the chest film because this procedure is the one done most frequently in radiology. However, with the increasing importance of digital imaging, the role of patient history in these procedures should be assessed. The use of a model computerized patient history in the interpretation of digitized chest images that were displayed on a high-resolution workstation was studied. Two hundred f
