Microcystic adnexal carcinoma of the skin: the role of adjuvant radiotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: Microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC) is a rare cutaneous tumour where the role of radiotherapy remains undefined. We contrast our institutional experience with current literature, define the local control rate and suggest a role for adjuvant radiotherapy in the treatment of this cancer. METHODS: From 1992-2008, a retrospective review was undertaken for MAC treated with curative intent involving surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and Mater Hospital Brisbane. Clinical, pathologic and treatment details as well as patterns of recurrence were analysed. R

[Problems with radiation protection for adjuvant radiotherapy of thyroid cancer].

Ablative treatment of thyroid cancer with 131I is associated with the exposure to ionizing radiation of not only the target cells but also other cells and organs in the patient's body. Thermoluminescent dosimetry showed that the mean dose equivalent in ovaries equaled to several dozen mSv when the mean therapeutic dose was 2.8 GBq of 131I. In the treated young women the performed ovulation tests revealed no dysfunction of the ovaries. The highest dose equivalent in the clinic staff would not exceed 20 mSv per year. Accordingly, the dose equivalents to the public would not exceed the threshold

[Clinical evaluation of adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy for esophageal carcinoma].

Surgical treatment is the most effective therapy for esophageal carcinoma, and adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy are essential for the improvement of postoperative curability. The recurrence of carcinoma after curative surgery is often observed in the upper mediastinum and cervical portion. Fifty Gy of postoperative prophylactic irradiation has been given routinely and this has suppressed the local recurrence of the disease to a remarkable degree. Metastasis of carcinoma to internal organs was not controlled by radiotherapy. This occurs in the case of undifferentiated carcinoma, severe ly

Young Adult With Malignant Phyllodes Undergoing Adjuvant Radiotherapy With Bolus.

Malignant phyllodes tumor of the breast (MPTB) is a rare fibroepithelial tumor and very uncommon among young adult women. It has a higher likelihood of local recurrence (LR) compared to other phyllodes tumors of the breast. Due to limited data, there is no established consensus regarding adjuvant radiotherapy for MPTB. Post-Mastectomy Radiotherapy (PMRT) reduces the risk of LR and breast cancer mortality. A bolus can be used to treat LR by counteracting the skin-sparing effect, as well as in cases where body habitus or tissue expander location may require a bolus to deliver the full dose to th

Extensive Morphea Following Adjuvant Radiotherapy for Breast Carcinoma-Case Report.

Radiation-induced morphea (RIM) is a rare complication following radiotherapy (RT) for breast cancer treatment. Its distribution is usually confined to the breast having received radiotherapy. A generalized form of RIM also exists, defined as lesions extending beyond the radiotherapy site, but data on the subject are scarce in the literature. This complication remains difficult to treat, due partly to the variable extent of disease and to individual clinical response rates to the wide array of available therapies, such as topical therapy (i.e., topical tacrolimus or topical corticosteroids), p

Choice of Adjuvant Radiotherapy Facility in Major Salivary Gland Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Undergoing surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy (aRT) at the same facility has been associated with higher overall survival (OS) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Our study investigates whether undergoing surgery and aRT at the same academic facility is associated with higher OS in major salivary gland cancer (MSGC). METHODS: The 2006-2018 National Cancer Database was queried for patients with MSGC undergoing surgery at an academic facility and then aRT. Multivariable binary logistic and Cox proportional hazards regression models were implemented. RESULTS: Of 2801 patients sa

Clinically Significant Dermatitis During Adjuvant Radiotherapy for Invasive Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Patients with breast cancer receiving adjuvant radiotherapy may experience grade ≥2 dermatitis. In the Interreg-project HeAT, a mobile application (app) reminding patients to perform skin care will be prospectively tested with the goal of decreasing clinically significant radiation dermatitis. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of grade ≥2 dermatitis and risk factors, required for designing the prospective trial. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study of 327 patients with breast cancer irradiated during 2022-2023, the prevalence of grade ≥2 dermatitis and 23 p

Self-reported pain in breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy (RT) commonly report pain, contributing to physical and emotional distress, and potentially resulting in poor quality of life. This study prospectively identified trends and risk factors in patient-reported pain associated with breast irradiation using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and a study-specific Skin Symptom Assessment (SSA). METHODS: Before RT and once per week during RT, patients completed the ESAS and SSA. Upon RT completion, patients were contacted via telephone to complete both assessments weekly for 6 weeks, an

Radiotherapy approaches for locally advanced penile cancer: neoadjuvant and adjuvant.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: As penile cancer is an uncommon malignancy in the Western society, randomized trials to address the controversies in management have not previously been undertaken. The incorporation of multidisciplinary approaches in the management of advanced penile carcinoma has largely borrowed evidence from analogous malignancies in the anogenital region. This review is being undertaken in preparation for the international launch of InPACT, the International Penile Advanced Cancer Trial, a collaborative effort from European and North American trialists. RECENT FINDINGS: The literature

Randomized trial of radiotherapy plus concurrent-adjuvant chemotherapy vs radiotherapy alone for regionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Current practice of adding concurrent-adjuvant chemotherapy to radiotherapy (CRT) for treating advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma is based on the Intergroup-0099 Study published in 1998. However, the outcome for the radiotherapy-alone (RT) group in that trial was substantially poorer than those in other trials, and there were no data on late toxicities. Verification of the long-term therapeutic index of this regimen is needed. METHODS: Patients with nonkeratinizing nasopharyngeal carcinoma staged T1-4N2-3M0 were randomly assigned to RT (176 patients) or to CRT (172 patients) using

Survival differences between definitive radiotherapy and surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy in supraglottic and hypopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Organ preservation has long been a consideration in the treatment of supraglottic and hypopharyngeal carcinoma to improve the quality of life (QOL). Definitive radiotherapy (DRT) with or without systematic treatment, such as chemotherapy, is always the first choice to achieve improved QOL. This retrospective study focused on the survival differences between DRT and surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy (S + RT) in supraglottic and hypopharyngeal carcinoma. METHODS: This study included adult patients with supraglottic or hypopharyngeal carcinoma undergoing single-modality treat

A meta-analysis of the efficacy of postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy versus no radiotherapy for extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: The benefit of adjuvant radiotherapy (ART) for extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (EHCC) and gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is unclear, with conflicting results from nonrandomized studies. We reported a meta-analysis to determine the impact of adjuvant radiotherapy on survival. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and CNKI databases were searched to identify clinical trials of postoperative ART versus no radiotherapy for EHCC and GBC. The obtained data were analyzed using RevMan 5.3 and Stata 14.0 statistical software. Differences between two groups were estimated by calculating the

Skin-sparing helical tomotherapy vs 3D-conformal radiotherapy for adjuvant breast radiotherapy: in vivo skin dosimetry study.

PURPOSE: We investigated whether treatment-planning system (TPS)-calculated dose accurately reflects skin dose received for patients receiving adjuvant breast radiotherapy (RT) with standard three-dimensional conformal RT (3D-CRT) or skin-sparing helical tomotherapy (HT). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Fifty patients enrolled in a randomized controlled trial investigating acute skin toxicity from adjuvant breast RT with 3D-CRT compared to skin-sparing HT, where a 5-mm strip of ipsilateral breast skin was spared. Thermoluminescent dosimetry or optically stimulated luminescence measurements were made i

Adjuvant intraoperative electron radiotherapy and external beam radiotherapy for locally advanced transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter.

OBJECTIVE: Surgery is the mainstay treatment for transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the ureter; however, local recurrence remains a common cause of treatment failure for locally advanced disease after surgery, and the benefit of adjuvant radiotherapy has not been completely determined. The objective of this analysis was to evaluate the outcome of postsurgical high dose radiotherapy consisting of intraoperative electron beam radiotherapy (IOERT) and external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) in locally advanced transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter. METHODS: Seventeen patients with pathologically

Meta-analysis of adjuvant radiotherapy for intracranial atypical and malignant meningiomas.

INTRODUCTION: Meningiomas comprise 33% of all CNS tumors. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes meningiomas as benign (BM), atypical (AM), and malignant/anaplastic (MM). High-grade meningiomas such as AMs and MMs are more aggressive, recur more frequently, and portend a worse prognosis than BMs. Currently, the standard treatment for high-grade meningiomas, especially AMs, is ill-defined. In particular, the benefit to survival outcomes of adjuvant radiotherapy post-surgical resection remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of adjuvant radiotherapy (ART) post-surgery o

Adjuvant radiotherapy for vulvar cancer with close or positive surgical margins.

BACKGROUND: The survival effect of adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) for vulvar cancer has been poorly investigated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a multicentre retrospective register study of 257 patients with primary squamous vulvar cancer. The survival effect of adjuvant RT was investigated in two groups of patients, dependent on surgical margins. The outcome measure was overall survival. All statistical tests were two-sided. RESULTS: Of the 257 patients investigated, 192 had negative resection margins, while positive and/or close surgical margins were observed in 65 cases. Margin status wa

[PROGNOSTIC SIGNIFICANCE OF ADJUVANT RADIOTHERAPY IN EARLY IB1 STAGE CERVICAL CANCER].

The cervical cancer is one of the most common malignancies. Worldwide 500,000 women a year become ill from cervical cancer. The aim of the study was to establish the role of adjuvant radiotherapy in patients with IB1 cervical cancer in terms of disease free survival. Between 2002-2012, 132 patients diagnosed as IB1 stage according to FIGO criteria were enrolled in the study. Depending on the administered therapy the patients were divided into two groups--Group 1-93 patients were treated surgically and with adjuvant radiotherapy and Group 2--39 patients were treated surgically without adjuvant
