Distal radius fractures are associated with high individual and socioeconomic relevance. Optimized radiography and computed tomography (CT) imaging are essential for individualized therapy planning. Plain CT imaging with 3D reconstruction and digital removal of the carpus and ulna is helpful for choosing the surgical approach in the presence of intra-articular radius fractures. If the fracture line leads towards the scapholunate compartment, ligamentous injury requiring treatment can be detected or ruled out before surgery with the help of direct CT arthrography (CTA). Acquisition of imaging d

Background and purpose - The reliability of conventional radiography when classifying distal radius fractures (DRF) is fair to moderate. We investigated whether reliability increases when additional computed tomography scans (CT) are used. Patients and methods - In this prospective study, we performed pre- and postreduction posterior-anterior and lateral radiographs of 51 patients presenting with a displaced DRF. The case was included when there was a (questionable) indication for surgical treatment and an additional CT was conducted within 5 days. 4 observers assessed the cases using the Fryk

BACKGROUND: Concomitant ipsilateral hip and distal radius fractures are uncommon, and little research has been published about these injuries. Our aim was to evaluate the characteristics and results of treatment for these injuries.
METHODS: Between 2006 and 2012, 35 concomitant hip and distal radius fractures were identified, comprising the study group. The characteristics and results of treatment for these injuries were evaluated and analyzed. Another matched control group with isolated hip fractures was collected for comparison of patient characteristics, fall mechanism, fracture pattern, b

Volar plating has become the standard of care for most distal radius fractures. When done for the right indication and with adequate mastering of the technique complication ratio is low. The concept of subchondral support is key in this technique. Osteoporotic patients will especially benefit from this type of fixation which allows early immobilization, quick return to activities of daily living and early good outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Distal radius fractures are among the most common fractures encountered in clinical practice. Although multiple epidemiological studies have been done in Western populations, there is a lack of data within Asia. Our study aims to fill this knowledge gap.
METHODS: This study included all patients aged 16 years and above with distal radius fractures seen between November 2008 and May 2009 by the Department of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery at the Singapore National University Hospital. A retrospective analysis was done. Information captured included clinical data, hand dominanc

Most fractures of the distal radius are treated with closed reduction and casting. Locking plates are the most common method of fixation. In young persons and in elderly persons with functional activity above that of their age level, a <10 degrees dorsal or <20 degrees volar angle of tilt, a radial shortening of <2 mm, a radial inclination of >15 degrees and an intra-articular step-off or gap of <1 to 2 mm are regarded as an acceptable limit of position of the radius. In persons over 65 years of age the functioning of the hand can usually be restored with casting.

Distal radius fractures are one of the most common types of fractures. Although the pediatric and elderly populations are at greatest risk for this injury, distal radius fractures still have a significant impact on the health and well-being of young adults. Data from the past 40 years have documented a trend toward an overall increase in the prevalence of this injury in both the pediatric and elderly populations. Understanding the epidemiology of this fracture is an important step toward the improvement of treatment strategies and the development of preventive measures with which to target thi

The incidence of distal radius fractures is increasing together with the average age of population. Intra-articular incongruity is the most probable cause of unsatisfactory outcome of distal radius fractures in younger and more active patients. Thus, the main goal in the treatment of distal radius fractures should be restoration of articular congruence. A computed tomography (CT) is recommended to help surgeon in preoperative planning in the treatment of comminuted intra-articular fractures. New implants have been designed to provide stable enough fixation for early mobilisation after surgery

Arthroscopy has the advantage of providing a direct and accurate assessment of the articular surfaces and detecting the presence of injuries associated with distal radius fractures. Current indications, although numerous and potentially expanding, also are controversial. This report presents a global view of the current status of arthroscopy in the management of distal radius fractures. The rationale of arthroscopic treatment, the available evidence, and finally the diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

A dorsal approach to the distal radius for comminuted intra-articular fractures affords excellent exposure of the joint surface. Dorsal plating can reliably buttress the joint, leading to low rates of arthrosis, but at the expense of wrist stiffness and high rates of extensor tendon problems. New, smaller implants may prove capable of supporting the joint with lower rates of extensor irritation.

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2004eng
Fracture of distal radius is most commonly an injury of the fit osteoporotic patient. As the population and health of older individuals continue to expand, osteoporotic distal radius fractures will become increasingly common. While many older patients have limited functional demands and can accept some deformity and wrist dysfunction, others remain very active into older age and desire optimal wrist alignment and function. The difficulty obtaining reliable fixation in osteoporotic bone presents a challenge to the surgeon that has been partially addressed by newer implants with screws that dire

External skeletal fixation is an important minimal invasive procedure in the management of fractures at the distal end of the radius. Attention to detail is important not only in the recognition of indications and function of the external fixator but also in its specific application. To improve anatomical restoration (e.g. palmar tilt) multi-planar ligamentotaxis is recommended. The demonstrated dynamic fixator is easy to apply and the double ball joint facilitates reduction after mounting by multi-planar ligamentotaxis. This transarticular unilateral external fixation system permits restorati

In Colles' fractures of the radius the distal fragment is slanted dorsally and radially, dislocated dorsally and radially and supinated. The radius is shortened. Furthermore a comminution-zone of the dorsal cortex is found. In closed reduction the fracture is unwedged and reduced by recreating the mechanism of trauma in neutral position, rather a light dorsiflection is maintained to check secondary dislocation of the distal fragment and shortening of the radius. The cast should push the carpus slightly palmwards and hold the hand in light ulnar-duction. Immobilization is retained for four to s

BACKGROUND: Radius shaft greenstick fractures in children can be a challenging injury to treat because angulation and rotational alignment are difficult to assess.
METHODS: In this report, we describe a simple method for analyzing the deformity and identifying rotational and angular malalignment. This technique involves analyzing the forearm radiographs as 2 segments, proximal and distal, and assuring that the rotational position of each matches the other.
RESULTS: We present 3 cases of proximal radius greenstick fractures in malalignment to demonstrate the radius crossover sign.
CONCLUSION

Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are among the most common upper extremity injuries. Multiple medical conditions now are evaluated by standardized outcome sets that enable comparability. Recent international working groups have provided consensus statements for outcomes measurement after DRFs. These statements emphasized the growing importance of patient-reported outcome measures as well as traditional measures, including pain assessment, radiographic alignment, performance, and assessment of complications. A standardized instrument and timeline for measuring outcomes following DRFs offers clini

Metadiaphyseal proximal radius fractures blur the distinction between the radial neck and radial shaft fractures. Operative management presents unique technical challenges both in terms of surgical approach and fixation method. We discuss relevant anatomy, safe surgical approach, and options and techniques for fracture fixation. We describe 6 patients who achieved satisfactory functional outcomes, even in cases of severe bone loss secondary to ballistic trauma. An extensile dorsal approach with exposure of the posterior interosseous nerve is recommended when normal soft tissue intervals have n
