The bioaerosols contamination bind to PM2.5 leads to significant ecological and public health concerns, but studies on the bioaerosols contamination bind to PM2.5 during landfill leachate treatment are rare. This study comprehensively investigated the behavior of PM2.5-bound bioaerosols and the potential pathogenicity that subsequently occurs during landfill leachate treatment. The results revealed that the mass concentration of PM2.5 was the lowest in the evaporation treatment workshop (ETW) and the highest in the biochemical treatment workshop (BTW). Burkholderia and Aureobasidium were the d

BACKGROUND: Pharmaceutical cleanrooms remain vulnerable to microbial contamination introduced through environmental and personnel-associated pathways, yet the genomic characteristics and transmission dynamics of these contaminants are not well defined.
METHODS: In this study, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was applied to characterize microbial populations across a sterile vaccine production line. We adopted an integrated strategy that combined routine environmental monitoring with targeted genomic investigation, mapping the overall distribution of microorganisms and prioritizing isolates showi

The biosynthesis of bacteria-supported manganese nanoparticles is an inexpensive and environmentally friendly method for producing metal nanocatalysts, which exhibit excellent performance in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and the degradation of fluoroquinolone antibiotics while alleviating ion leakage issues. Manganese oxide is synthesized in situ by bacteria. This study presents a novel approach for synthesizing bacteria-supported manganese oxide (BMOx) using the heavy metal-resistant bacterium Ralstonia pickettii. The biogenic BMOx effectively activates PMS to achieve 97.6% degradation e

Copper-containing nitrite reductases (CuNiRs) catalyse the reduction of nitrite to nitric oxide and are a key enzyme in the anaerobic ammonium oxidation and denitrification steps of the nitrogen cycle. The recent recognition of the widespread distribution of three-domain CuNiRs where cognate redox partners are fused to the core NiR enzyme offered the possibility of studying coordinated events (e.g. proton-coupled electron transfer) in a conformationally stable donor-acceptor complex. The C-terminal cytochrome c tethered domain of the CuNiR from Ralstonia pickettii (RpNiR) has been well studied

AIMS: The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize new bacteriophages that infect a wide range of plant pathogenic Ralstonia solanacearum strains.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifteen bacteriophages were isolated from pepper, tomato and tobacco plant rhizospheres infected with R. solanacearum. A host specificity analysis of the isolated phages using nine strains of R. solanacearum indicated great phage diversity in a single soil. Two phages, PE226 and TM227, showed clear plaques on all nine bacterial hosts tested and were virtually identical in morphology and genome. PE226, an Inovirus, is a

As the provision of potable water is critical for successful habitation of the International Space Station (ISS), life support systems were installed in December 2008 to recycle both humidity from the atmosphere and urine to conserve available water in the Station. In-flight pre-consumption testing from the dispensing needle at the Potable Water Dispenser (PWD) indicated that bacterial concentrations exceeded the current ISS specifications of 50 colony-forming units (CFU) ml(-1). Subsequent investigations revealed that a corrugated stainless steel flex hose upstream of the dispensing needle in

BACKGROUND: The legacy of plant growth significantly impacts the health of subsequent plants, yet the mechanisms by which soil legacies in crop rotation systems influence disease resistance through rhizosphere plant-microbiome interactions remain unclear. Using a buckwheat-cabbage rotation model, we investigated how microbial soil legacies shape cabbage growth and clubroot disease resistance.
RESULTS: Three-year field trials revealed that buckwheat rotation sustainably reduced clubroot severity by 67%-97%, regardless of pathogen load. Soil sterilization eliminated this suppression, implicatin

Ceftazidime is the antibiotic of choice for the treatment of melioidosis. Ceftazidime-resistant Burkholderia pseudomallei have been identified and beta-lactamase production implicated in resistance. In this study, 25 strains of B. pseudomallei (15 clinical and 10 environmental strains) were examined for their ability to yield mutants that overexpress beta-lactamase. Ceftazidime-resistant mutants were selected readily at high frequency and displayed four- to eight-fold increases in the MICs of ceftazidime. beta-Lactamase activities in both parent and mutant B. pseudomallei strains were examined

Fiber morphology and crystalline structure of poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] (P(3HB)) and stereocomplexed poly(lactide) (PLA) nanofibers were investigated by using scanning and transmission electron microscopies and X-ray and electron diffractions. In the P(3HB) nanofibers spun from less than 1 wt% 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) solution, planar zigzag conformation (beta-form) as well as 2(1) helix conformation (alpha-form) structure was formed. Based on the electron diffraction measurement of single P(3HB) nanofiber, it was revealed that the molecular chains of P(3HB) align parallel to

A one-step technological system containing activated sludge fed with synthetic domestic wastewater was applied to treat waste air polluted with tetrachloroethene (PCE). In the first stage of the experiment, air passed through a bioscrubber; in the second and third stages, it passed through the bioreactor containing activated sludge and bacteria immobilised in oak chips. These bacteria are active in PCE biodegradation. Process efficiency in the final stage of the experiment was high; the elimination capacity was 0.23 g m-3 h-1 with the PCE mass loading rate of 0.58 g m-3 h-1. It has been shown

The potential of trichloroethylene (TCE) to induce and non-aromatic growth substrates to support TCE degradation in five strains (Pseudomonas mendocina KR1, Ralstonia pickettii PKO1, Pseudomonas putida F1, Burkholderia cepacia G4, B. cepacia PR1) of toluene-oxidizing bacteria was examined. LB broth and acetate did not support TCE degradation in any of the wild-type strains. In contrast, fructose supported the highest specific levels of TCE oxidation observed in each of the strains tested, except B. cepacia G4. We discuss the potential mechanisms and implications of this observation. In particu

To evaluate the activity of pyrrolidonyl arylamidase (PYR) for the differentiation and identification of nonfermenting gram negative rods (NFGNR), 293 isolates were tested. A 24 h culture of each test organism was prepared. From this a 108-109 cfu/mL suspension was added to 0.25 mL of sterile physiologic solution. A PYR disk was then added and the test was incubated for 30 minutes at 35-37 degrees C, at environmental atmosphere. Reading was done by adding 1 drop of cinnamaldehyde reagent. Strains of Acinetobacter baumannii, Acinetobacter haemolyticus, Alcaligenes faecalis, Bergeyella zoohelcum

This study assessed the extent of beta-lactamase-producing bacteria in subgingival plaque samples obtained from 25 patients with refractory marginal periodontitis in the USA. beta-Lactamase-positive isolates were characterized using commercial diagnostic kits and partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The susceptibilities to different antimicrobial agents were tested and, in addition, the isolates were screened for the presence of extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs). beta-lactamase-producing bacteria were detected in 18 (72%) patients. The most prominent beta-lactamase-producing organi

The bioremediation of polluted groundwater and toxic waste sites requires that bacteria come into close physical contact with pollutants. This can be accomplished by chemotaxis. Five motile strains of bacteria that use five different pathways to degrade toluene were tested for their ability to detect and swim towards this pollutant. Three of the five strains (Pseudomonas putida F1, Ralstonia pickettii PKO1, and Burkholderia cepacia G4) were attracted to toluene. In each case, the response was dependent on induction by growth with toluene. Pseudomonas mendocina KR1 and P. putida PaW15 did not s

Thaxtomin A is the main phytotoxin produced by Streptomyces scabies, a causal agent of potato scab. Thaxtomin A is a yellow compound composed of 4-nitroindol-3-yl-containing 2,5-dioxopiperazine. A collection of nonpathogenic streptomycetes isolated from potato tubers and microorganisms recovered from a thaxtomin A solution were examined for the ability to grow in the presence of thaxtomin A as a sole carbon or nitrogen source. Three bacterial isolates and two fungal isolates grew in thaxtomin A-containing media. Growth of these organisms resulted in decreases in the optical densities at 400 nm

This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary isatidis root polysaccharide (IRP) on diarrhea, immunity, and intestinal health in weanling piglets. Forty healthy piglets were randomly assigned to five groups receiving varying dosages of IRP. The findings indicated that different concentrations of IRP significantly reduced diarrhea scores (p < 0.01). Notably, the serum levels of immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin G increased linearly and quadratically (p < 0.01), while immunoglobulin M also showed a linear increase (p < 0.05) in IRP-fed piglets. The secretory immunoglobulin A levels in

Resident bacterial interactions can shape the invasion resistance of rhizosphere microbiomes, but whether interactions between weakly antagonistic resident bacteria can generate emergent antagonism against invading pathogens remains poorly understood. Here, we used a systematic pairwise interaction screening to identify Ralstonia pickettii RAL5 and Acinetobacter oleivorans ACI4 bacterial pair, that together provided a strong suppression of the phytopathogenic R. solanacearum Rs1115 strain. Although RAL5 and ACI4 monocultures only weakly inhibited pathogen growth, the RAL5-ACI4 co-cultures stro
