BACKGROUND: Long-term static stretching as well as foam rolling training can increase a joint's range of motion (ROM). However, to date, it is not clear which method is the most effective for increasing ROM.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the effects of static stretching and foam rolling training on ROM.
METHODS: The literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to find the eligible studies. Eighty-five studies (72 on static stretching; and 13 on foam rolling) were found to be eligible with 204 effect sizes (ESs). For

Hamstring extensibility has been defined as a factor to diminished dynamic stability and therefore increased risk of injury. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effects of hamstring tightness and fatigue on dynamic stability and agility. Nineteen participants were divided between the normal extensibility group (NEG) (n = 9, 82.2° ± 12.4°) and hamstrings tightness group (HTG) (n = 10, 64° ± 4.9°) using the passive straight leg raise test. To analyse dynamic stability and agility, they performed the modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) and Dynamic Postural Stability Index (DPSI)

Dupuytren's disease (DD) is a chronic benign fibroproliferative disorder of the palmar and digital fasciae. It is characterized by formation of nodules and fibrous cords that may eventually lead to contractures with permanent flexion of the finger joints. Correction of the flexion contractures in advanced disease is still performed by open limited fasciectomy; ultrasonography (US)-guided minimally invasive treatment is preferred for early disease. We provide an overview of the detailed anatomy of the palmar aponeurosis and the structures that may be involved in DD. Although magnetic resonance i

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The diagnosis of equine back disorders is challenging. Objectively determining movement of the vertebral column may therefore be of value in a clinical setting.
OBJECTIVES: To establish whether surface-mounted inertial measurement units (IMUs) can be used to establish normal values for range of motion (ROM) of the vertebral column in a uniform population of horses trotting under different conditions.
STUDY DESIGN: Vertebral ROM was established in Franches-Montagnes stallions and a general population of horses and the variability in measurements compared between

The diagnosis of gastrocnemius tightness is primarily clinical using the Silfverskiold test, which shows an equinus deformity at the ankle with the knee extended but that disappears with the knee flexed. The manner in which the Silfverskiold test is performed must be consistent with respect to the applied strength of the maneuver, correction of a flexible hindfoot valgus deformity while performing the test, and reproducibility. Although this is a diagnosis based on the clinical examination, this article presents additional clinical signs that can help to make the diagnosis when the retraction

INTRODUCTION: Malunion of intra-articular fracture of the elbow in children is uncommon and may be difficult to treat. Intra-articular corrective osteotomies are still not commonly performed in children, and the main reason is the concern regarding the risk of osteonecrosis. We present a case of extra-articular corrective osteotomy for malunion after open reduction and internal fixation for fracture dislocation of the elbow.
CASE REPORT: An 8-year-old boy was injured by a fall and he underwent an operation the day after the injury with diagnosis of lateral condyle fracture of the right humeru

BACKGROUND: A mid-fidelity simulation mannequin, equipped with an instrumented cervical and lumbar spine, was developed to investigate best practices and train healthcare professionals in applying spinal motion restrictions (SMRs) during the early mobilization and transfer of accident victims with suspected spine injury. The study objectives are to (1) examine accuracy of the cervical and lumbar motions measured with the mannequin; and (2) confirm that the speed of motion has no bearing on this accuracy.
METHODS: Accuracy was evaluated by concurrently comparing the orientation data obtained w

The invention of inertial measurement units allowed the construction of sensors suitable for human motion tracking that are more affordable than expensive optical motion capture systems, but there are a few factors influencing their accuracy, such as the calibration methods and the fusion algorithms used to translate sensor readings into angles. The main purpose of this study was to test the accuracy of a single RSQ Motion sensor in comparison to a highly precise industrial robot. The secondary objectives were to test how the type of sensor calibration affects its accuracy and whether the time

BACKGROUND: Shoulder pain commonly has a detrimental impact on patient's work and social activities. Although pain is the most common reason for seeking care, a reduction in shoulder range of motion (ROM) is another common impairment. ROM assessment is used as an evaluation tool and multiple methods are available to measure shoulder ROM. Virtual reality (VR) has been introduced into shoulder rehabilitation, mostly when exercise and ROM measurement is indicated. This study evaluated the concurrent validity and system reliability of active ROM measurements of VR for people with and without shoul

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the individual contributions to stability of the superficial and deep deltoid ligaments in the setting of SER IV ankle fractures.
METHODS: Nineteen total cadaveric specimens were used. SER IV injuries were created with the rupture of either the superficial (SER IV-S) (n = 9) or deep deltoid (SER IV-D) (n = 10). These were tested by applying an external rotation force (1 Nm, 2 Nm, 3 Nm, and 4 Nm). Changes in the position of the talus were recorded with a 3D motion tracker. Injury conditions were compared with a 4-step general linear model with repeated measures. Injury c

Osteochondral lesion of the talar dome (OCLT) can be a devastating injury that affects mobility. Etiology of these lesions is debated but trauma seems the most supported etiology. Diagnosis of lesions is based on imaging. Conservative management, including weight-bearing restrictions, physical therapy, and supportive measures, often is first-line treatment. Nonsurgical modalities have mixed results and surgical measures often are necessitated for symptom relief. Surgical treatments vary in invasiveness and often are dictated by OCLT size. Studies show patient satisfaction increases substantial

PURPOSE: The purpose of this cadaveric study was to evaluate the function of the ligamentum teres (LT) in limiting hip rotation in 18 distinct hip positions while preserving the capsular ligaments.
METHODS: Twelve hips in 6 fresh-frozen pelvis-to-toes cadaveric specimens were skeletonized from the lumbar spine to the distal femur, preserving only the hip ligaments. Hip joints were arthroscopically accessed through a portal located between the pubofemoral and iliofemoral ligaments to confirm the integrity of the LT. Three independent measurements of hip internal and external rotation range of

Limited range of motion of the mandible secondary to intra-articular problems has become an accepted indication for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroscopy. The authors have looked at 297 patients over a 2 1/2 year follow-up period. The patients were subdivided by their initial opening measurement (10-20 mm or 20-30 mm). The post-operative improvement of these patients was then evaluated. Furthermore, multiple variables were used to look at the effect of surgical procedures, diagnosis and other associated clinical findings on outcome. In conclusion, the authors found that the range of motion

Background: Intra-articular fractures of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) can result in poor outcomes if inadequately treated. Dynamic external fixation and internal fixation with plates and/or screws are two treatment options. The role of combining these two methods is unclear. The aim of this study is to determine the outcomes of patients with intra-articular fractures of the PIPJ treated with a combination of dynamic external fixation with a plate and/or screws. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 18 consecutive cases of intra-articular fractures of the PIPJ treated wi
