PURPOSE: To review the outcome of head-and-neck cancer patients re-irradiated using conformal radiation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1983 to 1999, 60 patients with recurrent or new primary head-and-neck cancer received re-irradiation at the University of Michigan. Twenty patients were excluded due to the planned cumulative radiation dose being less than 100 Gy (18) and absence of prior radiation details (2), leaving 40 patients. Thirty-five patients were re-irradiated for unresectable disease, while 4 patients received adjuvant re-irradiation for high-risk disease. Thirty-eight patients had re

OBJECTIVE: Stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) is an established treatment option in oligometastatic liver disease. Limited data exist on liver SABR re-irradiation (re-SABR). MR-guided SABR with daily plan adaptation and deformable image registration (DIR) allows organ-at-risk (OAR) sparing and dose accumulation in a re-irradiation setting. We report the safety and efficacy of MR-guided re-SABR in oligometastatic liver disease, alongside a DIR-based workflow for cumulative OAR dose calculation.
METHODS: MR-guided re-SABR to oligometastatic liver disease was retrospectively analysed

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify patient-, tumor-, or treatment-related factors which may affect disease-related outcomes of re-irradiation (reRT) in patients with previously irradiated vertebral metastases.
METHODS: A computerized search of the literature was performed by searching for terms related to reRT and spinal metastases in MEDLINE, EMBASE, OVID, and the Cochrane database from 1995 to 2019. Studies including at least 10 patients who had received reRT at the same site of initial radiotherapy for vertebral metastases with localized external beam radiotherapy were included

BACKGROUND: The rate of locoregional recurrence after primary therapy remains at 5-15%. Ipsilateral recurrences are most commonly located in the residual breast or chest wall, followed by isolated nodal axillary and supraclavicular recurrences at 1-3%. In pre-irradiated patients with inoperable recurrences, re-radio(chemo)therapy can achieve sufficient local tumor control.
METHODS: All inoperable patients with histologically confirmed locoregional recurrence (LRR) who underwent salvage radio(chemo)therapy at the University Medical Center Freiburg were included in this analysis. A descriptive

Between 1972 and 1984, 123 patients with recurrent or new primary carcinomas in previously irradiated areas of soft palate, tonsil, base of tongue or mobile tongue were re-irradiated with iridium-192 afterloading techniques. The average re-irradiation dose was 62 Gy (31-84 Gy) and the total dose 131 Gy (92-162 Gy); only 28 cases of mucosal necrosis were observed (23%). Two and 5 years actuarial local control rates were 67% and 59% and survival rates 48% and 24% respectively. Death was related to local tumor in 48 cases, metastases in 8 cases and intercurrent disease in 39 cases. We analyzed th

Mice immunized by percutaneous exposure to ultraviolet-irradiated Schistosoma mansoni cercariae developed levels of resistance to subsequent S. mansoni infection comparable to those induced by gamma-irradiated cercariae (50-70% reduction in adult worm burden). Cercariae treated with ultraviolet doses ranging from one to three times the minimum dose required to prevent long-term survival induced the highest levels of resistance.

INTRODUCTION: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common adult primary malignant brain tumour. The condition is incurable and, despite aggressive treatment at first presentation, almost all tumours recur after a median of 7 months. The aim of treatment at recurrence is to prolong survival and maintain health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Chemotherapy is typically employed for recurrent GBM, often using nitrosourea-based regimens. However, efficacy is limited, with reported median survivals between 5 and 9 months from recurrence. Although less commonly used in the UK, there is growing evidence th

PURPOSE: Re-irradiation (re-RT) for recurrent intracranial meningiomas is hindered by the limited radiation tolerance of surrounding tissue and the risk of side effects. This study aimed at assessing outcomes, toxicities and prognostic factors in a cohort of patients with recurrent meningiomas re-treated with different RT modalities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multi-institutional database from 8 Italian centers including intracranial recurrent meningioma (RM) patients who underwent re-RT with different modalities (SRS, SRT, PT, EBRT) was collected. Biologically Equivalent Dose in 2 Gy-fractions

OBJECTIVE This study is a multi-institutional pooled analysis specific to imaging-based local control of spinal metastases in patients previously treated with conventional external beam radiation therapy (cEBRT) and then treated with re-irradiation stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) to the spine as salvage therapy, the largest such study to date. METHODS The authors reviewed cases involving 215 patients with 247 spinal target volumes treated at 7 institutions. Overall survival was calculated on a patient basis, while local control was calculated based on the spinal target volume treated, bo

BACKGROUND: Patients treated for a thoracic malignancy carry a significant risk of developing other lung lesions. Locoregional control of intrathoracic recurrences is challenging due to the impact of prior therapies on normal tissues. We examined the safety and efficacy of thoracic re-irradiation using high-precision image-guided stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).
METHODS: Records of 39 patients with prior intra-thoracic conventionally fractionated radiation therapy (RT) who underwent SBRT for a subsequent primary, recurrent or metastatic lung tumor from 11/2004 to 7/2011 were retros

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the palliative efficacy of re-irradiation stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for painful spinal metastases.
METHODS: In this single-centre, single-arm, phase II study, patients with painful spinal metastases (pain score ≥2 on a 0-10 scale) from solid tumours were enrolled. Eligibility criteria included absence of epidural spinal cord compression, and irradiation history (excluding SBRT) with an interval of ≥3 months. The prescribed dose was 24 Gy in two fractions; the maximum spinal cord dose constraint was 12.2 Gy. The primary endpoint was the pain response rate at

BACKGROUND: Re-irradiation is increasingly applied in prostate cancer management, supported by improved techniques and radiobiological modeling. Accurate cumulative dose estimation is crucial for predicting late OAR side effects. This study introduces an adaptive workflow that integrates session-based dose accumulation with EQD2/BED conversion to enhance side effect prediction.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 15 patients with recurrent prostate cancer was performed. The first course used conventional fractionation followed by hypofractionated re-irradiation. Two cumulative dose evaluatio

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Re-irradiation in head neck cancers (HNCs) requires a delicate balance between adequate dose to recurrent tumor along with adequate sparing of surrounding normal tissues. Although there are several studies on re-radiation, issues pertaining to factors affecting outcomes are under evaluated. The primary aim was to evaluate survival outcomes and factors affecting it in re-irradiated HNCs treated with intensity modulated radiotherapy at our center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patient and disease factors affecting survival were collected and evaluated for 65 re-irradiation case

INTRODUCTION: Balancing the demands for dose-escalated re-irradiation with toxicity to organs at risk (OARs) is a challenge. Twice-daily (BID) accelerated hyperfractionated re-irradiation (re-RT) is a potential solution, yet there is no guidance for its application for thoracic malignancies.
METHODS: All BID thoracic re-RT cases at our institution since 2014 were reviewed. Prior radiation courses were deformably registered. Summary plan dosimetrics were extracted using per-voxel cumulative EQD2 (α/β = 3 for normal tissues). Maximum toxicity following BID re-RT was graded per CTCAE v5.0 and as
