Sequential processes and the shapes of reaction time distributions.

It is sometimes suggested that reaction time (RT) distributions have the same shape across conditions or groups. In this note we show that this is highly unlikely if the RT is the sum of the stochastically independent durations of 2 or more stages (sequential processes) (a) that are influenced selectively by different factors, or (b) 1 of which is influenced selectively by some factor. We provide an example of substantial shape differences in RT data from a flash-detection experiment, data that have been shown to satisfy requirement (a). Ignoring these requirements, we also note that in a larg

Reaction time and rhythm of movement in Huntington's disease.

Huntington disease (HD) is characterized by several hyperkinesias though motor slowness is also another cardinal in this disease. In addition, self-paced timing movements are also disturbed in HD, which may also affect several rhythmic voluntary movements such as gait. Motor slowness can be measured with clinical scales such as the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) and timed tests, but also with the reaction time (RT) paradigm. We evaluated RT as a measure of motor slowness in 30 patients with genetically confirmed Huntington's disease and 24 control subjects. We also evaluated

Hyperthymic temperament and rapid reaction time in brightness preference.

BACKGROUND: It is well-known that Type A behavior pattern is characterized by hard-driving, competitive behavior and time urgency. Also, people with hyperthymic temperament are known to have high energy levels and are full of plans. It is therefore hypothesized that hyperthymic temperament is associated with rapid processing and fast reaction time in making decisions. METHODS: Using data from our previous experimental studies (N=58) examining brightness judgment and brightness preference, reaction time (RT) was investigated in relation to hyperthymic temperament scores and fMRI signal changes

[Reaction time in relation to duration of heroin abuse].

INTRODUCTION: Consequences of heroin abuse include organic damage of cerebral structures. The level of impairments is in a direct and positive relation with the length of heroin abuse. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was the evaluation of the reaction time with heroin addicts with different length of substance abuse. RESEARCH METHOD: 90 examinees were divided into three groups with relation to the length of heroin abuse. Data collection included a questionnaire referring to socio-demographic and addictive characteristics. A specially designed programme was used for the evaluation of reac

Corticomotor excitability during a choice-hand reaction time task.

Fourteen neurologically healthy, right-handed subjects performed a choice-hand reaction time (RT) task, which involved wrist flexion or extension of either the left or right hand to one of three fixed target locations corresponding to 45 degrees flexion, 20 degrees flexion, or 20 degrees extension from the starting position. In each trial, a pre-cue provided information regarding the forthcoming target location. The hand was specified by the imperative signal. Focal transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was delivered over the hand motor area of either the right or left hemisphere at set time

Assay of gliadin by real-time immunopolymerase chain reaction.

Patients with coeliac disease (gluten-sensitive enteropathy) are intolerant against gliadins from wheat and the respective proteins from related cereals and have to keep a lifelong gluten-free diet. For control of gliadin in gluten-free food sensitive assay techniques are necessary. We developed an immunopolymerase chain reaction (iPCR) assay for gliadin. In this technique immunological detection of gliadin by a monoclonal antibody R5 conjugated with an oligonucleotide is amplified by PCR. For quantification, iPCR was performed as real-time PCR (real-time iPCR) in one step. By means of real-ti

Effects of fetal alcohol exposure on infant reaction time.

Fetal alcohol exposure is associated with slower reaction times (RTs) in children, suggesting an alcohol-related deficit in "speed of central processing." This study examined effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on a new paradigm which, for the first time, directly assesses RT in infancy. RT was assessed in 103 Black, inner-city, 6.5-month-olds born to women recruited prenatally based on alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Maternal drinking was related to longer RTs and to fewer fast responses, after controlling for potential confounders. The incidence of fast performance was reduced in infa

Radiologic correlates of reaction time measurements in olivopontocerebellar atrophy.

We measured simple visual and auditory reaction time (RT) and movement time (MT) in 32 patients with olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) in comparison to 32 control subjects. In addition, we followed 2 approaches to radiologic assessment by computed tomographic scans: subjective (by inspection of films) and objective (by measurement of 4 radiologic ratios at the level of the posterior fossa and 1 ratio at the supratentorial level). All OPCA patients had various degrees of cerebellar atrophy and lengthened RT and MT in comparison to their controls. There were no significant differences in RT an

Reaction time variability in epileptic and brain-damaged patients.

Median reaction times and intra-individual variability were studied in epileptic (N = 63), brain-damaged (non-epileptic) (N = 25) and control patients (N = 25) using a six and one half minute visual, continuous reaction time task. Epileptic and brain-damaged groups were significantly slower than control patients on median reaction times at the 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles and on the differences between the 10th and 90th percentiles. Thus both general slowing and greater intra-individual variability were found in the epileptic and brain-damaged patients. Reaction times were not related to p

Effects of set, setting, and sedatives, on reaction time.

The effects of sessions, individual characteristics, group behavior, sedative medications, and pharmacological anticipation, on simple visual and auditory reaction time were evaluated with a randomized block design. The project involved 4 separate small groups of 5 to 9 healthy young adults who met 4 times for 9 hr. over 4 mo. and received 4 drug regimens under controlled conditions. Attitudes toward the experiment, which were mainly related to an early fear of potent drugs and late feelings of weariness, markedly affected reaction time. This effect decreased the test-retest reliability of the

Poststimulation time interval-dependent effects of motor cortex anodal tDCS on reaction-time task performance.

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) induces long-term potentiation-like plasticity, which is associated with long-lasting effects on different cognitive, emotional, and motor performances. Specifically, tDCS applied over the motor cortex is considered to improve reaction time in simple and complex tasks. The timing of tDCS relative to task performance could determine the efficacy of tDCS to modulate performance. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of a single session of anodal tDCS (1.5 mA, for 15 min) applied over the left primary motor cortex (M1) versus sham s

Evaluating Immediate Reactions to Cephalosporins: Time Is of the Essence.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed the diagnostic value of cephalosporin skin tests in patients with immediate reactions to these β-lactams. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of skin tests and challenges in assessing such subjects. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of 236 consecutive subjects who had suffered 249 immediate reactions (mostly anaphylaxis) to cephalosporins. Skin tests were performed with penicillin reagents and suspected cephalosporins. Serum specific IgE assays (ImmunoCAP) were also carried out for penicillins and cefaclor. Subjects with negative results underw

Acoustic and physiological reaction times of stutterers and nonstutterers.

This study investigates reaction times in the fluent speech utterances of stutterers and nonstutterers under several experimental conditions. Twenty adult stutterers and twenty matched controls produced utterances of three lengths--one syllable words, polysyllabic words, and sentences--in two conditions of time pressure (high and low) and two conditions of preparation (delayed and immediate responding) in a reaction-time paradigm. Recordings were made of EMG signals from the orbicularis oris inferior and from the extrinsic laryngeal area, as well as electroglottographic and acoustic signals. M

Effects of mephenytoin and methsuximide on the reaction time of pigeons.

Although antiepilepsy drugs are used clinically, their behavioral effects are poorly understood. The present study examined the effects of mephenytoin and methsuximide, two antiepilepsy medications, on the reaction times of pigeons. Pigeons were trained to depress and hold a foot treadle until a stimulus change occurred. Releases within 2 sec of the stimulus change were reinforced with access to mixed grain; premature releases or releases occurring after the 2-sec limited hold were not reinforced. Mephenytoin (40, 60, 80, 120, and 160 mg/kg) and methsuximide (25, 50, 75, and 100 mg/kg) produce

Intraoperative reaction time of the surgeon during retrograde intrarenal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Reusable flexible ureteroscopes (rfURS) are costly and fragile equipment that can be easily damaged during surgery. We aimed to investigate the change in the surgeon's reaction time during retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), which may be a risk factor for rfURS damage in prolonged cases. METHODS: The patients who underwent RIRS with rfURS by the same surgeon were prospectively included in the study and the collected data were retrospectively analyzed. A phone application program (Reflex Test 2.2.4) designed to evaluate the user's reaction time with visual color change was used t

On-body measure of reaction time correlates with intoxication level.

Excessive alcohol use has profound effects on individual health and healthcare systems worldwide. Despite this, there is currently no system or device that can detect robustly the physiologic and functional effects of alcohol-based impairment in real-world conditions. A practical, on-body, device capable of rapidly and accurately determining the functional capacity of an individual to drive, before they can start the ignition of the automobile, is required. The goal of this pilot study was to evaluate the effect of acute alcohol intoxication on premotor time (PMT) and reaction time (RT), both

Simple reaction time to visual and auditory stimulation in glaucoma.

Background/ObjectivesGlaucoma can impact the ability to perform daily life activities such as driving. In such tasks, reaction time is critical to detect hazards. Understanding the modalities that affect response times is thus essential for clinical care.Subjects/MethodSimple reaction time tasks, in which participants respond as fast as possible to a stimulus, constitute a basic measure of processing speed. Simple reaction times to visual and auditory stimuli were compared to assess whether glaucomatous patients exhibit a general slowing in execution speed or a specific slowing in response to

Using auditory reaction time to measure loudness growth in rats.

Previous studies have demonstrated that auditory reaction time (RT) is a reliable surrogate of loudness perception in humans. Reaction time-intensity (RT-I) functions faithfully recapitulate equal loudness contours in humans while being easier to obtain than equal loudness judgments, especially in animals. In humans, loudness estimation not only depends on sound intensity, but on a variety of other acoustic factors. Stimulus duration and bandwidth are known to impact loudness perception. In addition, the presence of background noise mimics loudness recruitment; loudness growth is rapid near th
