Transferrin receptor expression in benign tumours and in hepatoblastoma of the liver.

To further investigate the possible usefulness of antitransferrin receptor staining in the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant primary liver tumours, we examined the transferrin receptor expression in ten cases of focal nodular hyperplasia, six of nodular regenerative hyperplasia, two adenomas and six hepatoblastomas. In focal nodular hyperplasia, the ductular structures were always positive and the parenchymal cells displayed three staining patterns of moderate intensity. In nodular regenerative hyperplasia there was scattered, relatively weak transferrin receptor staining. Th

In vivo transferrin-iron receptor relationships in erythron of rats.

Quantitative measurements of transferrin receptors, tissue transferrin, tissue iron uptake, and erythroid cellularity have been carried out in rats with altered erythropoiesis and altered iron balance. Erythroid receptors increased with erythroid hyperplasia, with the increase in proportion to the increased number of red cell precursors in phenylhydrazine-treated rats. Receptors increased disproportionately in iron deficiency due to both erythroid hyperplasia and an increase in receptors in the individual cell. There was a ratio of 1:1 between cell-related transferrin and receptors in circulat

Apical and basolateral transferrin receptors in polarized BeWo cells recycle through separate endosomes.

Contrary to most other epithelia, trophoblasts in the human placenta, which form the physical barrier between the fetal and the maternal blood circulation, express high numbers of transferrin receptors on their apical cell surface. This study describes the establishment of a polarized trophoblast-like cell line BeWo, which exhibit a high expression of transferrin receptors on the apex of the cells. Cultured on permeable filter supports, BeWo cells formed a polarized monolayer with microvilli on their apical cell surface. Across the monolayer a transepithelial resistance developed of approximat

Expression of epidermal growth factor receptor and transferrin receptor by human trophoblast populations.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) has several roles, including stimulation of cell division and differentiation. EGF receptor (EGFR) has been localized to villous syncytiotrophoblast, but expression by other human trophoblast populations has not been reported. EGFR expression was examined in normal and pathological placental tissues using a streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase technique; results were compared with expression of transferrin receptor (Tf-R) in similar tissues. EGFR was detected on villous syncytiotrophoblast in early and term pregnancy with labelling of the apical membrane, focal cytoplas

Comparative accuracy of ferritin, transferrin saturation and soluble transferrin receptor for the diagnosis of iron deficiency in inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of iron deficiency is based on ferritin and transferrin saturation (TfS) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, yet guideline thresholds are not evidence-based. Soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) is one of the best noninvasive tests in patients with inflammation. AIMS: To evaluate the accuracy of ferritin and/or TfS for diagnosing iron deficiency in IBD and identify the optimal thresholds of these parameters using sTfR as reference. METHODS: Two hundred and two patients (2072 samples) receiving at least one infusion of biologic (vedolizumab or infliximab) we

[Effects of the chronic malnutrition on the transferrin receptors in patients with nutritional anemia].

It has been postulated that the provision of iron to the erythroid cells is under the control of a fraction of free intracellular iron. Variations in the size of this pool would send messages to either seric or cellular iron receptors aimed to keep a balance between the offer and the demand by the cells. The possibility that cell membrane receptors could be affected by chronic malnutrition was explored in these studies by the changes of iron uptake capacity of circulating mouse reticulocytes cause by the incubation of the cells with serum of either normal or anemic patients plasma donors. Detection of transferrin and C3d receptors in the skin of patients with various dermatoses.

The localization of transferrin and C3d receptors in various skin lesions and normal appearing skin have been studied on sections with the PAP technique. The transferrin receptor was recognized in the lower epidermis from psoriatic plaques. Here it was more evident than in other inflammatory or hyperproliferative disorders where it was mainly detected on the basal cells. In healthy skin or lesions of lichen planus, scleroderma and ichthyosis the transferrin receptor was not detected in the epidermis. The C3d receptor was in normal skin found on the basement membrane and on elastic fibres in th

Role of transferrin receptor from a Neisseria meningitidis tbpB isotype II strain in human transferrin binding and virulence.

Neisseria meningitidis acquires iron through the action of the transferrin (Tf) receptor, which is composed of the Tf-binding proteins A and B (TbpA and TbpB). Meningococci can be classified into isotype I and II strains depending on whether they harbor a type I or II form of TbpB. Both types of TbpB have been shown to differ in their genomic, biochemical, and antigenic properties. Here we present a comparative study of isogenic mutants deficient in either or both Tbps from the isotype I strain B16B6 and isotype II strain M982. We show that TbpA is essential in both strains for iron uptake and

Soluble Transferrin Receptor-1 in Pulmonary Hypertension Associated with COPD.

PURPOSE: The pulmonary vascular involvement of COPD ranges from severe airway obstruction without pulmonary hypertension (PH) to mild airway obstruction with severe PH. Iron-dependent molecular regulators like hypoxia-inducible factor-2 (HIF-2) may contribute to these phenotypic variations. We explored the role of soluble transferrin receptor-1 (sTfR1) for diagnosis and prognosis of PH associated with COPD. METHODS: We analyzed COPD outpatients who underwent right heart catheterization and performed unsupervised clustering analysis based on sTfR1 levels and non-invasive clinical parameters to

Transferrin receptor 1 is an entry factor for Japanese encephalitis virus.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a zoonotic pathogen that can be transmitted to humans and animals via arthropods, causing viral encephalitis. In this study, we investigated the role of transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) in JEV infection. We found that knocking down TfR1 expression in A549 and HeLa cells significantly inhibited JEV entry, while overexpression of TfR1 in 293 T cells enhanced viral entry. The JEV E protein interacts with TfR1, specifically via the protease-like domain (residues 384-606). Additionally, the hTfR1 soluble ectodomain protein significantly blocked JEV infection in HeL

Transferrin Receptor Is Necessary for Proper Oligodendrocyte Iron Homeostasis and Development.

To test the hypothesis that the transferrin (Tf) cycle has unique importance for oligodendrocyte development and function, we disrupted the expression of the Tf receptor (Tfr) gene in oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) on mice of either sex using the Cre/lox system. This ablation results in the elimination of iron incorporation via the Tf cycle but leaves other Tf functions intact. Mice lacking Tfr, specifically in NG2 or Sox10-positive OPCs, developed a hypomyelination phenotype. Both OPC differentiation and myelination were affected, and Tfr deletion resulted in impaired OPC iron absorp

Associations between serum soluble transferrin receptor and the prevalence of cancers.

BACKGROUND: As increasing experimental evidence suggests that iron metabolism play crucial roles in cancer and non-cancer conditions, there is a lack of data on serum soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), a promising marker representing unmet cellular iron demands, between cancer risk from epidemiological studies. Here, we aimed to evaluate the predictive value of sTfR and cancer prevalence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed on 5,480 adult participants from 2015 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Role of Soluble Transferrin Receptor - An Iron Marker in Hemodialysis Patients.

BACKGROUND: Iron status assessment is crucial in end-stage renal disease hemodialysis (ESRD-HD) patients because iron deficiency may cause unresponsiveness to erythropoiesis-stimulating agent. Soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) is a potential iron marker that is not influenced by inflammation, and the results among studies are still conflicting. This study evaluated the role of sTfR in determining iron deficiency in ESRD-HD patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Hemodialysis Unit in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Indonesia, from August to September 2018 and included

[Why are soluble transferrin receptor levels increased in Biermer's anemia?].

This report is devoted to a case report where a pernicious anemia is diagnostic associated with an increased soluble transferrin receptors. The soluble transferring receptor measurement represents a significant advance in assessment of iron status, specially in the diagnosis of iron deficiency associated with inflammation, but also in the evaluation of red blood mass during erythroid hyperplasias.

Regulation of transferrin receptor 2 in human cancer cell lines.

In a recent study we have explored TfR2 expression in a panel of cancer cell lines and we observed that about 40% of these cell lines clearly express TfR2. Taking advantage of this observation and considering the frequent overexpression of c-Myc in cancer cells we have explored the existence of a possible relationship between c-Myc and TfR2 in these cell lines. Our results provided evidence that TfR2(+) cell lines express low c-Myc levels and low TfR1 levels, while TfR2(-) cell lines express high c-Myc and TfR1 levels. Using the erythroleukemic K562 TfR2(+) cells as a model, we observed that a

The diagnostic role of serum transferrin receptor in patients with various anemia.

BACKGROUND: Serum ferritin is known as a good tool to diagnose iron status. Recently the soluble serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) has been introduced as a promising new tool for diagnosing iron depletion. The present study was to compare the differential diagnostic values of sTfR and other related parameters in different causes of anemia. METHODS: Two hundred and nine subjects enrolled into this study were divided into 7 groups. Group A included 50 healthy controls; Group B included 54 patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA); Group C included 34 patients with anemia of chronic disorders (

Transferrin in normal and neoplastic endocervical tissues: distribution and receptor expression.

OBJECTIVE: Our recent studies showed that lactoferrin seems to be down-regulated in endocervical adenocarcinomas. We extended those studies to examine the expression of transferrin (Tf) and its receptor (TfR) in endocervical carcinogenesis and any relationship to the expression of lactoferrin, steroid receptors and the proliferative index. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study was performed using sections prepared from paraffin-embedded, formalin-fixed surgical specimens of normal endocervix, endocervical adenocarcinoma and cervical adenocarcinoma in situ. Alpha thalassaemia is associated with increased soluble transferrin receptor levels.

Although alpha+ thalassaemia is the commonest haemoglobinopathy in the world, it is not known if it is associated with significant ineffective erythropoiesis, a fact of importance in interpreting its complex interaction with malaria. To study this problem, we have measured the concentrations of soluble transferrin receptor (sTIR) and ferritin in 181 children from Vanuatu with heterozygous (68) and homozygous (46) alpha+ thalassaemia, and normal controls (67). sTfR concentrations were significantly higher in both homozygotes (mean 3.1 mg/l, range 2.8-3.4) and heterozygotes (2.86 mg/l, 2.6-3.2)
