Rapid forgetting of faces in congenital prosopagnosia.

Congenital prosopagnosia (CP) is a life-long impairment in face recognition that occurs in the absence of any known brain damage. It is still unclear whether this disorder is related to a visual deficit, or to an impairment in encoding, maintaining or retrieving a face from memory. We tested CPs and matched neurotypical controls using a delayed estimation task in which a target face was shown either upright or inverted. Participants were asked to select the target face out of a cyclic space of morphed faces that could either resemble the target face, or not. The inclusion of upright and invert

Grouping in object recognition: the role of a Gestalt law in letter identification.

The Gestalt psychologists reported a set of laws describing how vision groups elements to recognize objects. The Gestalt laws "prescribe for us what we are to recognize 'as one thing'" (Kohler, 1920). Were they right? Does object recognition involve grouping? Tests of the laws of grouping have been favourable, but mostly assessed only detection, not identification, of the compound object. The grouping of elements seen in the detection experiments with lattices and "snakes in the grass" is compelling, but falls far short of the vivid everyday experience of recognizing a familiar, meaningful, na

Leveraging ventral temporal cortex's primary role in object recognition.

Decades of work demonstrate that the ventral temporal cortex (VTC) comprises category selective regions. Ritchie et al. urge a shift in perspective: new research should be grounded in behavioral relevance, not category selectivity. Here, we outline how leveraging, not shifting away from category selectivity, expands our understanding of brain function, complex cognition, and development. Further, while we agree that naturalistic paradigms will accelerate progress in this field, given category selectivity is central to VTC's information processing, we suggest future work to examine information

That person is now with or without a mask: how encoding context modulates identity recognition.

Previous research has mostly approached face recognition and target identification by focusing on face perception mechanisms, but memory mechanisms also appear to play a role. Here, we examined how the presence of a mask interferes with the memory mechanisms involved in face recognition, focusing on the dynamic interplay between encoding and recognition processes. We approach two known memory effects: (a) matching study and test conditions effects (i.e., by presenting masked and/or unmasked faces) and (b) testing expectation effects (i.e., knowing in advance that a mask could be put on or take

Featural and configural processing of faces and houses in matched dyslexic and typical readers.

While dyslexia is typically described as a phonological deficit, recent evidence suggests that ventral stream regions, important for visual categorization and object recognition, are hypoactive in dyslexic readers who might accordingly show visual recognition deficits. By manipulating featural and configural information of faces and houses, we investigated whether dyslexic readers are disadvantaged at recognizing certain object classes or using particular visual processing mechanisms. Dyslexic readers found it harder to recognize objects (houses), suggesting that visual problems in dyslexia ar

Selective defects of face familiarity associated to a left temporo-occipital lesion.

Acquired prosopagnosia is usually a consequence of bilateral or right hemisphere lesions and is often associated with topographical disorientation and dyschromatopsia. Left temporo-occipital lesions sometimes result in a face recognition disorder but in a context of visual object agnosia with spared familiarity feelings for faces, usually in left-handers. We describe a patient with a left temporo-occipital hemorrhagic lesion unexpectedly resulting in a deficit of face familiarity, which could represent a mild form of associative prosopagnosia. Our patient failed to feel familiarity feelings ev

Why Verbalization of Non-Verbal Memory Reduces Recognition Accuracy: A Computational Approach to Verbal Overshadowing.

Verbal overshadowing refers to a phenomenon whereby verbalization of non-verbal stimuli (e.g., facial features) during the maintenance phase (after the target information is no longer available from the sensory inputs) impairs subsequent non-verbal recognition accuracy. Two primary mechanisms have been proposed for verbal overshadowing, namely the recoding interference hypothesis, and the transfer-inappropriate processing shift. The former assumes that verbalization renders non-verbal representations less accurate. In contrast, the latter assumes that verbalization shifts processing operations

Simulating object recognition with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) model.

Object recognition is the ability to discriminate previously encountered objects from novel ones, typically inferred from exploratory preferences. It is usually treated as a form of recognition memory. A central idea is that both nonassociative and associative processes contribute, organized around priming: a stimulus is processed less, and therefore explored less, when its representation is already primed at the moment of encounter. Priming can arise from the stimulus's own recent activation (self-priming) or from associative cueing by context or other stimuli (associative priming). Allan Wag

Can signal detection theory explain everyday amnesia (high confident misses)?

Levi et al. (2021) critique the concept of everyday amnesia (high confident misses) by arguing that these are simply due to criterion shifts within a signal detection framework. We agree that signal detection figures can be drawn to conceptualize the results, but we argue such efforts merely provide a re-description of the phenomenon without explaining it. For that, one would need a process theory. Signal detection theory represents an elegant framework for conceiving of issues in decision making, but not for explaining mechanisms underlying them. A signal detection figure can be created for a

On compensatory strategies and computational models: the case of pure alexia.

The article is concerned with inferences from the behaviour of neurological patients to models of normal function. It takes the letter-by-letter reading strategy common in pure alexic patients as an example of the methodological problems involved in making such inferences that compensatory strategies produce. The evidence is discussed on the possible use of three ways the letter-by-letter reading process might operate: "reversed spelling"; the use of the phonological input buffer as a temporary holding store during word building; and the use of serial input to the visual word-form system entir

The neuropsychological evaluation of face identity recognition.

Facial identity recognition (FIR) is arguably the ultimate form of recognition for the adult human brain. Even if the term prosopagnosia is reserved for exceptionally rare brain-damaged cases with a category-specific abrupt loss of FIR at adulthood, subjective and objective impairments or difficulties of FIR are common in the neuropsychological population. Here we provide a critical overview of the evaluation of FIR both for clinicians and researchers in neuropsychology. FIR impairments occur following many causes that should be identified objectively by both general and specific, behavioral a

I'd know that face anywhere!

Mandler (1980) provided the classic "butcher on the bus" example illustrating the feeling of familiarity without recollection that may arise when an acquaintance is encountered in an unusual context. We studied this phenomenon by pairing photos of faces with photos of distinctive contexts at study and later testing recognition memory and remember/know judgments for faces presented with studied, switched, or new contexts. Estimates of recollection and familiarity, based on the assumption that these processes are independent, showed that switching contexts significantly lowered recollection whil

A reappraisal of person recognition and identification.

In the last years an increasing number of cases (Gainotti et al., 2008, this issue) have been reported in whom difficulty to recognise and identify familiar people occurs in everyday multimodal settings, differently from unimodal face-specific impairments (i.e., prosopagnosia). A reappraisal of current person processing models is presented in order to account for such deficits as well as for the common slips of recognition occurring in healthy subjects. The model we propose is based upon three main modifications of current models, namely: (1) the role of PINs as stores of multimodal perceptual

A continuous source reinstatement model of true and false recollection.

In studies of false recognition, subjects not only endorse items that they have never seen, but they also make subjective judgments that they remember consciously experiencing them. This is a difficult problem for most models of recognition memory, as they propose that false memories should be based on familiarity, not recollection. We present a new computational model of recollection, based on the Recognition through Semantic Synchronization (RSS) model of Johns, Jones, & Mewhort (Cognitive Psychology, 2012, 65, 486), and fuzzy trace theory (Brainerd & Reyna, Current Directions in Psychologic

Development of upper visual field bias for faces in infants.

The spatial location of the face and body seen in daily life influences human perception and recognition. This contextual effect of spatial locations suggests that daily experience affects how humans visually process the face and body. However, it remains unclear whether this effect is caused by experience, or innate neural pathways. To address this issue, we examined the development of visual field asymmetry for face processing, in which faces in the upper visual field were processed preferentially compared to the lower visual field. We found that a developmental change occurred between 6 and

Variation in self and familiar facial recognition in bipolar disorder patients at different clinical stages.

Previous studies suggest a close relationship between self-disorders and schizophrenia or unipolar depression. However, few studies have explored the characteristics of self-processing in bipolar disorder (BD) during different clinical states. This study compared the differences in self-face recognition (SFR) among patients with bipolar mania (BPM), bipolar depression (BPD), bipolar remission (RM), and healthy controls (HC). Images of subject's own face, a familiar face, and an unfamiliar face were combined in pairs at a certain proportion to obtain three types of blended images. We then compa

Masked face identification is improved by diagnostic feature training.

To slow the spread of COVID-19, many people now wear face masks in public. Face masks impair our ability to identify faces, which can cause problems for professional staff who identify offenders or members of the public. Here, we investigate whether performance on a masked face matching task can be improved by training participants to compare diagnostic facial features (the ears and facial marks)-a validated training method that improves matching performance for unmasked faces. We show this brief diagnostic feature training, which takes less than two minutes to complete, improves matching perf

The effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on perceptual learning for upright faces and its role in the composite face effect.

In the 3 experiments reported here we show that a specific neurostimulation method, whose influence can be understood in terms of a well-known theory of stimulus representation, is able to affect face recognition skills by impairing participants' performance for upright faces. We used the transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) procedure we have recently developed that allows perceptual learning, as indexed by the face inversion effect, to be modulated. We extended this tDCS procedure to another phenomenon, the composite face effect, which constitutes better recognition of the top half

Facial emotion recognition in panic disorder: a mini-review of behavioural studies.

BACKGROUND: Panic Disorder (PD) is characterized by unexpected and repeated moments of intense fear or anxiety, which manifest themselves through strong cognitive and behavioural symptoms. However, a clear picture of how impairments in recognition and processing of facial emotions affect the everyday life of PD patients has yet to be delineated. This review attempts to provide an overview of behavioural studies of emotion detection from facial stimuli in PD patients. METHODS: A bibliographic research on PubMed of all studies investigating the recognition and processing of facial emotion stimu
