In this review, the authors discuss the development of consensus-based treatment guidelines in 1997. They also synthesize the recommendations of a closed workshop held in Budapest in late 2004 that reexamined these treatment guidelines and made further and more detailed recommendations. They explore and develop the rationale for making functional restoration the pivotal treatment algorithm in the management of complex regional pain syndrome, around which all other treatments, such as psychotherapy, drugs, and interventions, revolve. The authors discuss in detail the process of functional resto

Minimally invasive endoscopic antireflux therapies are critical for bridging the gap between medical and surgical treatments for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Although multiple endoscopic devices have been developed, perhaps some of the most exciting options that are currently evolving are the full-thickness suturing techniques using widely available and low-cost platforms. Full-thickness endoscopic suturing can allow for a highly durable recreation of the anatomic and functional components of a lower esophageal sphincter, which are deficient in patients with GERD. Proper patient sel

A 74-year-old Japanese man with scrub typhus presented without the typical symptom of high fever and subsequently developed the complication of acute respiratory distress syndrome. It was suspected that exposure occurred at the river side of Kinugawa, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. His body temperature was below 38.0 degrees C. After intensive supportive care and minocycline therapy, he dramatically recovered. With the increase in popularity of outdoor recreation, scrub typhus can be found in clinics all over Japan. Physicians should therefore be aware of the manifestations of the disease and the

The author presents a survey of the effects exercised by the public parks on the environment. The beneficial effect on climate, air pollution and the reduction of noise is stated mainly based on the results of investigations carried out in Hungary. The usefulness of public parks is reviewed from the standpoint of hygiene (environmental protection, recreation, therapy). The importance of the public parks and other green areas for recreational purposes is particularly stressed using Hungarian data as a basis. Some details are made known concerning the urban parks, their development between 1961

The PLISSIT model is a comprehensive program that combines educational strategies with behavioral intervention to integrate human sexuality into the initial rehabilitation of spinal cord-injured persons. Sexuality is treated as a health care issue as important as bowel and bladder care, skin care, psychosocial issues, mobility, self-care and vocational concerns. Patients admitted to the Spinal Cord Injury Program are surrounded by a supportive milieu and an interdisciplinary staff who comfortably incorporate sexuality into discussions about catheter care, positioning, communication styles, ass

This pilot study investigated the effects of massage therapy on stress indicators in recreational horses, focusing on salivary cortisol levels, heart rate and conflict behaviors. Five recreational horses were analyzed under two experimental conditions: without and with massage treatments before riding sessions. Saliva samples were collected at four specific intervals in each condition to measure cortisol concentrations using an ELISA test. Observations of behavioral indicators and heart-rate monitoring complemented the physiological data. The results revealed that massage significantly reduced

OBJECTIVE: To describe two cases of abrupt resolution of chronic, recurrent, inversion sprain to ankles in young recreational athletes.
CLINICAL FEATURES: A 13-year-old, female, avid recreational soccer player with ankles that would spontaneously invert during various inconsistent points in the weight bearing gait cycle, sometimes with acute pain or sprain to the ankle. No intervention was attempted prior to her entry to the chiropractic office. A 17-year-old male avid skate- boarder and snowboarder whose left ankle routinely "gave out" into inversion upon mundane weight bearing activity, usu

OBJECTIVES: Occupationally embedded exercise is a central idea in the profession of occupational therapy. This experiment compared the effect of an occupationally embedded exercise involving a simple dice game with a rote exercise in persons with stroke with pronator spasticity. Both exercise conditions involved bilaterally assisted supination, consistent with the neurodevelopmental model of practice.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 14 men and 12 women post-cerebrovascular accident with a mean age of 68.4 years (SD = 11.2) at six clinical sites in California, Texas, and Michigan. Subjects ha

BACKGROUND: Dementia and depression are among the leading causes of global disease burden. Effective and scalable interventions are needed to address the effect of these conditions, and music interventions are a promising non-pharmacological approach. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of music interventions on depressive symptoms among care home residents with dementia in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Türkiye, and the UK.
METHODS: Music Interventions for Dementia and Depression in Elderly care was a large, multinational, cluster-randomised controlled tria

Connectedness to nature and nature contact can provide many benefits to humans, like stress reduction, recovery from illness, and increased positive emotions. Likewise, recreational horseback riding is a widespread sports activity with the potential to enhance physical and psychological health. Yet, the influence of connectedness to nature on the wellbeing of older aged recreational horseback riders has not been investigated so far. The aim of the present study therefore was to explore the relationship between nature relatedness and physical, psychological and social wellbeing and happiness. T

Common asthma triggers during recreational activities include allergen exposure, concomitant viral infection, and exercise. We present the case of a 42-year-old man with a 2-year history of wheezing, chest tightness, and upper respiratory symptoms that were associated with surfing. He denied symptoms with other forms of exercise and had no personal history of asthma. His physical exam was unremarkable and his pre- and postbronchodilator spirometry was normal. After detailed history and keen observation on the patient's part, a diagnosis was made and he enjoyed good response to the therapy for

PURPOSE: There is a need to investigate the type, duration, frequency, and intensity of physical activity that are critical to reduce the risk of breast cancer, and if this relation differs among subgroups of women.
METHODS: We analyzed the relation between physical activity and breast cancer incidence between 1990 and 2002 (n=3,424 cases), among 90,509 women of the French E3N cohort, ages between 40 and 65 years in 1990. We gave special attention to effect modification by body mass index (BMI), family history of breast cancer, parity, and hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
RESULTS: A linear

BACKGROUND: Evidence has accumulated showing that recreational physical activity reduces breast cancer risk. However, it is unclear whether risk reduction pertains to specific receptor-defined subtypes. Moreover, few studies have examined whether changes in the amount of recreational physical activity during adulthood influence breast cancer risk.
METHODS: A total of 108,907 women, ages 22 to 79 years with no history of breast cancer when joining the California Teachers Study in 1995-1996, completed a baseline questionnaire and were eligible for the study. Through 2012, 5882 women were diagno
