Seizures as a complication of recreational drug use: Analysis of the Euro-DEN Plus data-set.

Seizures are a recognized and potentially serious complication of recreational drug use. This study examined a large international data set of presentations to Emergency Departments with acute recreational drug toxicity, the European Drug Emergencies Plus (Euro-DEN Plus) Network, to compare presentations with and without seizures and estimate incidence and associated drugs. Amongst 23,947 presentations between January 2014 and December 2017, there were 1013 (4.2%) with reported seizures. Clinical and demographic features were similar between individuals who had a seizure and those who did not,

In-hospital prognosis of acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction in patients with recent recreational drug use.

AIMS: Although recreational drug use may induce ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI), its prevalence in patients hospitalized in intensive cardiac care units (ICCUs), as well as its short-term cardiovascular consequences, remains unknown. We aimed to assess the in-hospital prognosis of STEMI in patients with recreational drug use from the ADDICT-ICCU study. METHODS AND RESULTS: From 7-22 April 2021, recreational drug use was detected prospectively by a systematic urine multidrug test in all consecutive patients admitted for STEMI in 39 ICCUs across France. The primary endpoint was major

Motivational characteristics of recreational drug use among emerging adults in social settings: an integrative literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Recreational drug use by emerging adults has been identified as an increasingly normalized trend in social contexts. It has been documented that the consumption of these substances regularly occurs at music festivals, raves, nightlife and party settings. While it is known that emerging adults participate in these risk-taking behaviors, what is not known is their motivational characteristics for use. The aim of this review to identify and review literature describing the motivations for recreational drug use and drug choice (excluding alcohol, cannabis and tobacco) by emerging adu

High prevalence of recreational and illicit drug use in German people living with HIV with a potential for drug-drug interactions with antiretroviral therapy.

Recreational drug use is higher in people living with HIV (PLHIV) than in the general population in Europe. This use increases the risk for drug-drug interactions (DDIs) and adverse events. We assessed the prevalence and clinical consequences of substance abuse among PLHIV. BESIDE was a cross-sectional, multi-center study in 2016/18, evaluating comorbidities, polypharmacy and recreational/illicit drug use in PLHIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Germany. Legal and illicit drug use was recorded using two anonymous patient questionnaires one year apart (Q1 and Q2). The BESIDE study population

Maternal Smoking, Alcohol and Recreational Drug Use and the Risk of SIDS Among a US Urban Black Population.

BACKGROUND: Rates of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) are twice as high among Black infants compared to white infants in the US. While the contribution of sleep environment factors to this disparity is known, little is known about the risk of SIDS among Black infants in relation to maternal prenatal smoking, alcohol and drug use as well as infant smoke exposure. OBJECTIVE: To assess the contribution of maternal substance use during pregnancy and the potential interactions with infant bedsharing in a high-risk, urban Black population. METHODS: The Chicago Infant Mortality Study (CIMS) coll

Adverse Neuropsychiatric Events and Recreational Use of Efavirenz and Other HIV-1 Antiretroviral Drugs.

Efavirenz is a highly effective HIV-1 antiretroviral; however, it is also frequently associated with neuropsychiatric adverse events (NPAE) that include abnormal dreams, sleep disturbances, nervousness, anxiety, depression, and dizziness. The incidence of NPAEs upon initiation of treatment with efavirenz-containing medications is high, exceeding 50% in most studies. Although the NPAEs tend to decrease after the first month in many patients, they persist for long periods of time in others. Efavirenz-based treatment is generally well-tolerated in children, although some experience persistent con

Population-based case-control study of recreational drug use and testis cancer risk confirms an association between marijuana use and nonseminoma risk.

BACKGROUND: Testicular germ cell tumor (TGCT) incidence increased steadily in recent decades, but causes remain elusive. Germ cell function may be influenced by cannabinoids, and 2 prior epidemiologic studies reported that the use of marijuana may be associated with nonseminomatous TGCT. Here, the authors evaluate the relation between TGCTs and exposure to marijuana and other recreational drugs using a population-based case-control study. METHODS: In total, 163 patients who were diagnosed with TGCT in Los Angeles County from December 1986 to April 1991 were enrolled, and 292 controls were mat

A case-control study of maternal periconceptual and pregnancy recreational drug use and fetal malformation using hair analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal recreational drug use may be associated with the development of fetal malformations such as gastroschisis, brain and limb defects, the aetiology due to vascular disruption during organogenesis. Using forensic hair analysis we reported evidence of recreational drug use in 18% of women with a fetal gastroschisis. Here we investigate this association in a variety of fetal malformations using the same method. METHODS: In a multi-centre study, women with normal pregnancies (controls) and those with fetal abnormalities (cases) gave informed consent for hair analysis for recreati

Broad-spectrum LC-MS/MS hair analysis for monitoring recreational drug use in electronic dance music festival attendees.

PURPOSE: Hair toxicological analysis enables the verification of long-term drug use monitoring and supports epidemiological studies. In recreational contexts, multi-analyte methods are crucial for accurately characterizing consumption patterns. The present work aimed to develop and validate an LC-MS/MS method for the analysis of 47 drugs of abuse and related compounds in hair samples. METHODS: A 20 mg hair aliquot was incubated with methanol at 40 °C for 16 h. The supernatant was dried and injected into the LC-MS/MS system. The monitored substances were amphetamines, cocaine and related compo

The future of drugs: recreational drug use and sexual health among gay and other men who have sex with men.

There are complex historical connections between sexual minoritisation and desires to chemically alter bodily experience. For gay men, drug and alcohol use can be a creative or experimental response to social marginalisation - and not necessarily a problematic one in every instance. Numerous studies have found that infection with HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) is more likely among gay and men who have sex with men (MSM) who use recreational drugs than those who do not, but the causal nature of these relations is uncertain. Sexualised drug use is associated with a range

Socio-Ecological Factors Impacting Smoking and Recreational Drug Use During Pregnancy: Insights from the Albany Infant and Mother Study.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking and recreational drug use during pregnancy are significant public health challenges with multifactorial etiology. Most research focuses on the independent contributions of single risk factors. Grounded in the socio-ecological model and the problem behavior theory, this study aimed to identify the broad range of life course individual, interpersonal, and social-contextual factors influencing smoking and recreational drug use during pregnancy among a socioeconomically disadvantaged and racial/ethnic diverse study population. METHODS: Participants were 291 pregnant women fr

Understanding the effect of recreational drug use on bone health and musculoskeletal disease in the establishment of pain regimens.

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of recreational drugs has raised concerns regarding their effects on various organ systems. The use of cannabis and opioids in chronic pain management increases their prevalence among patients with musculoskeletal conditions whose bone health may already be compromised. This article aims to review the pathophysiology and toxic effects of recreational drug use on musculoskeletal health to establish appropriate pain regimens for patients with substance use. METHODS: Medical literature published from 1970 until 2022 was identified utilizing MEDLINE/PubMed and the C

Recreational marijuana laws and the misuse of prescription opioids: Evidence from National Survey on Drug Use and Health microdata.

Several studies have concluded that legalizing medical marijuana can reduce deaths from opioid overdoses. Drawing on micro data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a survey uniquely suited to assessing patterns of substance use, we examine the relationship between recreational marijuana laws (RMLs) and the misuse of prescription opioids. Using a standard difference-in-differences (DD) regression model, we find that RML adoption reduces the likelihood of frequently misusing prescription opioids such as OxyContin, Percocet, and Vicodin. However, using a two-stage procedure designed

Recreational drug use and sexual behavior change in a cohort of homosexual men. The Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS).

The relationship between use of recreational drugs and high-risk (HIV-transmitting) homosexual behavior was examined in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) population. Among the 3916 men who completed both the baseline (1984) and first 6-month follow-up evaluations and were sexually active during the 6 months prior to enrollment, self-reported use of each of 10 classes of recreational drugs in conjunction with sexual activity was analyzed for both cross-sectional and prospective relationships with pattern of sexual behavior using a four-level sexual risk behavior index. At baseline, the p
