Recurrent issues with deep neural network models of visual recognition.

Object recognition requires flexible and robust information processing, especially in view of the challenges posed by naturalistic visual settings. The ventral stream in visual cortex is provided with this robustness by its recurrent connectivity. Recurrent deep neural networks (DNNs) have recently emerged as promising models of the ventral stream, surpassing feedforward DNNs in the ability to account for brain representations. In this study, we asked whether recurrent DNNs could also better account for human behaviour during visual recognition. We assembled a stimulus set that includes manipu

A combined convolutional and recurrent neural network for enhanced glaucoma detection.

Glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness, is a multifaceted disease with several patho-physiological features manifesting in single fundus images (e.g., optic nerve cupping) as well as fundus videos (e.g., vascular pulsatility index). Current convolutional neural networks (CNNs) developed to detect glaucoma are all based on spatial features embedded in an image. We developed a combined CNN and recurrent neural network (RNN) that not only extracts the spatial features in a fundus image but also the temporal features embedded in a fundus video (i.e., sequential images). A total of 1810 fundus imag

Validity of recurrent neural networks to predict pedal forces and lower limb kinetics in cycling.

Dynamic variables contribute to understand the mechanics of pedalling and can assist with injury prevention. Measuring pedal forces and joint moments and powers has a high cost, which can be mitigated by using trained artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict forces from kinematics. Thus, this study aimed at training and validating recurrent ANN to predict 3D pedal forces, lower limb joint moments and powers from lower limb kinematics. Ergometer pedalling data from seventeen cyclists recorded in a single laboratory session were used to train the ANN, where various ergometer power outputs and

Convolutional and recurrent neural networks for the detection of valvular heart diseases in phonocardiogram recordings.

Valvular heart diseases (VHD) are one of the major causes of cardiovascular diseases that are having high mortality rates worldwide. The early diagnosis of VHD prevents the development of cardiac diseases and allows for optimum medication. Despite of the ability of current gold standards in identifying VHD, they still lack the required accuracy and thus, several cases go misdiagnosed. In this vein, a study is conducted herein to investigate the efficiency of deep learning models in identifying VHD through phonocardiography (PCG) recordings. PCG heart sounds were obtained from an open-access da

G-PARC: Graph-Physics Aware Recurrent Convolutional neural networks for spatiotemporal dynamics on unstructured meshes.

Physics-aware recurrent convolutional networks (PARC) have demonstrated strong performance in predicting nonlinear spatiotemporal dynamics by embedding differential operators directly into the computational graph of a neural network. However, pixel-based convolutions are restricted to static, uniform Cartesian grids, making them ill-suited to following evolving localized structures in an efficient manner. Graph neural networks (GNNs) naturally handle irregular spatial discretizations, but existing graph-based physics-aware deep learning (PADL) methods have difficulty handling extreme nonlinear

Temporal prediction of suicidal ideation in an ecological momentary assessment study with recurrent neural networks.

INTRODUCTION: Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) holds promise for providing insights into daily life experiences when studying mental health phenomena. However, commonly used mixed-effects linear statistical models do not fully utilize the richness of the ultidimensional time-varying data that EMA yields. Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) provide an alternative data analytic method to leverage more information and potentially improve prediction, particularly for non-normally distributed outcomes. METHODS: As part of a broader research study of suicidal thoughts and behavior in people with

Emergence of behavioral phenomena and adaptation effects in human numerosity decoder using recurrent neural networks.

Humans possess an innate ability to visually perceive numerosities, which refers to the cardinality of a set. Numerous studies indicate that the lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP) and other intraparietal sulcus (IPS) regions (region) of the brain contain the neurological substrates responsible for number processing. Existing computational models of number perception often focus on a limited range of numbers and fail to account for important behavioral characteristics like adaptation effects, despite simulating fundamental aspects such as size and distance effects. To address these limitations,

Tempel: time-series mutation prediction of influenza A viruses via attention-based recurrent neural networks.

MOTIVATION: Influenza viruses are persistently threatening public health, causing annual epidemics and sporadic pandemics. The evolution of influenza viruses remains to be the main obstacle in the effectiveness of antiviral treatments due to rapid mutations. The goal of this work is to predict whether mutations are likely to occur in the next flu season using historical glycoprotein hemagglutinin sequence data. One of the major challenges is to model the temporality and dimensionality of sequential influenza strains and to interpret the prediction results. RESULTS: In this article, we propose

Deep Recurrent Neural Networks for Automatic Detection of Sleep Apnea from Single Channel Respiration Signals.

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that causes repeated breathing interruption during sleep. The performance of automated apnea detection methods based on respiratory signals depend on the signals considered and feature extraction methods. Moreover, feature engineering techniques are highly dependent on the experts' experience and their prior knowledge about different physiological signals and conditions of the subjects. To overcome these problems, a novel deep recurrent neural network (RNN) framework is developed for automated feature extraction and detection of apnea events from single r

Modelling memory functions with recurrent neural networks consisting of input compensation units: II. Dynamic situations.

Modelling the cognitive abilities of humans or animals or building agents that are supposed to behave cognitively requires modelling a memory system that is able to store and retrieve various contents. The content to be stored is assumed to comprise information about more or less invariant environmental objects as well as information about movements. A combination of information about both objects and movements may be called a situation model. Here we focus, in part, on models storing dynamic patterns. In particular, two abilities of humans in representing dynamical systems receive special foc

Parralel Recurrent Convolutional Neural Network for Abnormal Heart Sound Classification.

This paper presents the results of a study performed on Parallel Convolutional Neural Network (PCNN) toward detecting heart abnormalities from the heart sound signals. The PCNN preserves dynamic contents of the signal in a parallel combination of the recurrent neural network and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The performance of the PCNN is evaluated and compared to the one obtained from a Serial form of the Convolutional Neural Network (SCNN) as well as two other baseline studies: a Long- and Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network and a Conventional CNN (CCNN). We employed a well-known

A demonstration that breast cancer recurrence can be predicted by neural network analysis.

Neural Network Analysis, a form of artificial intelligence, was successfully used to predict the clinical outcome of node-positive breast cancer patients. A Neural Network was trained to predict clinical outcome using prognostic information from 1008 patients. During training, the network received as input information tumor hormone receptor status, DNA index and S-phase determination by flow cytometry, tumor size, number of axillary lymph nodes involved with tumor, and age of the patient, as well as length of clinical followup, relapse status, and time of relapse. The ability of the trained Ne

Embedding of low-dimensional sensory dynamics in recurrent networks: Implications for the geometry of neural representation.

Neural population activity in sensory cortex is organized on low-dimensional manifolds, but it is unclear why such manifolds should arise and what determines their geometry. We address this sensory representation problem by modeling cortical populations as recurrent circuits driven by low-dimensional, regular sensory dynamics (e.g. motion on a circle, head direction, multi-frequency tones on tori). By combining tools from generalized synchronization and delay-embedding theory, specialized to this quasiperiodic regime, we show that contracting recurrent networks generically develop smooth inter

A novel hybrid customized color correction and Recurrent Convolutional Neural Networks approach for underwater image enhancement.

Underwater imaging suffers from various challenges such as color distortion, low contrast, and reduced visibility caused by light attenuation. Addressing these issues is crucial for improving the performance of computer vision tasks in underwater environments. Different approaches are proposed in the literature to enhance the underwater images, however the dynamically varying environmental conditions remains challenging. It requires adaptive approach to adjust the color dynamically and to estimate the features. In this study, we propose a novel hybrid approach for underwater image enhancement

Unsupervised Anomaly Detection for Cars CAN Sensors Time Series Using Small Recurrent and Convolutional Neural Networks.

Predictive maintenance in the car industry is an active field of research for machine learning and anomaly detection. The capability of cars to produce time series data from sensors is growing as the car industry is heading towards more connected and electric vehicles. Unsupervised anomaly detectors are therefore very adapted to process those complex multidimensional time series and highlight abnormal behaviors. We propose to use recurrent and convolutional neural networks based on unsupervised anomaly detectors with simple architectures on real, multidimensional time series generated by the c

Detection of Nocturnal Scratching Movements in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis Using Accelerometers and Recurrent Neural Networks.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting both children and adults and is associated with pruritus. A method for objectively quantifying nocturnal scratching events could aid in the development of therapies for atopic dermatitis and other pruritic disorders. High-resolution wrist actigraphy (three-dimensional accelerometer sensors sampled at 20 Hz) is a noninvasive method to record movement. This paper presents an algorithm to detect nocturnal scratching events based on actigraphy data. The twofold process consists of segmenting the data into "no motion," "single han

Noninvasive Arterial CO2 Estimation for Neonatal Ventilation Using Gated Recurrent Neural Networks in the Preterm Ovine Model.

We present two Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) neural networks for estimating the arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) in mechanically ventilated neonates, using time series data of the end-tidal partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PetCO2) and noninvasive respiratory and vital measurements. To train and validate these models, we use secondary data of preterm lambs. 1,182 arterial blood gas analyses (ABGs) from 58 animals are included. We compare our approaches to two clinical methods: (i) using PetCO2 as a surrogate for PaCO2 and (ii) adjusting PetCO2 with a constant offset based on

Classification of Carotid Plaque with Jellyfish Sign Through Convolutional and Recurrent Neural Networks Utilizing Plaque Surface Edges.

In carotid arteries, plaque can develop as localized elevated lesions. The Jellyfish sign, marked by fluctuating plaque surfaces with blood flow pulsation, is a dynamic characteristic of these plaques that has recently attracted attention. Detecting this sign is vital, as it is often associated with cerebral infarction. This paper proposes an ultrasound video-based classification method for the Jellyfish sign, using deep neural networks. The proposed method first preprocesses carotid ultrasound videos to separate the movement of the vascular wall from plaque movements. These preprocessed video

Automatic recognition of murmurs of ventricular septal defect using convolutional recurrent neural networks with temporal attentive pooling.

Recognizing specific heart sound patterns is important for the diagnosis of structural heart diseases. However, the correct recognition of heart murmur depends largely on clinical experience. Accurately identifying abnormal heart sound patterns is challenging for young and inexperienced clinicians. This study is aimed at the development of a novel algorithm that can automatically recognize systolic murmurs in patients with ventricular septal defects (VSDs). Heart sounds from 51 subjects with VSDs and 25 subjects without a significant heart malformation were obtained in this study. Subsequently
