The complete mitochondrial genome of Acanthaspis geniculata (Hsiao, 1976) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and its phylogenetic analyses.

The genus Acanthaspis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) comprises predatory insects of ecological importance, yet mitochondrial genomic resources for this group remain limited. Here, we present the complete mitochondrial genome of Acanthaspis geniculata (Hsiao, 1976). The mitogenome is 16,226 bp in length and contains the standard set of 37 mitochondrial genes (13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes), along with a control region (D-loop). The nucleotide composition is A (40.4%), T (29.6%), C (17.9%), and G (12.1%), with an overall AT content of 70.0%. Phylogenetic analyses based on par

Variability in Trypanosoma cruzi susceptibility among species of kissing bugs (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) in Mexico.

Chagas disease, caused by the kinetoplastid Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas, 1909), and transmitted by triatomine bugs, poses a significant public health challenge. Variability in the susceptibility of different triatomine species to T. cruzi infection can profoundly influence disease transmission dynamics and control measures. In this study, we assessed the susceptibility to T. cruzi infection in the first and third nymphal stages across eight triatomine species to T. cruzi infection using experimental inoculation with the NINOA strain and optical microscopy. The evaluated species were Dipetalogast

Geographic distribution and morphometric differentiation of Triatoma nitida usinger 1939 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) in Guatemala.

Triatoma nitida was found in 14 (0.4%) out of 3,726 houses located in six departments across Guatemala, which were surveyed from 1994 to 1998 by the man-hour collection method. Compared to previous information, the distribution of T. nitida in Guatemala has increased from five to nine departments; the species is present in mild climates at altitudes from 960 to 1,500 m. Fourteen percent of the intradomestic T. nitida were infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. The species was often found in conjunction with other triatomines (T. dimidiata and Rhodnius prolixus). The domestic and peridomestic presenc

Structure and function of the stylets of hematophagous Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), with special reference to Dipetalogaster maxima.

Kissing bugs (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) are able to bend their rod-like maxillae while searching for blood vessels in the tissue of their vertebrate hosts. Little is known about the working mechanisms of these bending movements and the distal opening of the food channel. We compared the morphological structure of the stylets (mandibles and maxillae) of four triatomine species and analyzed the feeding process of Dipetalogaster maxima (Uhler, 1894). The maxillae of triatomine bugs are interlocked by a tongue-and-groove system, allowing longitudinal sliding. While penetrating the host t

Bite Caused by the Assassin Bug Zelus Fabricius, 1803 (Hemiptera; Heteroptera: Reduviidae) in a Human.

A 47-y-old man was bitten by a reduviid bug from the Zelus Fabricius, 1803 genus, which was hidden inside a rubber-coated boot. The bite caused immediate and sharp pain, followed by local edema and constant pruritus for 15 d. Pain and fever within the first 24 h were managed with analgesics as needed, and resolution was complete and without sequelae after 21 d.

Melt With This Kiss: Paralyzing and Liquefying Venom of The Assassin Bug Pristhesancus plagipennis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Assassin bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae) are venomous insects, most of which prey on invertebrates. Assassin bug venom has features in common with venoms from other animals, such as paralyzing and lethal activity when injected, and a molecular composition that includes disulfide-rich peptide neurotoxins. Uniquely, this venom also has strong liquefying activity that has been hypothesized to facilitate feeding through the narrow channel of the proboscis-a structure inherited from sap- and phloem-feeding phytophagous hemipterans and adapted during the evolution of Heteroptera into a fan

Importance of species of Triatominae (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) in risk of transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi in western Mexico.

The epidemiological risk of infection by Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas in human populations of western Mexico is still under study. Although most vectors in this region and their vector capability are already known, new studies estimating the risk and the importance of individual Triatominae species (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) for T. cruzi transmission are necessary. For 1 yr, every month, > 400 human dwellings and their surroundings in eight communities of two western Mexico states were searched for triatomines. More than 1,000 specimens representing four species were collected and checked for T. cruz

Ultrastructure of the wing-coupling apparatus in seven Triatominae species (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) from North America.

Triatomines are the primary vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas), the causative organism of Chagas disease, one of the most important vector-borne diseases in Mexico. Triatomine dispersal encompasses a broad spectrum of flight capacities, ranging from short-distance, low-altitude flights to active, sustained dispersal in certain species. Although recent studies have examined the phenotypic and genetic variability of flight-related traits, the specific morphological constraints hindering their aerodynamic efficiency remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a comparative

Sex-specific effects of Trypanosoma cruzi infection on mating behavior in Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Chagas disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by triatomine bugs, is a major public health concern in Latin America. Triatoma infestans, the main domestic vector in the Southern Cone, exhibits physiological responses to infection, but its reproductive behavior under chronic infection has not been characterized in detail. In this study, we evaluated the effect of T. cruzi infection on the copulatory behavior of T. infestans. Virgin males and females were paired according to infection status: both uninfected (UU), both infected (II), or mixed combinations (UI and IU). Behavioral int

Population structure and genetic diversity of Triatoma longipennis (Usinger, 1939) (Heteroptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) in Mexico.

Triatoma longipennis (Usinger) is an important vector of Trypanosoma cruzi in western, central and northern Mexico, due to its wide distribution, high infection rates, and epidemiological indices. However, its population genetics has not been completely characterized. In this study, the intra-specific relationships between different T. longipennis populations were analyzed from seven states in Mexico using mitochondrial cyt B as a marker. Our results show that the population of Jalisco was the most diverse, with the highest genetic and haplotypic variation (Hd = 0.978, π = 0.099 and θ = 0.079)

Differential transcriptome analysis supports Rhodnius montenegrensis and Rhodnius robustus (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae) as distinct species.

Chagas disease is one of the main parasitic diseases found in Latin America and it is estimated that between six and seven million people are infected worldwide. Its etiologic agent, the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, is transmitted by triatomines, some of which from the genus Rhodnius. Twenty species are currently recognized in this genus, including some closely related species with low levels of morphological differentiation, such as Rhodnius montenegrensis and Rhodnius robustus. In order to investigate genetic differences between these two species, we generated large-scale RNA-sequencing data

Household model of Chagas disease vectors (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) considering domestic, peridomestic, and sylvatic vector populations.

ABSTRACT Disease transmission is difficult to model because most vectors and hosts have different generation times. Chagas disease is such a situation, where insect vectors have 1-2 generations annually and mammalian hosts, including humans, can live for decades. The hemataphagous triatominae vectors (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) of the causative parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) usually feed on sleeping hosts, making vector infestation of houses, peridomestic areas, and wild animal burrows a central factor in transmission. Because of difficulties with different generatio

Period of time and movement distances between feeding and postfeeding defecation in Triatoma pallidipennis (Heteroptera: Reduviidae).

Defecation time is one of the key parameters used to estimate the efficiency of a Triatomine species as a vector of Trypanosoma cruzi. There is controversy among experts as to whether triatomines that defecate 1-10 min after feeding are efficient vectors, with a different perspective on the distance moved from the host to defecate in the case of triatomines after feeding. The aim of the present study was to determine the period of time and movement distances between feeding and defecation of third-, fourth- and fifth- nymphal instars and adults of Triatoma pallidipennis specimens that defecate

Influence of blood meal source on the biological parameters of Triatoma pallidipennis (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) from Mexico.

Chagas disease is one of the most important vector-borne diseases in Latin America, including Mexico. Triatoma pallidipennis (Stål) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) is a Mexican triatomine vector commonly associated with different hosts. The influence of six blood meals (rabbits, rats, mice, dogs, cats and chickens) on six biological parameters of the biology of T. pallidipennis was evaluated. A significant difference was found in the period of egg-to-adult development between the five mammalian feeds (mean 195 days) and the chicken feed (221 days). The probability of survival was significantly lower i

Mitochondrial Genome Assemblies of Four "Bee-Assassin" (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Apiomerus) Recovered Using Shallow Whole-Genome sequencing.

Apiomerus ("bee-assassin" assassin bugs) is a Neotropical genus of Reduviidae with ecological importance as a group of predatory insects and notable morphological diversity, yet mitochondrial genomic resources have remained unavailable for the genus. We generated low-coverage whole-genome sequencing data from four vouchered specimens collected in Colombia and reconstructed mitochondrial genomes for Apiomerus sp., A. ochropterus, A. luctuosus, and A. nitidicollis. Quality-filtered reads were assembled using an organelle-specific GetOrganelle workflow, and the resulting assembly graphs and candi

Environmental and Dispersal-Related Drivers of Color Morph Distribution in Triatoma infestans (Klug, 1834) (Hemiptera, Reduviidae).

Understanding the dispersal capacity of Triatoma infestans, the main vector of Chagas disease in South America, is vital for vector control and managing recolonization after insecticide use. This study compares the seasonal frequency of melanic and non-melanic T. infestans morphs in Northwestern Córdoba Province, Argentina, and examines their association with environmental variables, morphometric traits, nutritional status, and flight capacity. Insects were collected at the beginning and end of the warm season. Dorsal coloration, morphometric traits, nutritional status, flight-related indices,

Triatoma rubrovaria (Blanchard, 1843) (Hemiptera-Reduviidae-Triatominae) III: patterns of feeding, defecation and resistance to starvation.

Data from the Chagas Disease Control Program indicate a growing domiciliary and peridomiciliary invasion of Triatoma rubrovaria in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, where it has become the most frequent triatomine species captured there since the control of T. infestans. Bionomic characteristics that could influence the vectorial capacity of T. rubrovaria as vector of Trypanosoma cruzi were evaluated: patterns of (i) feeding, (ii) defecation, and (iii) resistance to starvation, using insects fed on mice. Fifty three percent of the females showed a defecation pattern conducive to chagasic transmi

Life history data of a Triatoma protracta nahuatlae, T. sinaloensis, and their laboratory hybrids (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Chagas disease is one of the most significant vector-borne diseases in Mexico. The presence of "sylvatic" triatomine vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas) inside human dwellings necessitates estimating their vectorial capacity. To estimate this capacity in Triatoma protracta nahuatlae (Ryckman), Triatoma sinaloensis (Ryckman), and their laboratory hybrids, 6 biological parameters were examined. Triatoma sinaloensis exhibited the shortest development time (155 days), with a median of 12 blood meals. Mortality rates varied from 35% to 45% in the 3 studied cohorts. All 3 cohorts were aggressive,
