Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is a well-described state of the series of metabolic and biochemical changes that can occur during the feeding of malnourished persons. The shifts in fluids and electrolytes can lead to complications during artificial feeding, which if not recognised and untreated can lead to death. Although the physiology and pathophysiology of RFS is well known, the circumstances under which the RFS appears, clinical manifestations and management of these patients are less clear. There are few published studies describing the occurrence of RFS in children. We describe two cases of RF

Refeeding syndrome refers to a clinical condition whereby biochemical abnormalities such as hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, and mainly hypophosphatemia occur upon recommencement of feeding, typically in malnourished catabolic patients. A 36-year-old female presented at 30 weeks gestation with hyperemesis gravidarum. During this admission, the patient developed transaminitis with low platelets prompting suspicion of hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes low platelets (HELLP) syndrome, but the concurrent findings of severe hypophosphatemia and rhabdomyolysis were not in favor of HELLP syndrome but that

Refeeding syndrome (RS) has not been well defined in the neonatal population, although hypophosphatemia is identified as the most common manifestation. The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition recently provided recommendations for the prevention and management of RS in children and adults; however, specific neonatal recommendations were not provided. In an effort to provide an overview of the incidence of RS or hypophosphatemia in the neonatal population and the impact of patient-specific and nutrition factors, a review of the literature was conducted. The literature search in

Introduction: According to estimates based on the GLOBOCAN database of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, in 2018 alone, 18 100 000 cancers were globally diagnosed. Importantly, the majority of cancer patients experience unintended weight loss that leads to many adverse clinical consequences, including malnutrition and cancer cachexia. At the same time, each nutritional intervention must be carried out individually, as it can lead to critical complications, resulting in a threat to the health and life of the cachectic patient. An example of this type of risk is refeeding syndrome

BACKGROUND: Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is an important and well-known complication in malnourished patients, but the incidence of RFS after obesity surgery is unknown and the awareness of RFS in obese patients as a postsurgical complication must be raised. We present a case of RFS subsequent to biliopancreatic diversion in a morbidly obese patient.
CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old female patient with a BMI of 41.5 kg/m2 was transferred to our hospital due to Wernicke's Encephalopathy in a global malabsorptive syndrome after biliopancreatic diversion. Parenteral nutrition, vitamin supplementation and

Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is an underappreciated, yet common and potentially dangerous, constellation of metabolic derangements that can occur upon reinstitution of any type of nutritional intervention. The typical patient who experiences RFS has been malnourished for days to weeks and develops hypophosphatemia and, occasionally, hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia when administered a carbohydrate load in the form of glucose-containing fluids, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), tube feedings, or an oral diet. The pathophysiology of RFS is complex but mainly results from an acute intracellular shift i

Refeeding syndrome can occur in malnourished patients with acute pancreatitis who have electrolyte imbalances. Refeeding syndrome is characterized by severe electrolyte imbalances (mainly hypophosphatemia, hypomagnesemia, and hypokalemia), vitamin deficiency (mainly thiamine deficiency), fluid overload, and salt retention resulting in organ dysfunction and cardiac arrhythmias. We herein report a case involving a patient with severe pancreatitis and gallbladder stones who developed refeeding syndrome with shock and loss of consciousness. The patient was treated by opportune vitamin and electrol

Refeeding syndrome very rarely develops during pregnancy. A 35-year-old primiparous woman pregnant with twins complained of severe fatigue at 19 weeks' gestation. She was admitted to our hospital in a malnourished condition because of repeated self-induced vomiting due to anorexia nervosa. Just after hospitalization, she voluntarily increased her caloric intake significantly above the recommended prescribed diet, without medical permission. Nine days later, she developed refeeding syndrome. Electrolyte replacement and calorie restriction were started and her condition gradually improved. The h

A 5-mo-old severely malnourished 3.5 kg boy was brought to the emergency department with hypoglycemia, bradycardia, bradypnea, and hypothermia. His findings were likely due to severe malnutrition secondary to parental neglect. Resuscitation with dextrose containing intravenous fluids was promptly started. On day 2 of admission, refeeding was initiated. From that time, he had multiple hypoglycemic episodes along with hypophosphatemia, hypomagnesemia, and hypokalemia. Hypoglycemia was associated with the initiation of enteral feeding and an increase in calories and amounts of enteral feeding. Hy

BACKGROUND: Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is an uncommon, but potentially serious, complication of nutrition therapy. There remains a lack of consensus as to the clinical definition of RFS and refeeding hypophosphataemia (RH), and what measures should be included to assess risk. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of RH and RFS using previously proposed criteria in our cohort of patients receiving parenteral nutrition (PN), and assess the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines as risk factors.
METHODS: A single-centre prospective cohort study of adult patients (age ≥18

INTRODUCTION: Starvation ketoacidosis (SKA) is a rare cause of ketoacidosis in the general population but can be seen with malignancy. Patients often respond well to treatment, but some rarely develop refeeding syndrome (RFS) as their electrolytes drop to dangerous levels causing organ failure. Typically, RFS can be managed with low-calorie feeds, but sometimes patients require a halt in feeds until their electrolyte imbalances are managed.
CASE REPORT: We discuss a woman with synovial sarcoma on chemotherapy who was diagnosed with SKA and then developed severe RFS after treatment with intrav

The refeeding syndrome is a life-threatening complication that can occur after initiation of a nutrition therapy in malnourished patients. If the risk factors and pathophysiology are known, the refeeding syndrome can effectively be prevented and treated, if recognized early. A slow increase of food intake and the close monitoring of serum electrolyte levels play an important role. Because the refeeding syndrome is not well known and the symptoms may vary extremely, this complication is poorly recognized, especially against the background of geriatric multimorbidity. This overview is intended t

Refeeding syndrome (RFS) has been well described but is also a frequently forgotten and undiagnosed complication in clinical practice, which, if untreated, may lead to death. Patients who are more prone to developing RFS are those with at least one of the following conditions: BMI <16 kg/m(2), a recent unintentional weight loss >15%, very little nutritional intake for >10 days, and/or low plasma concentrations of potassium, phosphate or magnesium before feeding; and those with at least two of the following conditions: BMI <18.5 kg/m(2), a recent weight loss >10%, very little nutritional intake

Situations of cardiac arrest have been reported in under-nourished patients with protein and calorie deficits when the provision of nutrients was initiated in an uncontrolled manner. The recognition of the association between the provision of food in these circumstances and the serious clinical consequences, generally heartbeat disorders, has led this condition to be described as "re-feeding syndrome". The case presented here is of severe acute respiratory failure and cardiogenic shock in a 44-year-old female patient with severe protein and calorie malnutrition associated with the start of hyp

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Neonates with enterostomies commonly suffer from a functional short bowel syndrome (SBS) and have a greater risk of electrolyte and fluid loss with poor weight gain. The authors describe their experience with refeeding stoma effluent into the mucous fistula in neonates.
METHODS: A 5-year (1993 to 1997) chart review of neonates with stoma effluent refeeding was undertaken. Demographics, medical history, surgical procedures, timing, and duration of refeedings were reviewed. Enteral and total parenteral nutritional (TPN) requirements, electrolyte, and acid-base disturbances w

BACKGROUND: Early enteral feeding (EF) may result in fever, elevated white blood cell count, increased serum levels of liver enzymes, and diarrhea. We name the complications "enteral refeeding syndrome", as a subtype of refeeding syndrome, because they are likely to result from long-term lack of lumen nutrition. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of enteral refeeding syndrome after long-term total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and the solution for the disease.
METHODS: We collected the clinical data of 100 patients with gastrointestinal fistula, who were cured from Api

Background/Objectives: Preterm neonates receiving parenteral nutrition (PN) are at risk of developing refeeding syndrome (RS). Risk factors and the related consequences remain largely undefined. In particular, the reason why only some preterm neonates out of a group receiving the same nutritional protocol will develop RS is yet to be fully understood. The aims of this study were to explore the clinical and nutritional factors contributing to RS and to assess the clinical consequences of this condition. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted, including all newborns with gestational age ≤

In 1981, Weinsier and Krumdieck described death resulting from overzealous total parenteral nutrition in two chronically malnourished, but stable, patients given aggressive total parenteral nutrition. This was the birth of what is now called the refeeding syndrome, a nutrition-related disorder associated with severe electrolyte disturbances. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that refeeding syndrome was first described medically in Florence by Antonio Benivieni in 1507 in his book On Some Hidden and Remarkable Causes of Diseases and Cures. What we now know as refeeding syndrome was des
