Pupillary light reflexes in premature infants prior to 30 weeks postmenstrual age.

Data regarding the pupillary responses in very premature neonates is scarce; what data exist, moreover, is not recent. The purpose of this pilot study is to collect data on direct and consensual pupillary light responses before 30 weeks postmenstrual age. Six neonates were studied. Mean pupillary size at rest was 3.6 +/- 0.4 mm. No direct or consensual responses to light were present in any of 12 eyes. Accurate information about pupillary reflexes in very premature neonates provides relevant information about the development of the visual and neurologic systems. Available information about the

[Hand-held pupillometer for evaluating pupillary light reflex in general practice and at the bedside].

Owing to the sophisticated equipment currently required for the investigation of pupillary behavior, pupillographic procedures are still the preserve of a few specialized laboratories. To allow pupillographic measurements under ophthalmological office conditions, we designed a portable pupillometer that can also be used for bedside examinations. Following a defined light stimulus, the prototype presented in this paper records a direct pupillary light reflex on the basis of infrared reflex photometry. The latency of the pupillary reflex and the pupillary constriction time are determined and sho

Hybrid BCI for Meal-Assist Robot Using Dry-Type EEG and Pupillary Light Reflex.

Brain-computer interface (BCI)-based assistive technologies enable intuitive and efficient user interaction, significantly enhancing the independence and quality of life of elderly and disabled individuals. Although existing wet EEG-based systems report high accuracy, they suffer from limited practicality. This study presents a hybrid BCI system combining dry-type EEG-based flash visual-evoked potentials (FVEP) and pupillary light reflex (PLR) designed to control an LED-based meal-assist robot. The hybrid system integrates dry-type EEG and eyewear-type infrared cameras, addressing the preparat

Melanopsin-mediated pupillary light reflex and sleep quality in patients with normal tension glaucoma.

PURPOSE: The intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) and sleep quality are impaired in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). In this study, we investigated whether ipRGCs and sleep quality were also impaired in patients with normal tension glaucoma (NTG). METHODS: We performed pupillometry and sleep quality assessment in 15 patients with NTG and 17 healthy age-matched controls. Pupillometry protocol consisted of monocular stimulation with high illuminance (100 lux) red (633 nm, 300 cd/m2 or 15.23 log quanta/cm2 /s) and blue light (463 nm, 332 cd/m2 or 15.27 lo

Atypical pupillary light reflex and heart rate variability in children with autism spectrum disorder.

We investigated pupillary light reflex (PLR) in 152 children with ASD, 116 typically developing (TD) children, and 36 children with non-ASD neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Heart rate variability (HRV) was measured simultaneously to study potential impairments in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) associated with ASD. The results showed that the ASD group had significantly longer PLR latency, reduced relative constriction amplitude, and shorter constriction/redilation time than those of the TD group. Similar atypical PLR parameters were observed in the NDD group. A significant age effect o

Chromatic Pupillary Light Reflex in Two Dogs With Amaurosis Secondary to Optic Pathway Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Chromatic (colorimetric) pupillary light reflexes (cPLR) are reportedly useful in canine neuro-ophthalmology to differentiate sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS) from optic pathway disease (neurological disorders) causing acute blindness. We report two canine cases with cPLR test results reported to be consistent with primary retinal disease that were subsequently diagnosed with optic pathway (CNS) disease. ANIMALS STUDIED: A 7-year-old Dachshund and a 7-year-old Weimaraner were presented for acute blindness. PROCEDURES AND RESULTS: Both dogs failed obstacle test

Atypical pupillary light reflex in 2-6-year-old children with autism spectrum disorders.

The purpose of this study was to investigate pupillary light reflex (PLR) in 2-6-years-old children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A total of 117 medication-free 2-6-year-old boys participated in this study. Sixty participants were diagnosed with ASD (the "ASD group") and the other 57 were in the control group of typical development (the "TD group"). A questionnaire was completed by the parent/guardian for assessing potential dysfunctions in the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The base pupil radius, PLR latency, and constriction time showed a significant age-related trend in both the AS

Association between pupillary light reflex and sensory behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Atypical pupillary light reflexes (PLR) has been observed in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), which suggests potential autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction in ASD. ANS is also involved in modulating sensory processing and sensory dysfunction has been widely reported in children with ASD. However, the potential association between physiological measurements of PLR and behavioral observations (e.g. sensory behaviors) has not been examined extensively in literature. In this study, we investigated the potential correlation between PLR and frequently observed sensory behaviors i

Pupillary light reflex deficits in a canine model of late infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

Late-infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (CLN2) is a hereditary neurological disorder characterized by progressive retinal degeneration and vision loss, cognitive and motor decline, seizures, and pronounced brain atrophy. The progressive loss of neurological functions eventually leads to death, usually by the early teenage years. Utilizing a canine model of CLN2, therapeutic studies to inhibit the brain and retinal degenerations are currently under way. Using this dog model, studies were undertaken to compare quantitative assessments of the pupillary light reflex (PLR) and electroretinogr

Neurological Pupil Index and Pupillary Light Reflex by Pupillometry Predict Outcome Early After Cardiac Arrest.

BACKGROUND: The absence of the pupillary light reflex (PLR) 3 days after cardiac arrest predicts poor outcome, but quantitative PLR assessment with pupillometry early after recovery of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and throughout targeted temperature management (TTM) has rarely been evaluated. METHODS: Fifty-five adult patients treated with TTM with available pupillometry data from the NeurOptics NPi-200 were studied. Discharge outcome was classified good if the cerebral performance category score was 1-2, poor if 3-5. Pupil size, PLR percent constriction (%PLR), and constriction velocity (C

Pupillary reflex and behavioral masking responses to light as functional measures of retinal degeneration in mice.

BACKGROUND: Pre-clinical testing of retinal pathology and treatment efficacy depends on reliable and valid measures of retinal function. The electroretinogram (ERG) and tests of visual acuity are the ideal standard, but can be unmeasurable while useful vision remains. Non-image-forming responses to light such as the pupillary light reflex (PLR) are attractive surrogates. However, it is not clear how accurately such responses reflect changes in visual capability in specific disease models. The purpose of this study was to test whether measures of non-visual responses to light correlate with pre

Acepromazine and Chlorpromazine as Pharmaceutical-grade Alternatives to Chlorprothixene for Pupillary Light Reflex Imaging in Mice.

Studies of visual responses in isoflurane-anesthetized mice often use the sedative chlorprothixene to decrease the amount of isoflurane used because excessive isoflurane could adversely affect light-evoked responses. However, data are not available to justify the use of this nonpharmaceutical-grade chemical. The current study tested whether pharmaceutical-grade sedatives would be appropriate alternatives for imaging pupillary light reflexes. Male 15-wk-old mice were injected intraperitoneally with 1 mg/kg chlorprothixene, 5 mg/kg acepromazine, 10 mg/kg chlorpromazine, or saline. After anesthet

Pivotal roles of melanopsin containing retinal ganglion cells in pupillary light reflex in photopic conditions.

The pupillary light reflex (PLR) is crucial for protecting the retina from excess light. The intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) in the retina are neurons that are critical to generating the PLR, receiving rod/cone photoreceptor signals and directly sensing light through melanopsin. Previous studies have investigated the roles of photoreceptors and ipRGCs in PLR using genetically-modified mouse models. Herein, we acutely ablated photoreceptors using N-nitroso-N-methylurea (MNU) to examine the roles of ipRGCs in the PLR. We conducted PLR and multiple electrode array (ME

Utility of Pupillary Light Reflex Metrics as a Physiologic Biomarker for Adolescent Sport-Related Concussion.

IMPORTANCE: Concussion diagnosis remains clinical, without objective diagnostic tests available for adolescents. Known deficits in visual accommodation and autonomic function after concussion make the pupillary light reflex (PLR) a promising target as an objective physiological biomarker for concussion. OBJECTIVE: To determine the potential utility of PLR metrics as physiological biomarkers for concussion. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Prospective cohort of adolescent athletes between ages 12 and 18 years recruited between August 1, 2017, and December 31, 2018. The study took place at a

Pupillary Light Reflexes are Associated with Autonomic Dysfunction in Bolivian Diabetics But Not Chagas Disease Patients.

Autonomic dysfunction is common in Chagas disease and diabetes. Patients with either condition complicated by cardiac autonomic dysfunction face increased mortality, but no clinical predictors of autonomic dysfunction exist. Pupillary light reflexes (PLRs) may identify such patients early, allowing for intensified treatment. To evaluate the significance of PLRs, adults were recruited from the outpatient endocrine, cardiology, and surgical clinics at a Bolivian teaching hospital. After testing for Chagas disease and diabetes, participants completed conventional autonomic testing (CAT) evaluatin

Direct retino-iridal projections and intrinsic iris contraction mediate the pupillary light reflex in early vertebrates.

The pupillary light reflex (PLR) adapts the amount of light reaching the retina, protecting it and improving image formation. Two PLR mechanisms have been described in vertebrates. First, the pretectum receives retinal inputs and projects to the Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EWN), which targets the ciliary ganglion through the oculomotor nerve (nIII). Postganglionic fibers enter the eye-globe, traveling to the iris sphincter muscle. Additionally, some vertebrates exhibit an iris-intrinsic PLR mechanism mediated by sphincter muscle cells that express melanopsin inducing muscle contraction. Given th

Cross-sectional and prospective analysis of the association of the pupillary light reflex with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts.

Predictive models of near-term suicidal behavior are not powerful and have low positive predictive value. A prior small pilot study showed a relationship between suicidal ideation (SI) or suicide attempts (SA) with rapid averaged maximum constriction velocities (aMCV) obtained during assays of the pupillary light reflex. The present report aims to replicate these findings in a larger cross-sectional study of patients with anxious and depressive symptoms and then examine the optimal value of MCV in prospective identification of near-term events which represent high risk for SA. The cross-sectio
